Improved treatment and prevention strategies, such as antimicrobial mouthwashes, may be important for addressing the public health threat of antimicrobial-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Here, we describe the activity of seven common antibacterial mouthwashes and antiseptics against N. gonorrhoeae isolates, incorporating the use of a human saliva test matrix. Our data demonstrate that antibacterial mouthwashes and antiseptics vary in their ability to inhibit the in vitro growth of N. gonorrhoeae and saliva may impact this inhibitory activity.

Chlorhexidine is a widely used antiseptic and disinfectant in medical and nonmedical environments. Compared to its ubiquitous use, allergic contact dermatitis from chlorhexidine has rarely been reported and so its sensitization rate seems to be low. The prevalence of contact urticaria and anaphylaxis due to chlorhexidine remains to be unknown. This case report presents a case of urticaria due to oral use of chlorhexidine. The adverse reaction was confirmed by skin prick test.

Inter-related determinants of oral malodor were measured over a three-hour period in 30 human subjects after mouthwash treatments. Re-odoration was important to mouthwash activity for 30 min. Seven patients with long-standing atrophic/erosive oral lichen planus were treated for 4 weeks with cyclosporin A as a mouthwash. At the end of the 3-month follow-up period, no improvement in disease status was noted in any of the patients, although two patients showed a slight improvement of their lesions at the end of 1 month of treatment. Cyclosporin A as a mouthwash does not seem to be an effective means of treating severe oral lichen planus.
