Circulating Antioxidant Nutrients and Brain Age in Midlife Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Due to population aging, the increasing prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias are major public health concerns. Dietary consumption of antioxidant nutrients, in particular the carotenoid β-carotene, has been associated with less age-related neurocognitive decline. What is unclear, however, is the extent to which antioxidant nutrients may exert neuroprotective effects through their influence on established indicators of age-related changes in brain tissue. This study thus tested associations of circulating β-carotene and other nutrients with a structural neuroi…

Nutrients activate distinct patterns of small-intestinal enteric neurons.

The ability to detect and respond appropriately to ingested nutrients is essential for an organism's survival and to ensure its metabolic demands are met. Nutrient signals from the gut lumen trigger local intestinal reflexes in the enteric nervous system (ENS) to facilitate digestion and absorption1-4, but the precise cellular pathways that are involved in the initial neuronal sensory process remain unclear. The extent to which the ENS is capable of discerning different luminal chemicals is also unknown. Here we use calcium imaging to identify specific enteric pathways that are activated in re…

Valorisation of anaerobic digestate to nutrients and humic substances.

Nutrient-rich product fractions were produced from abundant, yet currently chemically under-utilized nutrients-containing feedstock, residual digestate formed during anaerobic digestion (AD). The objective of this research was to experiment individually three sub-processes, i.e., precipitation of organic humic substances and phosphorus from the digestate reject water, liberation of reject water nitrogen as ammonia gas during the lime treatment and recovering it with membrane contactor (MC), and finally novel utilization of ammonia for leaching nitrogen-enriched organic substances from the dige…

Nutrients and rheumatoid arthritis: From the perspective of neutrophils.

Neutrophils are considered as core immune cells involve in the early stage of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and participate in the disease progression. The underlining mechanisms include the elevated chemotaxis and infiltration of neutrophils, the increase in the reactive oxygen species and the promotion of neutrophil extracellular traps formation. Accumulating studies demonstrated the important role of nutrients intake played in the initiation and progression of RA. This study summarized the effects of several macronutrients and micronutrients on regulating RA through the modulation of activated …

Immunomodulatory Role of Nutrients: How Can Pulmonary Dysfunctions Improve?

Nutrition is an important tool that can be used to modulate the immune response during infectious diseases. In addition, through diet, important substrates are acquired for the biosynthesis of regulatory molecules in the immune response, influencing the progression and treatment of chronic lung diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In this way, nutrition can promote lung health status. A range of nutrients, such as vitamins (A, C, D, and E), minerals (zinc, selenium, iron, and magnesium), flavonoids and fatty acids, play important roles in reducing the risk…

Compost supplementation with nutrients and microorganisms in composting process.

The composting is an aerobic, microorganism-mediated, solid-state fermentation process by which different organic materials are transformed into more stable compounds. The product obtained is the compost, which contributes to the improvement of physical, chemical and microbiological properties of the soil. However, the compost usage in agriculture is constrained because of its long-time action and reduced supply of nutrients to the crops. To enhance the content of nutrients assimilable by the plants in the compost, its supplementation with nutrients and inoculation with microorganisms have bee…

Gastric neuropeptide W is regulated by meal-related nutrients.

Neuropeptide W (NPW) is secreted from gastrin (G) cells in the stomach in response to food intake. The mechanisms underlying food intake-induced regulation of gastric NPW is largely unknown. We hypothesized that specific macronutrients were responsible for food-induced NPW secretion. We evaluated the acute effects of fat, carbohydrate and protein on plasma NPW concentrations in humans and mice. The effect of different nutrients on expression of NPW in the antral stomach was also determined in mice. Primary cell cultures of mouse gastric antral mucosal cells were used to investigate the signali…

Nutrients removal and recovery in bioelectrochemical systems: a review.

Nutrient removal and recovery has received less attention during the development of bioelectrochemical systems (BES) for energy efficient wastewater treatment, but it is a critical issue for sustainable wastewater treatment. Both nitrogen and phosphorus can be removed and/or recovered in a BES through involving biological processes such as nitrification and bioelectrochemical denitrification, the NH4(+)/NH3 couple affected by the electrolyte pH, or precipitating phosphorus compounds in the high-pH zone adjacent a cathode electrode. This paper has reviewed the nutrients removal and recovery in …

Can nutrients prevent or delay onset of Alzheimer's disease?

Age-related changes in nutritional status can play an important role in brain functioning. Specific nutrient deficiencies in the elderly, including omega-3 fatty acids, B-vitamins, and antioxidants among others, may exacerbate pathological processes in the brain. Consequently, the potential of nutritional intervention to prevent or delay cognitive impairment and the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a topic of growing scientific interest. This review summarizes epidemiological studies linking specific nutritional deficiencies to mild cognitive impairment (MCI), as well as completed an

One-carbon metabolism-related nutrients and prostate cancer survival.

BACKGROUND: Folate and other one-carbon metabolism nutrients may influence prostate cancer pathogenesis. Prior studies of these nutrients in relation to prostate cancer incidence have been inconclusive, and none have explored prostate cancer survival. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to assess whether dietary intakes of folate, riboflavin, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12, and methionine measured around the time of prostate cancer diagnosis are associated with prostate cancer survival. DESIGN: This population-based prospective study comprised 525 men from Orebro, Sweden, who received a diagnosis of inc…

Impact of inorganic nutrients on maintenance of genomic stability.

Maintenance of genome stability is of fundamental importance for counteracting carcinogenesis. Many human genome instability syndromes exhibit a predisposition to cancer. An increasing body of epidemiological evidence has suggested a link between nutrient status and risk of cancer. Like other chemicals, nutrients can be toxic when consumed in excess. It has become clear that both nutritional deficiency and toxicity can compromise the integrity of the genome. This article focuses on roles of inorganic trace nutrients, including selenium, copper, zinc, and iron, in the redox regulation of genome…

Removal of nutrients in various types of constructed wetlands.

The processes that affect removal and retention of nitrogen during wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs) are manifold and include NH(3) volatilization, nitrification, denitrification, nitrogen fixation, plant and microbial uptake, mineralization (ammonification), nitrate reduction to ammonium (nitrate-ammonification), anaerobic ammonia oxidation (ANAMMOX), fragmentation, sorption, desorption, burial, and leaching. However, only few processes ultimately remove total nitrogen from the wastewater while most processes just convert nitrogen to its various forms. Removal of total nitrog

Luminal nutrients exacerbate intestinal hypoxia in the hypoperfused jejunum.

BACKGROUND: Provision of enteral nutrients shortly after traumatic injury has become the preferred method of nutrition support provided to patients. However, traumatic shock results in splanchnic hypoperfusion, which may cause persistent intestinal hypoxia. This study tested the hypothesis that delivery of enteral nutrients to the hypoperfused jejunum increases oxidative demand beyond that available, thereby exacerbating intestinal hypoxia. METHODS: Wistar-Furth rats (186+/-4 g; n = 24) were randomized to receive intestinal hypoxia (superior mesenteric artery occlusion) or serve as normoxic c…

Simultaneous and consecutive administration of nutrients in parenteral nutrition.

In seven patients, six with Crohn's disease and one with pancreatitis, two methods of parenteral nutrition were compared: the partial consecutive administration of the components of a parenteral nutrition regimen versus the administration of all nutrients simultaneously. With respect to the consecutive regimen, the simultaneous infusion regimen gave an improvement in the nitrogen balance of 13% and a decrease in urinary lactic acid of about 50%. Urinary excretion of alpha-amino nitrogen, glucose, and fructose was very small in both cases but was slightly lower during the simultaneous infusion …
