Sialic acid-containing lipopolysaccharides (LPS) were isolated from six bacterial strains of the family Enterobacteriaceae. We have studied the specificity of antibodies to mucin in patients with PFL and asymptomatic antibody-positive individuals. Clostridium botulinum produces a large toxin complex (L-TC) composed of neurotoxin (BoNT) and non-toxic proteins. In animal botulism, BoNT or L-TC is absorbed via the intestinal epithelium. Evidence is presented that monoclonal antibody BA-1, directed against a marker (CD24) of human lymphocytes of B cell lineage, recognizes a sialic acid-dependent epitope.
