[Frontal mucocele: open surgery].

This work presents 13 cases of frontal mucoceles, 9 with endo-orbital extension. All were treated with 'open surgery': 11 using a fronto-orbital approach, 2 with a bicoronal Cairns-Unterberger approach. Four patients had recurrent mucoceles 1-20 years after the previous surgery. In one case there was an association with frontal osteoma. In 10 cases, conservative treatment was applied through repermeabilization of the infundibular region through an external, endonasal pathway and positioning of a nasal sinus drainage tube (kept in place for 4 weeks). In the remaining 3 cases, the sinus cavity w…

[Mucocele of maxillary sinus].

The term mucocele designates a cyst developing from a sinus mucosa, generally the frontal and/or ethmoidal sinuses. Maxillary sinus localization is exceptional however and raises numerous diagnostic problems in daily practice. The antral mucoceles are potentially destructive lesions, often secondary to Caldwell-Luc procedure. In this article are described in some detail the clinical, radiological and histopathological features of true antral mucoceles.

Unilateral congenital nasolacrimal mucocele.

A case of a congenital nasolacrimal mucocele is reported. This very uncommon finding presents usually with a diagnostic triad on CT: an intranasal cystic mass, a dilated nasolacrimal duct and lacrimal sac.

The ethmoidal "polypoid mucocele".

Seven patients with polypoid mucoceles of the ethmoid sinuses were examined by computed tomography (CT). The findings in all cases were remarkably similar. This unique CT appearance has not been seen with malignancies and should be considered characteristic of this benign entity.

Mucocele: A Case Report.

Mucoceles are the most common minor salivary gland disorder and represent the second most frequent benign soft tissue tumors of the oral cavity, following irritative fibroma. Various treatment modalities have been suggested for mucocele among which different types of lasers being the most recent and advanced. In the present case reports, diode laser was used for the excision of mucocele on the lower lip, and the advantages of it over the conventional scalpel method were minimal discomfort, bleeding, recurrence, and better compliance among patients.

Mucocele: A diagnostic dilemma!!

Oral mucocele is the most common benign lesion of minor salivary gland caused due to any form of mechanical trauma to the excretory duct of the gland. It is of two types - mucous extravasation phenomenon and mucous retention type. Extravasation type is more common. Here, we report a case of a 65-year-old male patient with a complaint of painful swelling in the lower lip for 1 month with a history of trauma in the lower lip. It was clinically diagnosed as traumatic fibroma, and an excisional biopsy was done. However, the histopathology was basically that of mucous extravasation phenomenon coexi…

Compartmentalized maxillary sinus mucocele.

A rare case of compartmentalized maxillary sinus mucocele 12 years after a Caldwell-Luc operation is reported. The two separate mucoceles were drained intranasally by endoscopic sinus surgery. The clinical features of this mucocele are presented and the incidence, presentation and theories on formation of post-operative mucoceles are reviewed.

An 'empty' sphenoid mucocele.

Sphenoid sinus mucoceles behave as mass lesions producing erosion of adjacent bone and cranial nerve palsies. The probable cause is obstruction of the ostia of the sinus. We describe a case which was 'cured' inadvertently by a nasal polypectomy.

Sphenoethmoidal mucocele: radiographic diagnosis.

Fourteen cases of mucocele of the sphenoid sinus are reviewed to assess differentiating radiographic features. Recognition is usually possible using detailed tomography in the frontal, lateral, and submentovertex projections. Two constant findings were opacification of the sinus (usually bilateral) and expansion and thinning of the sinus walls. Contiguous opacification of the ethmoid sinuses was present in most cases, and pansinusitis was frequent. Distinction from intrasellar lesions is based on the absence of sellar enlargement. Early and correct diagnosis is important to prevent permanent v…
