Right-sided congestive heart failure (brisket disease) commonly occurs in cattle raised at elevations >2,500-3,500 m. We investigated clinical cases resembling brisket disease at a western Nebraska feedyard at a moderate altitude (1,369 m). Over a 15-mo period (2009-2010), we examined 17 cases (16 steers and 1 heifer), all purebred Angus. The Nebraska Salt Marshes are unique inland saltwater ecosystems, and this exploratory study is aimed at understanding the microbial composition and diversity that is providing the underlying support for these ecosystems. The microbiome shows both temporal and spatial variations that are concurrent with seasonal variations in salinity, temperature, and vegetation growth. Between November 2000 and November 2005, approximately 200 mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from western Nebraska were extensively examined for the presence of Elaeophora schneideri, Wehr and Dikmans, 1935; three adult E. schneideri were detected from three mule deer. This represents the first documented occurrence of E. schneideri from wild deer in Nebraska.

Although mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is considered a distinctive disease entity within non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), the cytology and growth pattern of MCL can be quite variable and the clinical significance of these features is unclear. BACKGROUND: Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) is a globally emerging pathotype known for causing severe and disseminated infections across multiple organ systems. Diabetes is a risk factor for hvKp infection; however, otherwise healthy individuals from the community are also at risk.
CASE SUMMARY: Two patients from Nebraska presented with complex abscesses of unknown origin. Both cases required interventional procedures and prolonged hospitalization. PCR-based testing, animal studies, and whole-genome sequencing analysis confirmed that hvKp was the offending pathotype.

Nestling birds are rarely sampled in the field for most arboviruses, yet they may be important in arbovirus amplification cycles. We sampled both nestling and adult house sparrows (Passer domesticus) in western Nebraska for West Nile virus (WNV) or WNV-specific antibodies throughout the summer of 2008 and describe pathology in naturally infected nestlings.
