Second malignant neoplasms in childhood cancer survivors in a tertiary paediatric oncology centre in Hong Kong, China.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survivors were at risk of development of second malignant neoplasms. The aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence, risk factors and outcome of second malignant neoplasms in childhood cancer survivors in a tertiary paediatric oncology centre in Hong Kong, China. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients with childhood cancer treated in Children's Cancer Centre in Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong, China between May 1984 and June 2009. Case records of patients who developed second malignant neoplasms were reviewed. RESULTS: Totally 1374 new c

Predictive models for overall survival in breast cancer patients with a second primary malignancy: a real-world study in Shanghai, China.

BACKGROUND: The incidents of second primary malignancy (SPM) is increasing among breast cancer (BC) patients with long-term progression, adversely affecting survival. The purpose of this study was to screen independent overall survival (OS) risk factors and establish nomograms to predict the survival probabilities of BC patients with SPM. METHOD: A total of 163 BC patients with SPM were recruited during 2002-2015 from a total of 50 hospitals in Shanghai, China. Two nomograms to predict survival from primary BC and SPM diagnosis were constructed based on independent factors screened from multi

A rare presentation of an oral cavity metachronous malignancy: Case Report.

INTRODUCTION OR BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancers, particularly those involving the oral cavity, are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates globally. Despite advancements in surgical techniques, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, the development of second primary malignancies (SPMs) remains a critical concern for longterm survivors. The occurrence of metachronous double primary malignancies, where the second primary cancer arises at a different anatomical site and time, poses additional diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a rare case of a 42-year old

[Three Cases of Bilateral Metachronous Testicular Tumors].

We present three cases of bilateral metachronous testicular tumors. The patient in case 1 had a history of left orchiectomy for undescended testis at the age of 19. The pathological findings revealed germ cell neoplasia in situ. Twenty-four years later (age=43), he was diagnosed with right testicular tumor with lymph node and lung metastasis (stage IIIc). Right orchiectomy was performed, and the pathological finding showed nonseminomatous germ cell tumor. He underwent chemotherapy, followed by lymph node dissection and lung metastasectomy. The patient in case 2 had a history of left orchiectom

Neoplasm risk in individuals with neurofibromatosis 1 - a Danish nationwide cohort study with long-term follow-up.

BACKGROUND: As larger population-based studies assessing neoplasm risk in neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) are limited, we aimed to evaluate overall neoplasm risk, specific cancer types, and second primary cancers. METHODS: Using Danish registries and clinical databases, we identified 2053 individuals with NF1 and 20,530 population comparisons. We calculated cumulative incidences for first and second primary neoplasms for the study population born 1971-2020 and for adult-onset cancers in the study population born 1951-2020. We used multistate models to estimate the probabilities of being neoplasm-fr

Synchronous resection of esophageal cancer and other organ malignancies: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Neoplasms arising in the esophagus may coexist with other solid organ or gastrointestinal tract neoplasms in 6% to 15% of patients. Resection of both tumors synchronously or in a staged procedure provides the best chances for long-term survival. Synchronous resection of both esophageal and second primary malignancy may be feasible in a subset of patients; however, literature on this topic remains rather scarce. AIM: To analyze the operative techniques employed in esophageal resections combined with gastric, pancreatic, lung, colorectal, kidney and liver resections and define posto

A systematic review of population-based studies on metachronous metastases of colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of metachronous metastases (MM) of colorectal (CRC), colon (CC), and rectal (RC) cancer of population-based studies has not been compiled in a systematic review previously. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched for primary studies of any design from inception until January 2021 and updated in August 2023 (CRD42021261648). The PRISMA guidelines were adopted, and the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale used for risk of bias assessment. Outcomes on overall and organ-specific MM were extracted. A narrative analysis followed. RESULTS: Out of

Histo-biological comparative analysis of bilateral breast cancer.

Bilateral breast cancer occurs in approximately 7% of surviving breast cancer patients. However, a dilemma exists concerning the notion of whether this represents a de novo second primary tumor versus a breast metastasis. We analyzed 81 patients with bilateral breast cancer, 47 (58%) synchronous tumors and 34 (42%) metachronous tumors. Additionally, charts were reviewed for age, family history, full histology data and biological receptors. We found there were no significant differences in concordance between the first and second primary tumors (in both synchronous and metachronous bilateral br

Bilateral Breast Cancer.

This article is a review of the characteristics of bilateral breast cancer (BBC). Synchronous bilateral breast cancer (SBBC) and metachronous bilateral breast cancer (MBBC) account for 2.9-3.9% and 4.1-4.6% of all new breast cancer cases, respectively. The risk factors for SBBC include older patient age and lobular histology. On the other hand, younger age, lobular histology, and positive family history (or genetic factors) are the risk factors for MBBC. Contralateral prophylactic mastectomy in patients with mutations in the BRCA1/2 genes has been reported to increase survival rates. The progn

Pharmacological prevention of second primary cancers: From chemoprevention to precision cancer interception.

BACKGROUND: The growing population of cancer survivors is increasingly exposed to the long-term risk of second primary cancers (SPCs), which represents a major source of morbidity and mortality. While current prevention mainly relies on surveillance and screening, pharmacological and immunological strategies may offer opportunities to reduce SPC incidence in selected high-risk populations. METHODS: This narrative review synthesises current evidence on pharmacological prevention strategies for SPCs, including endocrine therapy, aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, PARP inhibitors

Risk and outcome of second primary malignancy in patients with classical Hodgkin lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Hodgkin lymphoma survivors demonstrated increased risk of secondary primary malignancies (SPMs), but comprehensive analysis of the risk and outcome of SPMs in classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) patients has not yet been reported. METHODS: Patients with cHL from 1975 to 2017 were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database. Standardized incidence ratios were calculated for the risk of solid and hematologic SPMs in cHL patients compared to the general population. The outcome of cHL patients developing SPMs were assessed by performing survival, compet

Therapy-related acute promyelocytic leukemia: a systematic review.

The incidence of therapy-related acute promyelocytic leukemia (t-APL) is apparently rising. We systematically reviewed the English literature until March 15, 2013, and collected a total of 326 t-APL cases, with the following results: (1) t-APL affects predominantly middle-aged adults with a median age at diagnosis of 47 years and a female-to-male ratio of 1.7:1; (2) after an incidence peak at 2 years following the completion of treatment for the primary antecedent disease, the risk of developing t-APL quickly diminishes with time; (3) the four most common primary antecedent conditions are brea
