Characterization of ehrlichial organisms isolated from a wild mouse.

An infectious agent was isolated from the enlarged spleen of a wild mouse, Eothenomys kageus, by intraperitoneal inoculation of the spleen homogenate into laboratory mice. The laboratory mice developed splenomegaly, and the agent was maintained by serial passage of spleen homogenates in laboratory mice. The agent in the spleen homogenate was inactivated after incubation at 37 or 50 degrees C. Tetracyclines were effective in preventing infection of mice with this agent, but penicillin and sulfonamides were ineffective. Cytoplasmic inclusion bodies were observed in the peritoneal macrophages of

The prevalence of selected vector-borne diseases in dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) in the United Arab Emirates.

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) affecting dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) have considerable importance in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) because of the consequences associated with production decline and economic losses. Our study aimed to determine the prevalence of selected VBDs in camels in the UAE and identify risk factors. This research is currently affected by the low number of epidemiological molecular surveys addressing this issue. Blood samples were obtained from 425 dromedary camels from different locations across the UAE. Whole genomic DNA was isolated, and PCR screening was don

A systematic review of experimental evidence on microbial pathogen transmission by Stomoxys spp.

Vector-borne microbial pathogens previously isolated from Stomoxys spp. are currently considered to be emerging or re-emerging threats to public health and the veterinary sector. Transmission of pathogens by flies in the Stomoxys genus is largely mechanical, indicating that they can transmit a wide range of pathogens to a variety of hosts. This study evaluated the diversity of pathogens demonstrably transmitted by a variety of Stomoxys flies, concerning species diversity, host diversity, and geographic distribution. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) gu

Comparison of serological and molecular panels for diagnosis of vector-borne diseases in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBD) are caused by a diverse array of pathogens with varying biological behaviors that result in a wide spectrum of clinical presentations and laboratory abnormalities. For many reasons, the diagnosis of canine vector-borne infectious diseases can be challenging for clinicians. The aim of the present study was to compare CVBD serological and molecular testing as the two most common methodologies used for screening healthy dogs or diagnosing sick dogs in which a vector-borne disease is suspected. METHODS: We used serological (Anaplasma species, Babesi

Prevalence of Mycoplasma haemofelis, 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum', Bartonella species, Ehrlichia species, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum DNA in the blood of cats with anemia.

Hemoplasmas are known causes of anemia in some cats and some Bartonella species have been associated with anemia in people and in dogs. In this retrospective study, we used polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays to determine the prevalence rates of Mycoplasma haemofelis, 'Candidatus M haemominutum', A phagocytophilum, Ehrlichia species, and Bartonella species DNA in the blood of cats with anemia and a control group of healthy cats. DNA of the organisms was amplified from 22 of 89 cats with anemia (24.7%) and 20 of 87 healthy cats (23.0%). DNA of a hemoplasma was amplified from 18 of 89 cats wi

Infectious agents associated with diarrhoea in neonatal foals in central Kentucky: a comprehensive molecular study.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Diarrhoea caused by infectious agents is common in foals but there is no comprehensive molecular work-up of the relative prevalence of common agents and appearance of coinfections. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of 9 infectious agents in gastrointestinal (GI)-diseased and healthy foals with ages ranging from 1 to 20 weeks of age and to what degree coinfections are associated with clinical signs of GI disease. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective controlled observational study. METHODS: The population consisted of 88 Thoroughbred foals aged 2 days to 17 weeks bo

Trends in Bacterial Pathogens of Bats: Global Distribution and Knowledge Gaps.

Bats have received considerable recent attention for infectious disease research because of their potential to host and transmit viruses, including Ebola, Hendra, Nipah, and multiple coronaviruses. These pathogens are occasionally transmitted from bats to wildlife, livestock, and to humans, directly or through other bridging (intermediate) hosts. Due to their public health relevance, zoonotic viruses are a primary focus of research attention. In contrast, other emerging pathogens of bats, such as bacteria, are vastly understudied despite their ubiquity and diversity. Here, we describe the curr

The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio is associated with disease severity and infectious etiologies of colitis in horses presenting with acute colitis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate associations between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), nonsurvival, illness severity, and infectious etiologies. METHODS: This was a retrospective multicenter study that included 100 healthy horses and 444 horses presenting with acute diarrhea to 5 equine referral hospitals. Inclusion criteria were diarrhea duration < 48 hours, complete hemograms, and outcome data. Illness severity was assessed using systemic inflammatory response syndrome. The results of pathogen testing for Salmonella spp, equine coronavirus, Clostridium spp, and Neorickettsia risticii/findlay

Serological and molecular prevalence of canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Previous surveys in dogs from Korea indicated that dogs are exposed to a variety of vector- borne pathogens, but perception for a nation-wide canine vector-borne disease (CVBD) occurrence has been missing. We report here results of both serological and molecular prevalence studies for major CVBDs of dogs from all over the South Korean Peninsula except for Jeju Island. RESULTS: Serological survey of 532 outdoor dogs revealed the highest prevalence for Dirofilaria immitis (25.2%), followed by Anaplasma phagocytophilum (15.6%), Ehrlichia canis (4.7%) whereas Borrelia burgdorferi show

Metagenomic Approach to Characterizing Disease Epidemiology in a Disease-Endemic Environment in Northern Thailand.

In this study, we used a metagenomic approach to analyze bacterial communities from diverse populations (humans, animals, and vectors) to investigate the role of these microorganisms as causative agents of disease in human and animal populations. Wild rodents and ectoparasites were collected from 2014 to 2018 in Nan province, Thailand where scrub typhus is highly endemic. Samples from undifferentiated febrile illness (UFI) patients were obtained from a local hospital. A total of 200 UFI patient samples were obtained and 309 rodents and 420 pools of ectoparasites were collected from rodents (n

Seasonal and spatial trends of rickettsioses in Sri Lanka (2009-2023): Spatio-temporal analysis and climate-linked modeling.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsioses are caused by obligate intracellular bacteria of the order Rickettsiales, which includes several genera such as Rickettsia, Orientia, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Neoehrlichia, and Neorickettsia, and are significant yet under-recognised vector-borne febrile illnesses in Sri Lanka. Despite being a notifiable disease, gaps in understanding its spatial and temporal distribution hinder effective control and prevention. Therefore, the present study aimed at determining long-term epidemiological trends and environmental determinants of rickettsioses incidence in Sri Lanka between
