Nocardia brasiliensis, the second most frequently isolated aerobic actinomycete in the clinical laboratory, is usually associated with localized cutaneous infections. Different vaccination procedures to increase the mechanisms of host resistance to Nocardia brasiliensis were studied in mice. A total of 116 cows from 4 dairy herds in California were used to determine the sensitivity and specificity of extracellular antigen of Nocardia astero des for possible detection of bovine mastitis caused by N asteroides and N caviae. Three different positive criteria were used. These criteria gave different sensitivity and specificity to the skin test. Nocardia spp. are pathogens commonly found in soil worldwide, and they cause mostly opportunistic infections in humans and animals, complicating both immunodepressive states and primary diseases. Nocardiosis is difficult to proper microbiological and clinical diagnosis because of its non-specific symptoms, which manifest as the cutaneous and sub-cutaneous infections, lung symptoms and the dissemination through the bloodstream to other organs. General characteristics of Nocardia, human nocardiosis as well as the microbiological diagnostics routine and treatment are discussed.

We report the case of a 61-year-old female with ulcerative colitis on therapy with prednisone and azathioprine. The patient presented with fever, dry cough, a swollen lower extremity, and nodules on the right wrist and the scalp. Computed tomography scans of the head, chest, abdomen, and pelvis revealed multiple lesions. Aspirates and biopsies of the lower extremity cystic lesion, the wrist nodule, and the scalp nodule all grew out Nocardia nova. The patient was treated with high-dose trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole therapy for one year and made a complete recovery.

Infection of a self-sealing tunnel incision is a rare but vision-threatening complication of cataract surgery. We describe two cases of side port infection following an uneventful phacoemulsification. Nocardia was isolated in one case. Both the cases were worsening on medical treatment and were successfully treated by therapeutic keratoplasty.

Chemotaxonomic and 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses of an isolate from the bronchial secretions of a patient with chronic bronchitis demonstrated clearly that it belongs to the genus Nocardia. The 16S rRNA gene sequence data, as well as the biochemical characteristics of the isolate, indicated that it belongs to a new species that differs from previously described members of the genus Nocardia. The name Nocardia cyriacigeorgici sp. nov. is proposed for this isolate, and is represented by strain IMMIB D-1627T (= DSM 44484T).

DNA-DNA hybridization data, as well as the biochemical characteristics of the isolate, indicate that it belongs to a new species that differs from previously described members of the genus Nocardia. The name Nocardia paucivorans sp. nov. is proposed for this isolate and is represented by strain IMMIB D-1632T (= DSM 44386T).
