Mitral valve prolapse is a relatively common condition in the general population. The syndrome appears more common in females, and is often associated with a family history. Patients may be asymptomatic or may present with a variety of symptoms ranging from mild chest aches and anxiety to severe angina-like chest pain, palpitations and dizziness. The common auscultatory features include mid-systolic clicks and a late systolic murmur, either alone or in combination. The wide spectrum of symptoms and signs may be explained by ventriculovalvular disproportion, where either the ventricle is too sm…

For half a century the systolic click and late systolic murmur lay dormant as innocent auscultatory curiosities. The thirteen years since Barlow related these phenomena to mitral leaflet prolapse have witnessed an astonishing information explosion. We have sought to bring together the accumulated data in this review. An Historical Perspective traces the evolution from the now abandoned "pericardial" or "extracardiac" phases, through the leafletchordal phase (redundancy), the myocardial phase (segmental left ventricular contraction abnormalities), to the anular phase (dilatation and faulty syst

To determine the mitral valve abnormalities associated with hemodynamically important mitral regurgitation (MR) among patients with mitral valve prolapse (MVP), computerized 2-dimensional echocardiographic measurements of mitral leaflet and anular dimensions and motion in 26 patients with MVP and MR were compared to those in 48 subjects with uncomplicated MVP, 16 patients with MR due to etiologies other than MVP (rheumatic in 8) and 35 normal adults. Compared to both uncomplicated MVP and normal subjects, patients with MVP plus MR were older (p less than 0.05), had strikingly large mitral leaf…

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a defect in the mitral valve where a redundancy of valve tissue is associated with a variety of clinical expressions, ranging from an isolated mild bulging of the mitral valve to a severe prolapse of the mitral valve with extensive mitral regurgitation. As the natural history and complications of MVP are not always benign, it seems essential to strive for the proper management of these patients. The identification of functionally related genes could provide helpful clues and increase the present understanding of the pathogenesis of MVP, with the ultimate goal of …
