Prevalence of synchronous bilateral/contralateral tonsil carcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to identify the prevalence of synchronous contralateral tonsil carcinoma (SCTC) amongst patients with tonsil carcinoma or head and neck squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary (HNSCCUP). Thirteen retrospective studies, comprising 2623 patients, were analysed, revealing an overall pooled SCTC prevalence of 4%, rising to 10% in HNSCCUP cases. HPV/p16 positivity was associated with SCTC prevalence of 3%, while HPV/p16 negativity was greater at 8%. Clinical or imaging evaluations often missed SCTC preoperatively, emphasising the import

Synchronous quadruple primary neoplasms: glioblastoma, neuroendocrine tumor, schwannoma and sessile serrated adenoma in a patient with history of prostate cancer.

Quadruple synchronous primary neoplasms are exceedingly rare with only one case reported in the English literature. We herein report a case of synchronous quadruple primary neoplasms in a 70-year-old Arabic male with a history of prostate cancer who presented to our hospital for work-up of a brain mass found at an outside hospital. Subsequent (18)Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography demonstrated a 5.9-cm temporoparietal mass and three additional lesions, each with increased maximum standardized uptake value (SUV(max)). Histologic examination, immunohistochemistry and cytogenet

Synchronous anaplastic oligodendroglioma and carcinoma tongue: a rare association.

We present the case of a 45-year-old female patient who harbored two synchronous primary malignant neoplasms-an anaplastic oligodendroglioma of the right frontal lobe and a squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. Both neoplasms were in advanced stage and carried a dismal prognosis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documentation in the english literature of such a presentation. The purpose of this article is to alert clinicians to this possibility and to outline the management approach in a different manner in patients presenting with multiple primary neoplasms.

Synchronous Triple Primary Gastrointestinal Tract Malignancies: A Case Report.

Multiple primary malignant neoplasms are defined as the occurrence of two or more distinct malignant neoplasms in a single patient. However, synchronous triple primary malignant neoplasms have rarely been reported. We present the case of a 54-year-old male patient who was referred to our outpatient clinic after abnormal findings were detected during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy screening at a local clinic. Comprehensive evaluation using endoscopy, computed tomography, and positron emission tomography led to the simultaneous diagnosis of early gastric, early esophageal, and sigmoid colon ca

A 30-year analysis of cardiac neoplasms at autopsy.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac neoplasms are rare and the vast majority are metastatic in origin. Symptoms of cardiac neoplasms (primary or metastatic) usually appear late in the course of the disease and are often ignored because of the more severe effects of the primary malignant disorder or its therapy. Consequently, cardiac neoplasms, especially metastatic ones, are often not discovered until autopsy. OBJECTIVES: To assess the incidence of cardiac neoplasms at autopsy and to determine the sites of origins of metastatic cardiac neoplasms. METHODS: The pathology records from consecutive autopsies p

Cystadenofibroma with Mullerian-Type Epithelium and Stroma in the Liver: A Report of an Unusual Diagnosis and Discussion of Possible Etiologies.

Primary cystic neoplasms in the liver with ovarian type stroma typically represent mucinous cystic neoplasms. These tumors contain a cuboidal to columnar epithelium with variably mucinous cytoplasm. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports of primary hepatic cystic neoplasms with ovarian-type stroma and ciliated epithelial lining. We describe a case of a 53-year-old woman with a history of a multicystic mass in the right hepatic lobe that did not communicate with the biliary tree. The tumor contained multiple cysts with large papillae lined with ciliated Mullerian epithelium and sube

[Simultaneously diagnosed triple primary neoplasms--a case report].

Reported is a case of 71-year-old man who had triple primary neoplasms that were diagnosed simultaneously on admission. He visited our hospital for examination of an abnormal mass shadow seen in the right lower lobe of his chest in a roentgenogram. That was determined as being a small cell lung cancer. We simultaneously detected that a moderately differentiated tubular gastric adenocarcinoma and an olfactory groove meningioma were overlapped as well. Attention must be paid to multiple primary neoplasms, since some of these malignancies are predicted to overlap and the percentage of overlapped

Multiple primary cancers as a guide to heritability.

There are approximately 100 genes which when mutated are known to predispose to one or more forms of cancer. Currently, genetic testing is offered for many of these, either as single genes or as multi-gene panels. Features of hereditary cancer include a positive family history of cancer, early age of onset and the appearance of multiple primary cancers in one individual. In some cases multiple cancers may be of the same site (e.g., bilateral breast cancer) and in other cases they may be at different sites. Various combinations of cancer sites may be indicative of specific cancer syndromes such

From the archives of the AFIP. Primary tumors of the spine: radiologic pathologic correlation.

