Mycobacterium salmoniphilum and M. chelonae in Captive Populations of Chinook Salmon.

Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha is a keystone fish species in the Pacific Northwest. In 2019, unusual mortalities occurred in two different populations of cultured fingerlings from the same facility in California, USA. The systems consist of outdoor, enclosed, flow-through freshwater tanks that are maintained at 18 ± 1°C. Clinical signs and gross findings were only observed in one population and included abnormal swimming, inappetence, lethargy, skin discoloration, and the presence of multifocal nodular and ulcerative skin lesions. Microscopic lesions were infrequent and consisted of s

Outbreak of Mycobacterium chelonae infection associated with use of jet injectors.

Between January 1 and May 15, 1988, foot infections due to Mycobacterium chelonae subspecies abscessus were diagnosed in eight persons who had undergone invasive procedures at a podiatry office. A cohort study was performed to evaluate risk factors for disease. Persons who underwent procedures before 10:30 AM were more likely to have developed infection than those with procedures after that time (relative risk, 5.6). In addition, procedures involving any of the second through fourth toes were more likely to have resulted in infection than procedures involving only the first and/or fifth toes (…

Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Lung Disease Caused by Mycobacterium chelonae: A Case Report.

Mycobacterium chelonae lung disease is very rare. We report a case of lung disease caused by M. chelonae in a previously healthy woman. A 69-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of hemoptysis. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest revealed bronchiolitis associated with bronchiectasis in the lingular division of the left upper lobe. Nontuberculous mycobacteria were isolated three times from sputum specimens. All isolates were identified as M. chelonae by various molecular methods that characterized rpoB and hsp65 gene sequences. Although some new lesions including bronchio…

Otomastoiditis with acute left facial nerve paralysis caused by Mycobacterium chelonae.

Mycobacterium chelonae usually causes soft-tissue and skin infection. It is a rare cause of otomastoiditis. The clinical presentation and operative findings are similar to those of other nontuberculous mycobacterial infections. We describe a case of left-sided otomastoiditis with acute facial nerve paralysis caused by this organism in a previously well middle-aged woman. Her facial palsy totally resolved after tympanomastoidectomy plus a 7-week regimen of clarithromycin and moxifloxacin. To our knowledge, a case of otomastoiditis with acute facial nerve paralysis caused by M chelonae has not b…

Mycobacterium chelonae causing otitis media in an ear-nose-and-throat practice.

Seventeen cases of otitis media caused by Mycobacterium chelonae were detected among patients seen at a single ear-nose-and-throat (ENT) office (Office A) in Louisiana between May 5 and September 15, 1987. All the patients had a tympanotomy tube or tubes in place or had one or more tympanic-membrane perforations, with chronic otorrhea that was unresponsive to standard therapy with antimicrobial agents. Middle-ear exploration in six patients revealed abundant granulation tissue; multiple granulomas and acid-fast bacilli were demonstrated on a section of tissue from one patient with a nonhealing…

Mycobacterium chelonae Keratitis following Keratorefractive Lenticule Extraction: Highlighting Diagnostic and Treatment Complexities.

INTRODUCTION: This is a rare case of Mycobacterium chelonae keratitis following keratorefractive lenticule extraction (KLEX). CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old female presented to the emergency eye clinic with 4 days of eye pain and decreased vision following KLEX surgery. She was using topical tobramycin drops four times per day, which was changed to ciprofloxacin drops. Following initial improvement, the eye deteriorated with further stromal infiltrates. A corneal culture identified M. chelonae. The keratitis required extensive topical and systemic medications, repeat scrapes, and an amnioti…

Disease attributed to Mycobacterium chelonae in South African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis).

The fast-growing nontuberculous mycobacterial species Mycobacterium chelonae was isolated from six captive South African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis) with chronic weight loss and nonhealing ulcerative skin lesions. Three of the M. chelonae isolates were evaluated to confirm the species identification using polymerase chain reaction restriction analysis. Disease associated with M. chelonae is reported mainly in people and in fish. To our knowledge, this is the first report of disease associated with M. chelonae in a colony of captive Xenopus sp.

Case Series and Review of the Literature of Mycobacterium chelonae Infections of the Lower Extremities.

Mycobacterium chelonae infections involving the lower extremities are rare clinical entities that present a diagnostic challenge given its diverse clinical presentations ranging from superficial (e.g., cellulitis, painful vesicular lesions) to deep (e.g., tenosynovitis) infections. We present 1 cases of M chelonae infections of the feet diagnosed 6 to 12 months after initial symptoms representing the difficulty of diagnosing this condition. Both cases were successfully managed with aggressive surgical debridement and long durations of antibiotic therapy with long-term care. A comprehensive rev…

Mycobacterium chelonae bloodstream infection induced by osteomyelitis of toe: A case report.

Mycobacterium chelonae is a rapidly growing mycobacterium that has the potential to cause refractory infections in humans. Mycobacteremia resulting from the organism is extremely rare, and its clinical features are yet to be uncovered. We herein present a case of M. chelonae bloodstream infection involving an immunocompromised older patient. A 79-year-old woman, on a long-term treatment with prednisolone plus tacrolimus for rheumatoid arthritis, visited our outpatient department complaining of deteriorating pain and swelling at her right 1st toe. Laboratory parameters showed elevated C-reactiv…

Immunostimulatory effects of polar glycopeptidolipids of Mycobacterium chelonae for inactivated rabies vaccine.

Humoral and cellular immune responses were analyzed with Fuenzalida-Palacios rabies vaccine associated with pGPL-Mc, polar glycopeptidolipids extracted from Mycobacterium chelonae, aiming at its use as adjuvant. These results were compared to those obtained with BCG, a well-known immunostimulator, under the same conditions. Rabies vaccine plus pGPL-Mc (2.5 mg/kg) induced a significant increase in serum neutralizing activity, in vitro lymphocyte proliferation (spontaneous, specific and mitogen stimulation) and delayed type hypersensibility. In addition, pGPL-Mc, as well as BCG, enhanced the vac…
