Eighteen months after the resection and micro-vascular reconstruction of central ossifying fibroma of the right mandible in a 54-year-old male patient, there occur two synchronous neoplasms, basal cell adenoma (BSA) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Two years after reconstructive surgery, the patient reported a second primary OSCC on the left retromolar mucosa. This case reports two morphologically diverse benign neoplasms preceding metachronous OSCC in one individual. While field cancerization makes the entire mucosa susceptible to the development of multiple primary malignant neoplasm…

Basal cell adenoma of salivary gland has become an established variant of monomorphic adenoma since its segregation from pleomorphic adenoma in 1967. Although there have been many comprehensive reports about benign basal cell adenomas, only rare case reports of malignant basal cell type neoplasms have appeared in the literature. Described in this report are the clinicopathologic features of 29 cases labeled basal cell adenocarcinomas that had morphologic characteristics of basal cell adenomas but infiltrative, perineural, and intravascular growth features that indicated a malignant potential.

IMPORTANCE: Germline SUFU pathogenic variants (PVs) have previously been associated with basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS) and multiple infundibulocystic basal cell carcinoma syndrome; however, a broader spectrum of cutaneous findings in patients with SUFU PVs has not been well delineated.
OBJECTIVE: To define the clinical and histopathologic spectrum of cutaneous findings in patients with germline SUFU PVs.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case series was conducted in multiple US academic dermatology, medical genetics, and medical oncology clinics between July 2014 and July 2022. The

We report the first case of an 82-year-old woman with five basal cell carcinomas within a large nevus sebaceous of the trunk. Nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn is a congenital cutaneous hamartoma affecting 0.3% of newborns. Clinical diagnosis is based on its distinctive hairless, orange-brown appearance. Up to 51% of nevus sebaceous may exhibit secondary neoplasia, and basal cell carcinoma is thought to occur in approximately 1% of lesions. Our patient presented with an asymptomatic, pigmented verrucous plaque on the upper right back that had been present since birth. Histopathology of concerning p

BACKGROUND: Mohs micrographic surgery is an established technique in the treatment of cutaneous neoplasms. It offers higher cure rates and the main indications are non-melanoma malignant skin tumors. Few studies have been performed on the treatment of rare tumors through this technique.
OBJECTIVE: To study rare skin tumors and rare variants of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma submitted to Mohs micrographic surgery in a tertiary service in relation to frequency, disease-free evolution, and applicability of this surgical procedure for this group of tumors.
METHODS: This was a r

Basaloid neoplasms of the head and neck region pose a specific challenge both for clinicians and pathologists. It is a diverse group of neoplasms that include benign as well as malignant entities. These neoplasms can arise from various head and neck subsites such as skin, salivary gland, and sinonasal tract. Cytological diagnosis of these tumors is extremely difficult due to morphological overlap with other biphasic tumors and within the basaloid group itself. Here, we are presenting a case of basaloid neoplasm which turned out to be a basal cell adenocarcinoma of the left parotid gland on pos

A number of hereditary tumor syndromes are associated with characteristic dermal neoplasms and knowledge and early diagnosis of these lesions may facilitate the diagnostic of the underlying syndrome. These syndromes include Muir-Torre syndrome, associated with cystic sebaceomas, Cowden syndrome, associated with multiple tricholemmomas, Carney complex associated with multiple superficial angiomyxomas, Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome associated with multiple fibrofolliculomas, tuberous sclerosis associated with multiple facial angiofibromas and so-called Koenen tumors, patients with renal cell cancer as

Induction of delayed-type hypersensitivity challenge reactions to microbial antigens at sites of neoplasms involving the skin resulted in regression of mycosis fungoides, reticulum cell sarcoma, superficial basal cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the breast. Similar reactions induced by lymphokine preparations also resulted in regression of lesions of mycosis fungoides and superficial basal cell carcinoma. The role of the large monomuclear cells in the inflammatory infiltrate of the delayed hypersensitivity reaction in eliciting the tumor regression is discussed. It is proposed that these l

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most commonly occurring neoplasm in patients with Gorlin syndrome. It is widely accepted that multiple basal cell carcinomas simultaneously develop in middle-aged patients with this syndrome. However, the presence of driver genes other than the PTCH1 in Gorlin syndrome has not been explored. This study aimed to identify common gene mutations other than PTCH1 in simultaneously occurring basal cell carcinomas in patients with Gorlin syndrome via exome sequencing analysis.
METHODS: Next-generation sequencing analysis was performed using four basal ce

OBJECTIVE: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) diagnosis of salivary gland neoplasms with epithelial/myoepithelial cells but rare or no stroma is usually difficult. Our aim was to study the cytomorphology of this cohort of FNA cases and evaluate the clinical follow-up.
STUDY DESIGN: The diagnostic terminology for this group of aspirates was 'favor an epithelial/myoepithelial neoplasm of the salivary gland'. The cytologic smears of 32 such cases were retrieved and showed cellular smears with bland-appearing or mildly atypical epithelial and myoepithelial cells without typical chondromyxoid stroma see

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common human neoplasm, with hundreds of thousands of new cases occurring on an annual basis. Involvement of the scrotum is quite rare, with fewer than twenty-five reported cases. We present a patient with a basal cell carcinoma of the scrotum and review the literature regarding this infrequently documented site.

