INTRODUCTION: Vascular malignancies are categorized into benign hemangiomas, malignant angiosarcomas, and tumors of intermediate malignancy. Retiform hemangioendothelioma (RH) is one of the rare diagnoses belonging to the class of intermediate malignancies that was initially diagnosed.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report, we have reported a rare case of RH, a locally aggressive, vascular tumor of malignant potential presenting at an unusual site. The most observed locations of this soft tissue tumor are skin and subcutaneous tissues of extremities; however, this case of RH was observed in

A 61-year-old Caucasian man presented with otalgia, dysarthria, and weight loss. Neurological examination revealed palatal hypomotility, and weakness of the facial and tongue muscles. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head demonstrated the presence of a soft tissue mass in the clivus. Histologic examination of resected tumor disclosed well-differentiated thyroid follicles that invaded the local osseous tissues. Physical examination and radioiodine images of the thyroid gland were normal. The serum thyroglobulin concentration was markedly elevated (1011 ng/mL). A 0.9-cm well-differentiated beni

Aims. Histopathologic benign mimickers of prostate cancer have mostly focused on glandular mimics, with non-glandular mimics mainly limited to inflammatory conditions. While there is a paucity of literature recognizing small cystic (presumably artifactual) spaces in transurethral resection specimens, in some instances they can become florid enough to mimic vascular or epithelial neoplasms. Herein, we detailed histologic, immunophenotypic, and clinicopathologic findings in a large series of specimens showing prominent diagnostically confounding cystic spaces. Methods and Results. Sixty specimen

Intraosseous hemangiomas are rare bony neoplasms that infrequently develop in the calvarium or facial bones. Due to their highly vascular nature, biopsy or resection of these tumors can present a surgical challenge, with reports of significant blood loss during tumor resection. Traditional surgical resection of intraosseous hemangiomas often includes the use of high speed oscillating or sagittal saws. Ultrasonic aspirators, which spare adjacent soft-tissue structures and minimize blood loss, have been successfully used in resection of firm soft tissue masses of the orbit; however, this technol

Expression of p63, a putative marker for epithelial or myoepithelial differentiation, has been used to distinguish spindle cell carcinoma from sarcoma. The specificity of p63 for epithelial differentiation has not been thoroughly evaluated however, since p63 expression has been explored in only a handful of mesenchymal tumors. After observing unexpected immunohistochemical staining for p63 in an angiosarcoma of the breast, we evaluated a series of benign and malignant vascular tumors to determine the frequency of such a finding. Nuclear immunoreactivity to p63 was detected, at least focally, i

Perirenal hemangiomas are rare benign vascular tumors that can present as indeterminate retroperitoneal masses and mimic renal, adrenal, or soft-tissue malignancy. We report the case of a 60-year-old woman who was incidentally found to have a right perirenal mass adjacent to the kidney and adrenal gland. Due to concern for a possible sarcoma, core biopsy was performed and demonstrated a benign vascular neoplasm compatible with hemangioma. This case highlights the diagnostic challenge of rare perirenal hemangiomas and the importance of considering vascular lesions when planning biopsy of enhanc

Hemangiopericytomas are malignant tumors arising from pericytic cells and account for less than 1% of all vascular neoplasms. We report a rare case of an extra- and intracranial dumbbell-shaped hemangiopericytoma originating from the soft tissue of the neck and penetrating the skull base with invasion into the posterior cranial fossa. The 59-year-old female patient presented with a large pulsating neck mass and reported weakness, abnormal fatigue and headache. MRI revealed an inhomogeneously enhancing tumor and cerebral angiography showed intensive vascularization. Preoperative embolization wa

The fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare primary tumors, accounting for 5% of malignant pleural neoplasms, which generally originate from sub-mesothelial mesenchymal tissue of the visceral pleura. These tumours generally exhibit clinical benign behavior although 12% of solitary fibrous tumors can be malignant and have worse outcomes. These tumors are considered "giant" when the lesion > 15 cm. Surgical treatment is the best choice for both benign and malignant neoplasms. We retrospectively analyzed the main case series of giant fibrous tumors of the pleura. In addition we report our experienc

Spindle cell tumors originating in the mediastinum are extremely rare. Due to the profusion of structures and organs located in the mediastinum, a wide variety of spindle cell neoplastic processes can develop in this location. These include various different tumor types including epithelial, vascular, lipomatous, fibroblastic and neural tumors among others. Many of these different tumor types are associated with specific immunohistochemical and molecular genetic profiles that help differentiate them from each other. Although spindle cell morphology has traditionally been associated with mesenc

