Twenty-two men with patterns III-Va androgenetic alopecia were entered into a 10-month study aimed at establishing information on the natural progression of hair loss over a period of time typical of studies of hair growth promoters. The methodology employed was the same as that in published clinical trials of topical minoxidil, but the men refrained from application of either active drug or vehicle to their scalps. As one of the potential explanations for the observed 'placebo-effect' seen in non-vellus hair counts in the topical minoxidil trials was a learning curve of novice hair counters,

Since 1963 a continuous registration of patients with epileptic seizures has been carried out in Greater Aarhus, Denmark. This registration has been attempted by means of medical records dating back to 1940. On the basis of the established prevalence and the calculated cumulated incidence, we have tried to describe the natural history of the different types of epilepsy. The prevalence of all types of epileptic seizures (including febrile convulsions) has been found to be 2,441/100,000, whereas for patients with the diagnosis of epilepsy the rate is 1,274/100,000. The study describes the natura…

The natural history of 45 cases of smouldering leukaemia has been studied. Males and females were equally represented, with a median age of 60.5. The median survival of the whole group was only 20 months, but rare cases lived 10 years or longer. 38% developed acute leukaemia; the remainder usually died of the results of marrow failure. Although it was possible to divide these marrow dysplasias morphologically into 3 major subgroups (refractory anaemia with excess of myeloblasts, chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia and chronic erythraemic myelosis), several displayed transitional features. Many sh…

One hundred and sixty-three asymptomatic people with thyroid antibodies or raised serum thyrotrophin (TSH) concentrations, or both, and 209 age-matched and sex-matched controls without either marker of thyroid disorder were followed up for four years to determine the natural history of autoimmune thyroiditis. Mildly raised TSH concentrations alone and the presence of thyroid antibodies alone did not significantly increase the risk of developing overt hypothyroidism during the four years compared with the controls. Overt hypothyroidism developed at the rate of 5% a year in women who initially h…

BACKGROUND: Most gastric leiomyomas are asymptomatic and benign subepithelial tumors (SETs); however, some may increase in size or become symptomatic. Understanding their natural history is therefore important to their management. We investigated the natural history of histologically proven gastric leiomyomas.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed histologically proven gastric leiomyoma cases at a tertiary center. The baseline characteristics of these cases were analyzed, and those with a follow-up period of at least 12 months without immediate resection were evaluated. The primary outcome was…

BACKGROUND: Myhre syndrome (MS) is a rare genetic disease characterized by skeletal disorders, facial features and joint limitation, caused by a gain of function mutation in SMAD4 gene. The natural history of MS remains incompletely understood.
METHODS: We recruited in a longitudinal retrospective study patients with molecular confirmed MS from the French reference center for rare skeletal dysplasia. We described natural history by chaining data from medical reports, clinical data warehouse, medical imaging and photographies.
RESULTS: We included 12 patients. The median age was 22 years old …

Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (AC) is a heart muscle disease characterized by a scarred ventricular myocardium with a distinctive propensity … atients with AC, some of which showing overlapping phenotypes with other non-ischemic diseases. The natural history of AC is characterized by VAs and progressive deterioration of cardiac performance. Different phases of the disease are recognized, each characterized by pathological and clinical features. Arrhythmic manifestations are age-related: Ventricular fibr …

The metopic suture (MS) is one of the main sutures of the calvaria; premature closure is responsible for trigonocephaly, while persistence (metopism) is considered a normal variant. The ages of onset and completion of MS closure and prevalence of metopism in normal children are poorly documented. We studied the pattern of MS closure on 3D-CT scans of 477 children admitted for head trauma since 2012. We also studied the prevalence of trigonocephaly and the sex ratio in our clinical series of patients with all types of synostosis diagnosed during the last 4 decades. In the majority of children,

Papillomaviruses (Family: Papillomaviridae) are small non-enveloped viruses that cause skin and mucosa infections in diverse vertebrates. The vast majority have been detected in mammals. However, the number of papillomaviruses described in birds is growing, especially because of metagenomic studies. Seven complete genomes and one partial sequence have been described, corresponding to five papillomavirus genera. These have been detected from various sample types, including skin, internal epithelium, and faecal material, from seven highly diverse wild and captive avian species. This review summa

OBJECTIVES: Byler disease, originally described in Amish kindred, results from mutations in ATPase Class I Type 8b Member 1 (ATP8b1). Specific clinical reports of Amish Byler disease were last published 40 years ago. These investigations were directed at the present detailed clinical understanding of the early course of hepatic manifestations of Byler disease.
METHODS: This study analyzed routine clinical practice and outcomes of children with Byler disease (defined by homozygous c.923G>T mutation in ATP8b1), who initially presented to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC between January

Prostatic cancer can be a silent tumor, with no symptoms remaining undetectable throughout life . But when it keeps growing, enough to produce symptoms such as bladder neck obstruction, invasion of adjacent organs or distant metastasis, curative treatment is usually impossible. Since PSA emerges, data shows a dramatic increasing in the diagnosis of prostatic cancer, specially low risk tumor. Since then, We are wondering which tumors are suitable to be treated and which ones remain asymptomatic without treatment. Analysing the natural history of prostate cancer, helps us to choose the best atit…

There has long been evidence that hepatitis C can lead to persistent infection in a high proportion of infected individuals, and can progres … age liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver related death in the Western world. The natural history of the chronic disease remains incompletely defined. It is generally a slowly progressive disease characterized by persistent hepatic inflammation, leading to the development of cirrhosis in approximately 10-20% of patients over 20-30 years of HCV i …

The natural history of Barrett's esophagus (BE) is difficult to quantify because, by definition, it should describe the course of the condition if left untreated. Pragmatically, we assume that patients with BE will receive symptomatic treatment with acid suppression, usually a proton pump inhibitor, to treat their heartburn. This paper describes the development of complications of stricture, ulcer, dysplasia and adenocarcinoma from this standpoint. Controversies over the definition of BE and its implications in clinical practice are presented. The presence of intestinal metaplasia and its rele…

European spine journal : official publication of the European Spine Society, the European Spinal Deformity Society, and the European Section of the Cervical Spine Research Society2012eng
The natural history of Pott's kyphosis is different from that of other spinal deformities. After healing of the spinal infection, the post-tubercular kyphosis in adults is static but in children variable progression of the kyphosis is seen. The changes occurring in the spine of children, after the healing of the tubercular lesion, are more significant than the changes that occur during the active stage of infection. During growth, there is a decrease in deformity in 44 % of the children, an increase in deformity in 39 % of the children and no change in deformity in 17 % of the children. The cr…
