Numb chin syndrome is a rare sensory neuropathy of the mental nerve characterized by numbness, hypoesthesia, paraesthesia, and very rarely pain. Dental causes, especially iatrogenic ones, maxillofacial trauma, or malignant neoplasm are etiologic factors for this rare syndrome. Many malignant and metastatic neoplasms are causing this syndrome, like primary osteosarcoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and mandibular metastasis of primary carcinoma of breast, lung, thyroid, kidney, prostate, and nasopharynx. Haematological malignancies like acute lymphocytic leukaemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma,

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Perineuriomas are benign soft tissue neoplasms arising from the peripheral nerve sheath. They account for 1% of all peripheral nerve sheath tumors. To our knowledge, few reported cases of isolated orbital perineurioma are found in the English-written literature, including three cases of hybrid perineurioma/schwannoma or neurofibroma and one case of atypical perineurioma involving the bulbar conjunctiva.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We are reporting a case of orbital perineurioma presenting with right eye proptosis in a 45-year-old male with no other relevant systemic ass

A Clydesdale mare was examined for weight loss, inappetence, ptyalism, and dysphagia. The main abnormality revealed by serum biochemistry was a marked hyperglobulinemia, and protein electrophoresis revealed a monoclonal gammopathy in the gamma region. The urine was positive for Bence Jones proteins. These findings suggested a plasma cell tumor. The neoplasm could not be located with extensive antemortem examination. At postmortem, neoplastic cells morphologically compatible with plasma cells and positive for equine IgG with imunoperoxidase staining infiltrated the pericardium, mediastinal stro

MPNSTs (malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors) are a highly malignant group of soft tissue sarcomas and carry a very poor prognosis. Metastasis to bilateral adrenal glands is very rare in such group of neoplasms. We discuss a case of 85-year-old man who was diagnosed with MPNST from prevertebral mass with metastases to bilateral adrenal glands and bone marrow from the beginning and role of serial F-FDG PET/CT scans in response assessment first to sunitinib (tyrosine kinase inhibitor) and then to liposomal doxorubicin.

Acoustic neurilemmomas are more frequent, larger, and more vascular in women, and such lesions have a rapidly progressive clinical course in pregnant women; these findings suggest that the growth of these neoplasms may bear a relationship to certain hormone levels. Tissues from 8 patients with acoustic neurilemmoma (3 men and 5 women) were studied by a new fluorescent steroid histochemical technique to detect the presence of estrogen receptors in or on neoplastic cells. Estrogen receptor protein has also been found in meningioma cells in women. Neurilemmoma of the acoustic nerve is the second

A 49 year old man had had headache and some cranial nerve paralyses for about three years. A tentative diagnosis of meningioma of the skull base or chordoma was made before his death. In the postmortem examination, a large tumor lying on the skull base was found. The sella turcica, a part of the basilar bone were destroyed. The neoplasm had invaded the adjacent cerebrum, cranial nerves and extra-cranial tissues. Histopathologically, the lesion showed a typical poorly-differentiated plasmacytoma. Both clinic and pathologic characteristics of this tumor are discussed and the literature on solita

EWSR1-SMAD3-positive fibroblastic tumor is a recently characterized neoplasm with distinct clinicopathologic features and recurrent EWSR1-SMAD3 gene fusion. ESFT typically presents as a small, painless tumor in extremity subcutaneous tissues. Their behavior is benign, although they are prone to local recurrence. They typically comprise two components: intersecting fascicles of overlapping, uniform plump spindle cells, and less cellular hyalinized areas containing stippled calcifications. Immunohistochemically, the cells consistently show diffuse ERG nuclear expression, while other markers are

Serum response factor (SRF) is a ubiquitously expressed transcription factor that regulates immediate early genes, cytoskeletal organization, and muscle differentiation. Although SRF plays critical roles in development and cell growth, genomic alterations of SRF have long appeared absent in human neoplasms. Recently, however, recurrent SRF gene rearrangements have been identified in a spectrum of soft tissue tumors with myogenic features, including rhabdomyosarcomas, perivascular tumors, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors, myoepitheliomas and peripheral nerve sheath tumors. This review summar

Sixteen paragangliomas of the neck were reviewed. Lesions were found in the carotid body (n = 12), vagal nerve (n = 3) and larynx (n = 1). While paragangliomas were often misdiagnosed clinically, CT scanning defined the extent of the disease. MR was able to accurately characterize the tumors as highly vascular. Multiplanar imaging, exquisite tissue contrast and anatomic detail allowed better display of the relationship between these neoplasms and surrounding carotid sheath vessels and intracranial structures. MR constitutes the imaging modality of choice in carotid body tumor. Arteriography is

