Acoustic neuroma in the pregnant patient has been described infrequently. The symptoms of acoustic neuroma can commence or worsen during the last 3 or 4 months of pregnancy. In women, acoustic tumors have been shown generally to be larger and more vascular, and some acoustic tumors contain estrogen receptors. This is a report of our management of two patients with acoustic neuroma who presented early in pregnancy. Surgery was delayed to the second trimester in each, to avoid spontaneous abortion. Both patients underwent translabyrinthine tumor removal at 18-19 weeks gestation, and each had an …

A 45-year-old Pakistani woman reported to a clinic in Karachi with a one-year history of hypopigmented lesions on the left side of the face and neck. On first presentation the lesions were rough-surfaced and hypoaesthetic; the clinical findings in this highly endemic area of the world suggested macular tuberculoid leprosy. The patient was treated with dapsone for a period of 5 years, but with no change in the appearance or size of the lesions. Subsequent biopsies revealed an unusual neuromatoid pathology in the dermis, in which axons were absent on light and electron microscopy, with neurilemm…

Morton's neuroma is a common pathologic entity that, traditionally, was considered to be an isolated tumor that rarely affected more than 1 interdigital space. However, in recent years, multiple neuromas have become more common in our day-to-day practice. The objective of the present study was to assess the frequency with which Morton's neuroma appears in the different interdigital spaces. A retrospective study was performed of 279 feet that had been surgically treated for Morton's neuroma using a dorsal approach during a 9-year period (from January 2003 to December 2011), with an ultrasound s…

Over a period of 4 years, 14 cases of traumatic neuroma were detected in laryngoscopic biopsy specimens. The approximate incidence was 10% of biopsy specimens from this area. The most frequent symptoms in descending order of frequency, were hoarseness, dysphagia, choking spells, intermittent aphonia, and cough. Six (43%) of the 14 lesions contained mature ganglion cells. These lesions have not been reported in the pharyngeal region, and I suspect that in the past a few similar conditions have been diagnosed as ganglioneuromas. Because the lesion appears to be the cause of the symptoms and is a…

Postamputation stump and phantom pain are highly prevalent but remain a difficult condition to treat. The underlying mechanisms are not fully clarified, but growing evidence suggests that changes in afferent nerves, including the formation of neuromas, play an important role. The main objective of this cross-sectional study was to investigate whether ultrasound-verified neuroma swellings are more frequent in amputees with postamputation pain than in amputees without pain (primary outcome). Sixty-seven amputees were included. Baseline characteristics including the frequency and intensity of spo…

Neuromas are benign hyperplastic proliferations of normal peripheral nerve components. These can be associated with some genodermatoses, namely Cowden syndrome and multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) 2B, especially when numerous lesions are present. Given the potential for malignancy (such as breast cancer, pheochromocytoma, and thyroid cancer) associated with these syndromes, other features indicative of either syndrome should be evaluated in patients presenting with multiple cutaneous neuromas. The evaluation should include a thorough family history and complete physical, dermatologic, and op…

This article reviews 12 patients with bilateral acoustic neuromas. The sex incidence was equal and the mean age at diagnosis was 26.2 years. The family history was positive in nine of the patients. Five patients have had incomplete surgical removal of acoustic neuromas on both sides. Two of them are completely deaf and the other three have severe sensorineural hearing loss in one ear and no hearing in the other ear. In five patients the tumour on one side has been operated on and the other side is being observed with at least short-term preservation of good hearing. The remaining two patients …

We report a case of a traumatic neuroma of the nose. It was an unusual site for two distinct types of tissue response to skin and soft trauma that exceeded the reparative needs of the body. In the first instance, a small cutaneous nerve was sectioned, and its inability to establish continuity distally resulted in a neuroma. In the second instance, the excision site of the neuroma was reinjured, and an abnormal connective tissue response occurred, resulting in a hypertrophic scar or keloid. Both were treated similarly with excision, and ultimately with local steroid injection with satisfactory …

The authors present their experience of more than 25 years, now in excess of 1200 patients, with cerebellopontine angle tumors. This article focuses on the management of planned subtotal resection of acoustic tumors in five subjects, and unexpected "residual" discovered by MRI scanning in 10 cases, which represents, to the best of the authors' knowledge, a residual rate of 1% of operated patients. The rate of residual tumor is as high as 19% in some series and, in part, depends on the surgical approach. For the purpose of this article, the authors did not include their cases of neurofibromatos

Acoustic neuroma results from abnormal proliferation of Schwann cells. These tumors originate in the region of Scarpa's ganglion at the junction of peripheral and central myelin of the vestibular nerve located in the internal auditory canal (IAC). The bony confine of the IAC houses the VII and the VIII cranial nerves. The presence of tumor mass compresses these structures. The growing tumor mass may also prolapses into the cerebellopontine angle (CPA). With continued growth, the tumor eventually compresses on the brain stem and cerebellum. Despite the benign nature of these tumors, the clinica…

OBJECTIVE: To describe RMI aspects of leg stump neuroma and to evaluate RMI scan interest for neuroma diagnosis and management.
POPULATION AND METHOD: During a 2 years period, 224 amputated patients consulting for pain or prostetics problems were studied. In 10 cases, a characteristic pain leads to neurona diagnosis. This is described as a sensation of ascending or descending electric shock induced by the stimulation of an identified point with a reproducible topography. In all these cases, RMI scans were performed. In thirty two other cases, a RMI scan was performed to confirm a pathology (b…
