Ocular filariasis was observed in an African student living in Missouri. The adult female Loa loa worm was seen migrating under the conjunctiva. There was 34% eosinophilia and a high microfilaremia. The patient was successfully treated with diethylcarbamazine (Hetrazan) with no appearance of allergic manifestations.

A detailed analysis of all the reported dog bites that occurred over a 2-year period in St. Louis, Mo., provided new insight not only into the severity of the problem, but also the environmental context for injury. Dog bite is a major medical problem that affects at least 1 of every 222 people and specifically 1 of every 83 children, 5 to 9 years old. Between 1992 and 1999, 93 cases of blastomycosis, including 25 laboratory confirmed cases, were identified in Missouri (annual incidence, 0.2/100,000 population). Mississippi County in southeastern Missouri had the highest incidence (12/100,000) with a much higher rate among blacks than whites in this county (43.21/100,000). The mortality rate, 44% was also higher among blacks. To determine risk factors for endemic blastomycosis, a case-control study was conducted among southeastern Missouri residents. An infection with Histoplasma capsulatum was diagnosed in a farmed reindeer in Missouri, an endemic area for histoplasmosis, localized in the intestine. The intrahistiocytic organisms were identified in tissue sections using histologic methods and confirmed by immunohistochemistry. This is the first report of histoplasmosis in a reindeer or in any deer species.

Missourians are dying of fentanyl poisoning at an unprecedented rate. We identified growth areas in Missouri for fatal fentanyl encounters in rural and western counties. Though the deaths occur for a multitude of reasons, a growing trend adds to the surge in fentanyl fatalities: poisonings from counterfeit pills. A case-control study of lung cancer was conducted to evaluate the relationship between lung cancer histologic types and occupation, adjusted for smoking. A total of 4,431 white male cases and 11,326 cancer controls, diagnosed between 1980 and 1985, were identified through the Missouri Cancer Registry. Deep sequencing of wastewater to detect SARS-CoV-2 has been used during the COVID-19 pandemic to monitor viral variants as they appear and circulate in communities. SARS-CoV-2 lineages of an unknown source that have not been detected in clinical samples, referred to as cryptic lineages, are sometimes repeatedly detected from specific locations. We have continued to detect one such lineage previously seen in a Missouri site. This cryptic lineage has continued to evolve, indicating continued selective pressure similar to that observed in Omicron lineages.
