OBJECTIVES: Central sensitivity (CS) is defined as an increased responsiveness of nociceptive neurons in the central nervous system to normal or subthreshold inputs. CS has recently been linked to the psychological burden associated with chronic pain, such as fibromyalgia (FM). UNLABELLED: Conservative renal surgery (enucleation or segmentary resection) has become the gold standard treatment for small and peripheral malignant kidney lesions or in cases of reduced renal function or bilateral lesions. We report on a 17-year-old white woman with multiple bilateral renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs) in the absence of tuberous sclerosis. Multiple hyperdense lesions were detected in both kidneys by sonography. A computed tomography (CT) scan confirmed mainly fatty tissue. BACKGROUND/AIMS: Renal tubules undergo oxidative injury in various nephropathies. It is unknown whether tubular cells possess mechanisms to attenuate this form of injury. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), the rate-limiting enzyme in heme catabolism, may provide such a mechanism by reducing levels of free heme, a prooxidant molecule, and by limiting activity of heme-containing prooxidant enzymes. Determination of the distribution of HO-1 in the nephron may identify those segments where HO-1 can afford protection against oxidative injury.

Acute renal failure was induced in rats by clamping the renal artery for 45 min. After reestablishing renal blood flow, tubular heterogeneity was observed, with (1) seemingly normal tubules, (2) dilated tubules and (3) collapsed tubules. PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: This review summarizes recent pivotal studies demonstrating the importance of nephron number as a potential clinical marker of kidney health, and highlights technological advances aimed at facilitating the clinical measurement of nephron number in vivo in individuals. Finally, we summarize clinical applications in which measurements of nephron number will likely lead to improved patient care, and discuss challenges to the deployment of technologies to measure nephron number in humans.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The consequences of climate change, including heat and extreme weather events impact kidney function in adults and children. The impacts of climate change on kidney development during gestation and thereby on kidney function later in life have been poorly described. Clinical evidence is summarized to highlight possible associations between climate change and nephron mass.

Congenital nephron number varies widely in the human population and individuals with low nephron number are at risk of developing hypertension and chronic kidney disease.
