OBJECTIVE: To determine effects on blood clotting of two modern low-dose monophasic oral contraceptives.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We measured in vivo markers of intravascular coagulatory and fibrinolytic activity in 40 volunteers randomly assigned to one of two low-dose oral contraceptives (OCs) for 6 months; one contained 35 micrograms of ethinyl estradiol (EE) plus 250 micrograms of norgestimate and the other, 30 micrograms of EE plus 75 micrograms of gestodene.

This review details the characteristic features of three new progestogens which soon will be available in low-dose combination oral contraceptive agents in the United States. Available data suggest that desogestrel, gestodene, and norgestimate are extremely potent progestogens with few androgenic side effects. The smaller changes in lipids induced by these progestogens seem to confer some advantage to the use of preparations containing one of these agents. Whether this advantage is also present clinically remains to be determined.

Some available oral contraceptive agents are unsuitable for the treatment of hirsutism since, although they suppress endogenous gonadotrophins and so ovarian androgen production, they contain a progestogen which is itself androgenic. Conventional poisoning potentially reduces the population densities of rodents, however, they may increase the ectoparasite loads on the surviving hosts. Tibolone has been widely accepted as remedy for vasomotor symptoms and for prevention of bone loss.