Primary tumors of the spine are relatively infrequent lesions compared with metastatic disease, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma. However, when a solitary lesion of the spine occurs, these neoplasms represent an important group of entities for diagnostic consideration. A wide variety of benign neoplasms can involve the spine, including osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, aneurysmal bone cyst, giant cell tumor, enostosis, and osteochondroma. Common primary nonlymphoproliferative malignant neoplasms of the spine include chordoma, chondrosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma or primitive neuroectodermal tumor, and os

[Chinese expert consensus on multiple primary cancers of hypopharynx and esophagus].

Hypopharyngeal cancer and esophageal cancer often occur synchronously or metachronously. Timely screening, diagnosis and individual treatment are important to improve the prognosis of patients. At present, there is no clinical guideline or consensus in this cross-cutting area in China, and there is a need of consistent diagnosis and treatment recommendation for these patients. Under the sponsorship of the Committee of Esophageal Cancer in China Anti-Cancer Association, the Chinese Working Group on Cooperative Diagnosis and Treatment of Hypopharyngeal and Esophageal Cancer was established by do

Breast cancer and synchronous multiple myeloma as a diagnostic challenge: Case report and review of literature.

Multiple myeloma is a hematological malignancy, which sometimes creates difficulties in diagnosis, based on the presence of monoclonal protein in serum/urine and plasmocyte infiltration in the bone marrow, and on the other hand, synchronous cancers are also a diagnostic challenge. We present a case report of a patient with concurrent breast cancer and multiple myeloma. A 68-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with diagnosis of left breast cancer in first stage of the disease. In the past, she had had several episodes of thrombocytopenia, leucocytosis, and mild anaemia, which were follo

Classic Kaposi's sarcoma as a first primary neoplasm.

Patients with a diagnosis of primary classic Kaposi's sarcoma (CKS) appear to be at a higher risk of multiple neoplasms. We analyzed a nation-wide series of 1,016 patients with a primary CKS occurring between 1961 and 1992 in the Jewish Israeli population to evaluate the risk of secondary neoplasms. The primary CKS and subsequent neoplasms were identified from the Israel Cancer Registry. All HIV-seropositive Kaposi's sarcoma cases were excluded. The expected number of second primary neoplasms was calculated after stratifying by age, origin and gender. Of the CKS patients, 61 developed a second

[Multiple tumors in the upper aerodigestive tract--a retrospective study].

The authors observe an increasing incidence of multiple primary neoplasms in the upper aerodigestive tract. Out of 1231 patients with neoplasms, 110 (= 8.9%) developed another tumour. Following oral cavity tumours the incidence of second tumours was twice as high as in other localities. Privileged site of second tumours following cancer of the larynx is the lung, after oral cavity neoplasms the hypopharynx and larynx. The mean interval between first and secondary neoplasms was 4.4 years. In tumour follow-up therapy it is recommended to look not only for relapses and metastases but also for sec

Panendoscopy as a screening procedure for simultaneous primary tumors in head and neck cancer.

Head and neck cancer is often associated with second primary neoplasms. These cancers most commonly involve other regions of the head and neck, esophagus, and lung. The majority of cases are also squamous cell carcinomas. In view of this rather frequent occurrence of multiple primary cancers and how they adversely affect the patient's survival, it becomes imperative to analyze how the clinician can intervene effectively. One such approach is to detect multiple primaries as early as possible. As such, panendoscopy as a part of the tumor-staging procedure has been advocated by many investigators

Familial melanoma and multiple primary melanoma.

Cutaneous melanoma (CM) has the highest mortality rates among the most common skin cancers, and its incidence is rising worldwide, thus representing a significant health care burden. CM is considered the most lethal skin cancer if not detected and treated during its early stages. Susceptibility to CM is also associated with an increased presence of atypical nevi and the occurrence of multiple primary melanoma. Personal history of CM increases the risk of developing a second melanoma by 5-8%. A family history of melanoma has also been strongly associated with an increased risk of melanoma. Appr

Development of morphologically diverse benign neoplasms preceding metachronous oral squamous cell carcinoma: A rare case report.

Eighteen months after the resection and micro-vascular reconstruction of central ossifying fibroma of the right mandible in a 54-year-old male patient, there occur two synchronous neoplasms, basal cell adenoma (BSA) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Two years after reconstructive surgery, the patient reported a second primary OSCC on the left retromolar mucosa. This case reports two morphologically diverse benign neoplasms preceding metachronous OSCC in one individual. While field cancerization makes the entire mucosa susceptible to the development of multiple primary malignant neoplasm

Second primary cancers in the Vaud and Neuchâtel Cancer Registries.

An increasing proportion of new cancers is registered in patients who have received a previous cancer diagnosis. As data are inconsistent across studies, we provided information for populations long covered by valid cancer registration. Data were derived from the Swiss cancer Registries of Vaud and Neuchâtel (885,000 inhabitants). Patients diagnosed with a new malignancy (except skin basal and squamous cell carcinomas) during the period 2005-2010 were included. Over the period 2005-2010, 24,859 patients were registered with incident cancer. Of these, 3127 (13%) had multiple primary cancers and
