Unraveling microbial characteristics of simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal in a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor.

This study describes the simultaneous removal of carbon, ammonium, and phosphate from domestic wastewater by a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) which was operated for 360 days. During the operation, the maximum removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) reached 93.1%, 83.98%, and 96.41%, respectively. Statistical analysis showed that the MABR could potentially treat wastewater with a high ammonium concentration and a relatively low C/N ratio. Dissolved oxygen and multiple pollutants, including ammonium, carbon, phosphate, and sulf

Establishing simultaneous nitrification and denitrification under continuous aeration for the treatment of multi-electrolytes saline wastewater.

Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) was established under continuous aeration (6 mgO2 L-1) aiming at achieving a feasible and simple operational strategy for treating multi-electrolyte saline wastewaters. Two Structured Fixed-Bed Reactors (SFBR) were used to assess SND performance with (Saline Reactor, SR) and without (Control Reactor, CR) salinity interference. Salinity was gradually increased (from 1.7 to 9 atm) based on the composition of water supplied in arid regions of Brazil. At 1.7 atm, N-NH4+ oxidation and Total Nitrogen (TN) removal efficiencies of 95.9 ± 2.8 and 65.

Inhibitory effect of cyanide on nitrification process and its eliminating method in a suspended activated sludge process.

Inhibition of nitrification by four typical pollutants (acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, acetonitrile and cyanide) in acrylonitrile wastewater was investigated. The inhibitory effect of cyanide on nitrification was strongest, with a 50% inhibitory concentration of 0.218 mg·gVSS-1 being observed in a municipal activated sludge system. However, the performance of nitrification was recovered when cyanide was completely degraded. The nitrification, which had been inhibited by 4.17 mg·gVSS-1 of free cyanide for 24 h, was recovered to greater than 95% of that without cyanide after 10 days of recovery. T

A DO- and pH-based early warning system of nitrification inhibition for biological nitrogen removal processes.

In Korea, more than 80% of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with capacities of 500 m3·d-1 or more are capable of removing nitrogen from wastewater through biological nitrification and denitrification processes. Normally, these biological processes show excellent performance, but if a toxic chemical is present in the influent to a WWTP, the biological processes (especially, the nitrification process) may be affected and fail to function normally; nitrifying bacteria are known very vulnerable to toxic substances. Then, the toxic compound as well as the nitrogen in wastewater may be

Light-driven community assembly and functional performance of aeration-free filamentous algae-partial nitrification/anammox granule.

The algae-partial nitrification/anammox (A-PNA) process offers significant advantages for carbon-neutral wastewater nitrogen removal. This study successfully established a zero-aeration filamentous algal-PNA (FA-PNA) granular system by incorporating Pantanalinema sp. under stepwise increasing light intensities (0, 15, 60 and 90 μmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹). Increasing light intensity promoted the enrichment of extracellular polymeric substances and filamentous algae, facilitating granular growth and achieving a nitrogen removal rate of 85 mg N·(L·d)⁻¹. Quorum-sensing signaling molecules concentration increas

Iron-carbon micro-electrolysis coupled to heterotrophic nitrification aerobic denitrification treating low carbon/nitrogen mariculture wastewater.

Considering the unsatisfied nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) treatment performance of mariculture wastewater caused by low carbon/nitrogen (C/N), a novel iron-carbon (Fe-C) micro-electrolysis coupled to heterotrophic nitrification aerobic denitrification (HNAD) process was proposed to enhance the N and P elimination. Results revealed that total nitrogen (TN) removal and total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies in Fe-C filter with HNAD (R-Fe) increased by 76.1% and 113.3% compared to filter packed with ceramsite (R-C). Fe-C micro-electrolysis reaction led to the decrease of microbial diversity

Nitrification rate in dairy cattle urine patches can be inhibited by changing soil bioavailable Cu concentration.