Postpartum and posttermination complications are common causes of morbidity and mortality in women of reproductive age. These complications can be broadly categorized into vascular, infectious, surgical, and neoplastic etiologies, or are due to ectopic implantation of placental or endometrial tissue. Causes of postpartum vascular complications include retained products of conception, arteriovenous malformation, and pseudoaneurysm. Infectious entities include endometritis, abscess, wound cellulitis, and pelvic septic thrombophlebitis. Postsurgical complications include uterine scar dehiscence,

This observation reports the case of a soft tissue tumor occurring in a 11 years-old boy. On standard histologic staining, this tumor corresponded to an undifferentiated sarcoma of high grade of malignancy. Immuno-histochemical features (laminin, vimentin, UEA I and Factor VIII R-ag) and ultrastructural analysis (presence of Weibel-Palade bodies) led us to the diagnosis of angiosarcoma. This tumor is rarely reported in children and its prognosis remains unknown. Soft tissue angiosarcoma must be differentiated from Kaposi's sarcoma, epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, hemangiopericytoma and spind

A tumor in the anterior mediastinum was found in an adult male German Shorthaired Pointer. The dog presented with hypercalcemia that varied with the removal and recurrence of the tumor. The neoplasm was characterized by an encapsulated multilobed grey-white soft mass with stroma, and the recurrent tumor infiltrated veins and the heart. The tumor consisted of groups of clear cells with well outlined cytoplasmic boundaries separated by thin vascular stroma. These cells had few organelles, scattered clumps of glycogen, clear cytosol and prominent infolding and interdigitating plasma membranes and

Only few cases of vascular dissection and essential thrombocythemia association have been reported. To the best of our knowledge, we reported the second case of aortic dissection and essential thrombocythemia association in a 60-year-old man with positive JAK2V617F mutation who had no history of hypertension or connective tissue disorders. Through this case, we discussed the eventual existence of a causal relationship between the two conditions. We also suggested the use of hydroxyurea as a prevention treatment of thrombosis in myeloproliferative neoplasms.

This overview of mesenchymal tumors presenting in the skin and/or subcutis in children brings together the range of neoplasms and hamartomas which are seen in this age-group. It is not surprising from the perspective of the pediatric or general surgical pathologist that vascular anomalies, including true neoplasms and vascular malformations, are the common phenotypic category. Since there is considerable morphologic overlap among these lesions, clinicopathologic correlation may be more important than for many of the other mesenchymal tumors. The skin and subcutis are the most common sites of c

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 5.5-year-old intact female maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) was treated for recurrent stranguria and suspected cystitis. Due to lack of resolution, the wolf was anesthetized for further evaluation. The urinary bladder was firm on palpation, with a markedly thickened wall and no observable lumen on ultrasound. Neoplastic infiltration was suspected on double contrast cystogram and confirmed via surgical exploration. The lesion was inoperable a

Vascular lesions of the head and neck include vascular neoplasms, vascular malformations, and hypervascular lesions, derived from nonvascular soft-tissue elements. We retrospectively evaluated magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography images of vascular lesions located in the head and neck. Twelve patients (seven males, five females) aged 1-68 years (mean age, 35.25 years) were included in this study. Most of the vascular lesions in our study were histologically diagnosed. The lesions were as follows: a hemangioma located in the parotid space (n=1); a hemangioendothelioma located in t

Almost all neoplasms of the pancreas are derived from pancreatic epithelial components, including the most common pancreatic mass, primary pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Nonepithelial neoplasms comprise only 1%-2% of all pancreatic neoplasms. Although some may arise directly from intrapancreatic elements, many originate from mesenchymal, hematopoietic, or neural elements in the retroperitoneal peripancreatic space and grow into the pancreas. Once these tumors reach a certain size, it can be challenging to identify their origin. Because these manifest at imaging as intrapancreatic mas

The differential diagnosis of a tongue mass containing calcified bodies includes a phlebolith associated with vascular lesions, such as hemangioma and vascular malformation, and diseases such as neoplasm, osseous choristoma and hypercalcemic states, including hyperparathyroidism. The appearance of the calcified bodies on plain radiographs may help to differentiate these entities. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasonography are also useful for differentiating these soft tissue lesions. We report a 40-year-old man with a small mass containing a calcified body in the tip
