Oesophageal involvement in benign mucous membrane pemphigoid.

Benign mucous membrane pemphigoid is a relatively rare disease characterised by the presence of bullous lesions and erosions of the mucous membranes leading to scarring. Oral and conjunctival mucosae are most frequently affected. Occasionally, the oesophagus is involved and two radiological patterns, webs and smooth strictures, are seen.

[Bullous autoimmune dermatoses of the mucous membranes].

Autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBD) comprise a group of organ-specific autoimmune diseases which are characterised by the production of autoantibodies against adhesion molecules and structural proteins of skin and mucosae. Depending on the target protein, AIBD are classified into intraepidermal (pemphigus group) and subepidermal (pemphigoid group, epidermolysis bullosa acquisita, dermatitis herpetiformis) blistering disorders. Depending on the clinical entity, patients can develop blisters, pustules, erosions, and erythema on the skin and mucosae.

Ashy dermatosis with involvement of mucous membranes.

Ashy dermatosis is a rare condition, of unknown aetiology, in which mucous membranes are typically spared. The authors report the case of a 57-year-old female with a history of asymptomatic gray-bluish macules located on the trunk and oral mucosa. There were no relief changes on examination. Skin biopsies from the oral mucosa and trunk were performed and both were compatible with ashy dermatosis. The patient started treatment with oral clofazimine but due to the absence of clinical improvement the drug was discontinued three months later. This case report illustrates an atypical case of ashy d…

[Inflammatory diseases of oral mucous membranes].

BACKGROUND: Mucous membranes are involved in many different inflammatory disorders. METHODS: We describe the clinical features, diagnostic workup, and therapy of inflammatory diseases of mucous membranes. RESULTS: The diagnostic workup is based on medical history, clinical manifestations, histopathology, and serology. Inadequate dental hygiene is one of the main pathogenetic factors. Treatment options depend on the diagnosis, underlying cause, and disease severity. Both local and systemic immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory strategies may be effective. CONCLUSIONS: The diagnostic and ther…

The management of mucous membrane pemphigoid and pemphigus.

Mucous membrane pemphigoid and pemphigus vulgaris are autoimmune blistering disorders in which many similar drugs and therapeutic strategies are utilized. In general, localized disease can be treated with topical agents. In contrast, patients with more severe and progressive disease usually require a combination of systemic corticosteroids and immunosuppressive medications. Oral corticosteroids, adjuvant immunosuppressive agents, antibiotics such as dapsone and immunomodulatory procedures like intravenous immunoglobulin are the main therapeutic agents used in treating these two disorders. Much…

[Involvement of mucous membranes in papulosquamous diseases].

Many skin diseases may affect the oral and genital mucous membranes but involvement is generally uncommon. Mucous membranes are most often affected by lichen planus and less frequently by psoriasis or lupus erythematosus. Macroscopic changes may vary from increased vulnerability, erythema and erosions to leukoplakia. Subjective symptoms of burning sensations or localized pain must be distinguished from underlying psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, neoplasia may complicate chronic lichen planus. Therefore, depending on the location and extent of mucous membrane symptoms, both local and systemi…

[Differential diagnoses of ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid].

Overall, conjunctival scarring is rare and often overlooked during routine examination. However, the differential diagnostic distinction of cicatricial mucous membrane pemphigoid from other causes is crucial for further treatment planning. Other entities that lead to conjunctival scarring, are ocular rosacea, ocular graft-versus-host disease, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, infections, trauma and further sometimes very rare diseases. Most of these differential diagnoses have in common that conjunctival scarring does not progress indefinitely if untreated, in contrast to mucous membrane pemphigoid…