Ammonia oxidation to hydroxylamine is catalyzed by the ammonia monooxygenase enzyme and copper (Cu) is a key element for this process. We investigated the effect of soil bioavailable Cu changes induced through the application of Cu-complexing compounds on nitrification rate, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) amoA gene abundance, and mineral nitrogen (N) leaching in urine patches using the Manawatu Recent soil. Further, evaluated the combination of organic compound calcium lignosulphonate (LS) with a growth stimulant Gibberellic acid (GA). Treatments were applied in May 2021 as

Inhibitory effect of cyanide on wastewater nitrification determined using SOUR and RNA-based gene-specific assays.

UNLABELLED: The effect of cyanide (CN(-) ) on nitrification was examined with samples from nitrifying bacterial enrichments using two different approaches: by measuring substrate (ammonia) specific oxygen uptake rates (SOUR), and by using RT-qPCR to quantify the transcripts of functional genes involved in nitrification. The nitrifying bioreactor was operated as a continuous reactor with a 24 h hydraulic retention time. The samples were exposed in batch vessels to cyanide for a period of 12 h. The concentrations of CN(-) used in the batch assays were 0·03, 0·06, 0·1 and 1·0 mg l(-1) . There was

Coupling mixotrophic denitrification and electroactive anodic nitrification by nitrate addition for promoting current generation and nitrogen removal.

Nitrate promotes anodic denitrification and fasts organic matter removal in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). However, it suffers from poor total nitrogen (TN) removal and current recovery. In this study, some novel electroactive nitrifying/denitrifying bacteria (ENDB) were introduced in a single chambered air-cathode MFC to investigate the performance of this device and the microbial community shift by adding nitrate. Results showed a similar disturbance in current output by adding nitrate during a short-term operation. However, a stable and reproducible current increase was achieved in the contin

Quorum Quenching of Nitrobacter winogradskyi Suggests that Quorum Sensing Regulates Fluxes of Nitrogen Oxide(s) during Nitrification.

UNLABELLED: Quorum sensing (QS) is a widespread process in bacteria used to coordinate gene expression with cell density, diffusion dynamics, and spatial distribution through the production of diffusible chemical signals. To date, most studies on QS have focused on model bacteria that are amenable to genetic manipulation and capable of high growth rates, but many environmentally important bacteria have been overlooked. For example, representatives of proteobacteria that participate in nitrification, the aerobic oxidation of ammonia to nitrate via nitrite, produce QS signals called acyl-homoser

Nitritation versus full nitrification of ammonium-rich wastewater: comparison in terms of nitrous and nitric oxides emissions.

The processes of nitritation and full nitrification of synthetic reject wastewater were compared in terms of N2O and NO emissions. Two lab-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBR1 and SBR2) were enriched with Nitrosomonas (ammonia-oxidizing bacteria) and Nitrobacter (nitrite-oxidizing bacteria), as shown by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and high-resolution 16S rRNA tag pyrosequencing. Stable conversion of ammonium to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate was achieved in SBR1 and SBR2 respectively. Biomass from SBR2 was added in SBR1 in order to achieve full nitrification. Under nitritation,

Enhancement of cold-adapted heterotrophic nitrification and denitrification in Pseudomonas sp. NY1 by cupric ions: Performance and mechanism.

Cupric ions can restrain biological nitrogen removal processes, which comprise nitrite reductase and nitric oxide reductase. Here, Pseudomonas sp. NY1 can efficiently perform heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification with cupric ions at 15 °C. At optimal culturing conditions, low cupric ion levels accelerated nitrogen degradation, and ammonium and nitrite removal efficiencies increased by 2.33%-4.85% and 6.76%-12.30%, respectively. Moreover, the maximum elimination rates for ammonium and nitrite increased from 9.48 to 10.26 mg/L/h and 6.20 to 6.80 mg/L/h upon adding 0.05 mg/L cup

Acidification and nitrification inhibition of manure alters greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen cycling in diverse agricultural soils.