This case illustrates that massive tumor size, ulceration, or history of multiple recurrences are not absolute prerequisites for metastatic BCC. It supports the hypothesis that tumor proximity to major lymphatic systems or large-caliber blood vessels may be of significance. BCCs originating in skin overlying the parotid gland have the potential to penetrate to a rich vascular and lymphatic plexus as well as compromise the integrity of the facial nerve. Early treatment of these neoplasms utilizing accurate methods of microscopic control appears warranted to prevent the serious consequences of r

BACKGROUND: Plasma-cell neoplasms of the head and neck include extramedullary plasmacytoma and solitary plasmocytoma of bone or may represent a local manifestation of multiple myeloma. Involvement of sphenoid sinus has been rarely reported in multiple myeloma.
METHODS: We present the case of a 77-year-old man with a 3-year-history of benign monoclonal IgG-lambda gammopathy who developed left sixth-nerve palsy and malaise.
RESULTS: Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging scan disclosed a large soft-tissue mass of the sphenoid sinus with bone destruction. Sphenoid sinus biopsy

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are rare neoplasms, accounting for only 5% of all malignant soft-tissue sarcomas. This is the case report of a 28-year-old male patient with a MPNST located in the anterior mediastinum, originating from the phrenic nerve. The patient presented with an abnormal shadow on chest radiography and a 10-cm mass in the right anterior mediastinum was identified on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The patient subsequently underwent surgical resection. The tumor originated from the right phrenic nerve and was tightly adherent to the mid

In terms of their morphology, clinical associations and behavior, peripheral nerve sheath tumors are among the most varied of human neoplasm. Not surprisingly, such tumors are subject to frequent misdiagnosis. This is particularly true of the spectrum of schwannomas which include: a) conventional schwannoma, a histologically benign tumor which, on occasion, is destructive of surrounding osseous structures, b) the relatively recently described cellular schwannoma, a tumor that histologically simulates malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST), c) plexiform schwannoma which, particularly i

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are rare neoplasms, usually arising from somatic soft tissues or peripheral nerves. Primary MPNST of the scalp is extremely rare, with only a single case reported so far. Here, we describe an unusual case of scalp MPNST in a 50-year-old male. The tumor was associated with bony projection, intracranial extension and underlying bone destruction. The tumor was treated with complete surgical excision followed by adjuvant radiotherapy. Histologically, the tumor showed malignant spindle cells with focal S-100 positivity on immunohistochemistry and a

Melorheostosis was diagnosed in a 13 year old female. Two years later an x-ray of the skull showed an calcified intracerebral mass. At the age of 18 years the patient died. The autopsy confirmed the diagnosis of melorheostosis and revealed a meningioma of falx cerebri in close proximity to predominantly intraventricular calcified tissue. A neurinoma of the left acoustic nerve was also found. In the literature melorheostosis has been anecdotally described in combination with nevi, hemangiomas, pelvic lipoma, lipoma of the spinal cord, chondrofibromas of the median nerve, tuberous sclerosis and

A 67-year-old man with multiple comorbidities presented with 3 weeks of orbital pain, proptosis, and no light perception vision in the left eye. Examination was notable for a left orbital apex syndrome with CN III, VI palsies, an optic neuropathy, and central retinal vein occlusion. Magnetic resonance imaging of the orbits was notable for extensive enhancement, enlargement, and T2 hyperintensity of the optic nerve, with perineural sheath enhancement, and chiasmal hyperintensity. Inflammatory workup and lumbar puncture were unremarkable. No improvement was seen after a 3-day course of intraveno

In acoustic neurinoma surgery, the surgeon is required to find a cleavage plane between the facial nerve and the tumor, and with the aid of the operating microscope this is usually achieved by fine dissection. A histological specimen of the nerve-tumor interface is available only if the facial nerve was hopelessly adherent to the tumor (usually a large or giant neoplasm) and the surgeon decided to sever the nerve to obtain a complete removal. The authors have examined immunohistochemically the nerve-tumor interface of 20 such facial nerves (six cases of neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) and 14 of non-

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Schwannomas are a rare group of soft-tissue tumors that are derived from the peripheral nerve sheath and rarely develop in the retroperitoneum.
METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: We reviewed the clinicopathological features of 4 patients referred to our unit between October 1999 and March 2004 who on radiological examination were diagnosed with pancreatic, adrenal, psoas and retroperitoneal fat tissue tumors and subsequently underwent surgical treatment.
RESULTS: The preoperative diagnosis was incorrect in all cases. At time of surgery, we found a mass probably arising from the a

Plexiform schwannomas are relatively rare, benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors, which usually arise in either the dermis or subcutaneous tissue, although rare cases originate in skeletal muscle or other deep somatic soft tissue sites. These tumors may occur singly or as multiple lesions and may be localized to one anatomic site or diffusely distributed. Rare cases have been associated with "schwannomatosis" as well as type 1 neurofibromatosis (von Recklinghausen's disease). We report an unusual case of multiple cutaneous plexiform schwannomas associated with bilateral acoustic neuromas as we