The incidence of contralateral breast cancer is high and constant with age, around five per 1000 women who had a primary breast cancer. For other neoplasms, the pattern of incidence of second primary neoplasms with age is less known, particularly as for only a few neoplasms the site of origin is not totally removed, and hence remains at risk of a second primary. Using the dataset from the Cancer Registry of the Swiss Canton of Vaud, we show that the incidence of second neoplasms is constant with age also after oral and pharyngeal, colorectal cancers, cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) and basa

Gorlin syndrome or nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is an autosomal dominant condition mainly characterized by the development of mandibular keratocysts which often have their onset during the second decade of life and/or multiple basal cell carcinoma (BCC) normally arising during the third decade. Cardiac and ovarian fibromas can be found. Patients with NBCCS develop the childhood brain malignancy medulloblastoma (now often called primitive neuro-ectodermal tumor [PNET]) in 5% of cases. The risk of other malignant neoplasms is not clearly increased, although lymphoma and meningiom

Red dot basal cell carcinoma is a distinctive clinical subtype of basal cell carcinoma. It has been reported in eight individuals with a male to female ratio of 1:1; and the patients' ages ranged from 50 to 74 years. All patients had prior history of actinic keratoses and basal cell carcinoma. In addition, some patients also had prior squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, and/or dysplastic nevus. The tumor was usually of recent onset, asymptomatic, and on sun-exposed skin. It was most commonly located on the nose (five patients); other sites were the upper lip, the mid back, or thigh-ea

CONTEXT: Skin neoplasms include the most common malignancies affecting humans. Many show an ultraviolet (UV)-induced pathogenesis and often affect the head and neck region.
OBJECTIVE: To review literature on cutaneous neoplasms that show a predilection for the head and neck region and that are associated with molecular alterations.
DATA SOURCES: Literature review.
CONCLUSIONS: Common nonmelanoma skin cancers, such as basal and squamous cell carcinomas, show a UV-induced pathogenesis. Basal cell carcinomas are characterized by molecular alterations of the Hedgehog pathway, affecting patched

The authors describe the incidence of new primary cancers among 4,639 cases of squamous cell skin cancer (SCC) diagnosed between 1974 and 1994 in the cancer registries of the Swiss cantons of Vaud and Neuchâtel (total person-years at risk = 23,152). Overall, 729 metachronous cancers were observed versus 527.6 expected, corresponding to a standardized incidence ratio (SIR) of 1.4 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.3-1.5). After exclusion of skin cancers, however, 384 second primary neoplasms were observed versus 397.2 expected (SIR = 1.0). Excesses were observed for cancers of the lip (SIR = 3.1)

Basal cell carcinomas (BCC) are the most common cutaneous malignant neoplasms affecting fair-skinned human beings. They may progressively enlarge and spread by peripheral extension. Intracranial invasion is very rare. A case of a giant BCC of the scalp invading directly into the left hemisphere through the frontal and parietal lobe and meninges is presented. Brain invasion along Virchow-Robin's spaces is demonstrated histopathologically. A review of literature failed to disclose a previous report of similar extensive and fatal cerebral invasion from a basal cell carcinoma of the scalp.

The skin has the necessary elements to respond to growth hormone (GH) and suffers clinical changes in the pathological circumstances of excess and deficiency of GH. The GH has been involved in the development of different types of human neoplasms. Based on these data, we have studied the GH receptor (GHR) expression in acrochordons, seborrheic keratosis, melanocytic nevi, histiocytomas, squamous cell carcinomas, basal cell carcinomas, and malignant melanomas by means of the immunohistochemistry with the monoclonal antibody MAb 263. All the entities showed immunoreactivity for GHR. In the histi

Infrared spectroscopy, by probing the molecular vibration of chemical bonds, directly indicates tissue biochemistry. An expanding body of literature suggests that infrared spectra distinguish diseased from normal tissue. The authors used infrared spectroscopy to examine basal cell carcinoma to explore distinctive characteristics of basal cell carcinoma versus normal skin samples and other skin neoplasms. Spectra of epidermis, tumor, follicle sheath, and dermis were acquired from unstained frozen sections, and analyzed qualitatively, by t-tests and by linear discriminant analyses. Dermal spectr

Malignant tumors of the salivary gland ducts exhibit variable morphological patterns and biological behavior. This group of neoplasms includes some uncommon lesions that originate from the intercalated ducts, such as polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma, epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma and basal cell adenocarcinoma, and other that arise from the excretory duct, such as the salivary duct carcinoma. One hundred and seventy-seven malignant neoplasms of the major and minor salivary glands were reviewed. There were 23 cases of uncommon types of ductal carcinomas. Age, sex, location, size of tum
