PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma prognosis is related to its potential locoregional invasion and metastatic spread. Among prognostic factors, initial tumor-node-metastasis stage is the main one, besides other biological parameters. Worldwide development of positron emission tomography imaging is changing modalities of staging. Concomitant chemoradiotherapy represents one of the most recent advances in the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients, besides intensity-modulated radiation therapy. This review updates these recent advances in diagnosis and treatment of nasopharyngea

OBJECTIVE: To study the operations of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.
METHOD: Twenty-two patients with nasopharyngeal angiofibroma operated by various operative approaches were studied in this research. All their clinic data were collected and analyzed.
RESULT: In the operation, the brooding amount was from 400 ml to 1600 ml. One case was recurred in half a year after operation. The other 21 cases didn't recur after one to two years follow-up.
CONCLUSION: In order to improve the treatment, reduce the recurrence of tumor and decrease brooding in operation, better preparation before surgery, rea

In summary, an ideal diagnostic plan for cats with suspected FNPs should include a thorough anesthetized oropharyngeal examination, otoscopic examination, and imaging studies, which may consist of a bulla radiographic series or specialized imaging studies such as CT or MR scans. In general, if signs indicative of otitis media are present, ventral bulla osteotomy should be advised. As a result of the distinct appearance of FNPs, a preoperative biopsy is not indicated in all instances but should be considered if there are atypical features to the history or presentation. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare malignancy in most parts of the world, with an incidence well under 1 per 100,000 person-years. Exceptions are the Chinese, especially the Cantonese living in the central region of Guangdong Province in Southern China. Other populations with elevated rates include the natives of Southeast Asia, the natives of the Artic region, and the Arabs of North Africa and parts of the Middle East. Intake of preserved foods at an early age has been linked to NPC risk in all population groups with increased NPC rates. Other recognized risk factors for NPC are cigaret

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a disease with a remarkable racial and geographical distribution. In most parts of the world it is a rare condition and in only a handful of places does this low risk profile alter. These include the Southern Chinese, Eskimos and other Arctic natives, inhabitants of South-East Asia and also the populations of North Africa and Kuwait.

CT and MR revealed a case of nasopharyngeal atresia, a malformation in which the soft palate is not formed, and the hard palate extends posteriorly to fuse with the anterior surface of the clivus, resulting in complete isolation of the nasal and oral cavities and the absence of a nasopharynx. We believe this rare anomaly results from abnormal persistence of the embryologic bucconasal plate and/or anomalous migration of the nasoseptal elements.

A total of 27 cases of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma were treated in this series. All were males and age ranged between 9 and 24 years. Predominant symptoms were epistaxis and nasal obstruction. Nasopharyngeal mass was present in all cases. Cheek extensions were observed in 6. Surgery was done in 25 cases. Transpalatal excision was done in all cases. Cheek extensions were removed through separate sublabial incisions. Additional lateral rhinotomy was required in one case. Death occurred in one case during surgery due to excessive haemorrhage. Out of 25 cases, 21 were followed up for periods rangi

From 1964 to 1983, 54304 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) had been diagnosed in our hospital, of which 53 (0.10%) were under 14 years old. Among the 53 cases, 4 (7.55%) had Stage II, 36 (67.92%) Stage III, 12 (22.64%) Stage IV and 1 (1.89%) unstaged lesions, 26.42% had presenting symptoms related to nasopharyngeal lesion and 73.58% to cervical mass. Involvement of the cranial nerves was relatively rare. There was a significant difference between the adult and children patients on the ratio of carcinoma to sarcoma (4.08:1 for children, 443:1 for adult). Among the poorly differentiated ca

A retrospective study of 24 children suffering from nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) during the years 1974-1983 is reported. The diagnosis was delayed because of the primary tumor site and difficulty in examination. Cervical lymph node enlargement (83.3%) was the commonest presenting symptom. The diagnosis was usually confirmed by cervical lymph node biopsy. Boys were affected 1.6 times more frequently than girls. In all, 91% of our cases had an anaplastic carcinoma, and 70% were in stage T3 or T4. Supplementation of radiotherapy by intensive chemotherapy even for stages T1 and T2 improves the surv

Hypoxia caused by pneumonia or bronchiolitis is a common cause of death in children in developing countries. Oxygen is very expensive in developing countries, and it is important that the limited supplies available be used as efficiently as possible. This study evaluated the administration of oxygen through an 8 FG catheter inserted into the nose to a depth equal to the distance from the side of the nose to the front of the ear, so that the tip of the catheter was just visible in the pharynx below the soft palate. A flow rate of 150 ml/kg/min gave an inspired oxygen concentration of about 50%

The occurrence of inflammatory nasopharyngeal polyps is described in a series of four cats. Two of the cats presented with classical features of chronic upper respiratory tract infection, in a third gradual onset of coughing and retching were the only clinical signs, while in the fourth only noisy respiration accompanied the growth. In each cat the polyp was attached to the pharyngeal opening of the eustachian tube and it is suggested that such masses arise from either the lining of the tube itself or that they may even find origin within the tympanic bulla. However, anamnesis and the subseque

Nasopharyngeal cancers are a rarity in France. Radiotherapy is the cornerstone of treatment, frequently combined with chemotherapy. The technical modality of radiotherapy is complex in this disease, which is located in the vicinity of numerous organs at risk. In this article, we will present the updated guidelines of the French society for radiation oncology (Société française de radiothérapie oncologique, SFRO) on the indications, and technical details of radiotherapy in nasopharyngeal cancers.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare benign tumor arising predominantly in the nasopharynx of adolescent males. It is an aggressive neoplasm and shows a propensity for destructive local spread often extending to the base of the skull and into the cranium. Clinically, however, it is obscure with painless, progressive unilateral nasal obstruction being the common presenting symptom with or without epistaxis and rhinorrhea. Diagnosis of JNA is made by complete history, clinical examination, radiography, nasal endoscopy and by using specialized imaging techniques such as arteriogra

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is an umbrella term for a group of malignant epithelial tumors with different etiopathogenesis and a broad range of histopathological appearances. Some types have a dramatically skewed geographical and ethnic distribution and shows virtually 100% association with Epstein Barr virus. The field of other/contributing etiological factors are only partially known and recently a subset of this carcinoma has been linked to transcriptionally active Human Papilloma virus. As with all malignant tumors, the clinical stage of disease is of paramount importance. Despite loco-region

A 59-year-old female was complaining of sore throat, right otorrhea, and hearing impairment. There were no abnormal findings suggestive of pulmonary tuberculosis on her chest XP and CT. Nasopharyngoscopic examination detected a lesion coated with white mass on her nasopharynx, and a biopsy-specimen from this lesion revealed histopathological findings compatible with tuberculosis and the presence of acid-fast bacilli. PCR was positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. Therefore, we diagnosed the case as primary nasopharyngeal tuberculosis and treated her by 4-drug combination regimen with

This article gives an overview about the main nasopharyngeal pathologies and incidental findings, which a radiologist could be confronted with in daily practice. These include nasopharyngeal cysts, lymphoid hyperplasia, juvenile angiofibroma, carcinomas and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Typical radiological findings, possibilities for making a specific diagnosis, differential diagnosis and description of the spread of a neoplasm are the central points. Investigation techniques and clinical signs are briefly summarized.