Manure amendments are widely used in agriculture to enhance crop productivity and maintain soil organic matter, but they also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and reactive nitrogen (N) losses. Manure acidification and nitrification inhibitors (NIs) have been proposed as mitigation strategies, but their effectiveness likely varies with soil characteristics. To evaluate the influence of acidified and NI-treated manure on N cycling across different soil types, we conducted a 28-day laboratory incubation using soils collected from major agricultural regions in Wisconsin. We measured emission

Development of a defined three-strain nitrifying microbial community for ammonification and nitrification under organic nitrogen conditions.

A simplified synthetic nitrifying microbial community capable of sequential ammonification and nitrification under organic conditions was constructed using three defined strains: Bacillus badius NBRC 15713, Nitrosomonas europaea NBRC 14298, and Nitrobacter winogradskyi NBRC 14297. This co-culture achieved complete ammonification and nitrification under selected organic nitrogen conditions, with NO₃⁻-N accumulation of approximately 56 mg-N/L and no residual NO₂⁻-N detected. RT-qPCR analysis showed that changes in the relative abundance of N. europaea and N. winogradskyi were associated with cha

Elevated δ15N Linked to Inhibited Nitrification Coupled to Ammonia Volatilization in Sediments of Shallow Alkaline-Hypersaline Lakes.

Alkaline lakes are among the most bioproductive aquatic ecosystems on Earth. The factors that ultimately limit productivity in these systems can vary, but nitrogen (N) cycling in particular has been shown to be adversely affected by high salinity, evidently due to the inhibition of nitrifying bacteria (i.e., those that convert ammonic species to nitrogen oxides). The coastal plain of Coorong National Park in South Australia, which hosts several alkaline lakes along 130 km of coastline, provides an ideal natural laboratory for examining how fine-scale differences in the geochemistry of such env

Short exposure to oxygen and sulfide alter nitrification, denitrification, and DNRA activity in seasonally hypoxic estuarine sediments.

Increased organic loading to sediments from eutrophication often results in hypoxia, reduced nitrification and increased production of hydrogen sulfide, altering the balance between nitrogen removal and retention. We examined the effect of short-term exposure to various oxygen and sulfide concentrations on sediment nitrification, denitrification and DNRA from a chronically hypoxic basin in Roskilde Fjord, Denmark. Surprisingly, nitrification rates were highest in the hypoxic and anoxic treatments (about 5 μmol cm-3 d-1) and the high sulfide treatment was not significantly different than the ox

Empirical evidence reveals seasonally dependent reduction in nitrification in coastal sediments subjected to near future ocean acidification.

Research so far has provided little evidence that benthic biogeochemical cycling is affected by ocean acidification under realistic climate change scenarios. We measured nutrient exchange and sediment community oxygen consumption (SCOC) rates to estimate nitrification in natural coastal permeable and fine sandy sediments under pre-phytoplankton bloom and bloom conditions. Ocean acidification, as mimicked in the laboratory by a realistic pH decrease of 0.3, significantly reduced SCOC on average by 60% and benthic nitrification rates on average by 94% in both sediment types in February (pre-bloo

Integration of a nitrification bioreactor and an anoxic biotrickling filter for simultaneous ammonium-rich water treatment and biogas desulfurization.

A preliminary assessment has been carried out on the integration of an anoxic biotrickling filter and a nitrification bioreactor for the simultaneous treatment of ammonium-rich water and H2S contained in a biogas stream. The nutrient consumption in the biotrickling filter was as follows (mol-1 NO3--N): 6.3·10-4 ± 1.2·10-4 mol PO43--P, 0.04 ± 0.05 mol NH4+-N and 0.04 ± 0.03 mol K+-K. Furthermore, it was possible to supply a mixture of biogenic NO3- and NO2- into the biotrickling filter from the nitrification bioreactor to obtain a maximum elimination capacity of 152 gH2S-S m-3 h-1.
