A case is presented of severe pregnancy-induced hypertension that was complicated by oliguria and managed with the aid of a pulmonary artery catheter. This case illustrates that urinary diagnostic indices may be unreliable in predicting the etiology of oliguria. Although urinary diagnostic tests are advocated routinely as reliable in the nonobstetric literature, possible misinterpretation of these values in severe pre-eclampsia with oliguria may require confirmation with hemodynamic data obtained from a pulmonary artery catheter.

A six-month old male infant with severe atopic dermatitis was admitted with hypoalbuminemia, oliguria and cyanosis of the extremities. There was marked edema and generalized eczema with foul, yellowish exudates. The patient's major clinical manifestations were attributed to the loss of albumin through the skin. Although atopic dermatitis is a common disease in children, here we want to show that systemic disturbances may arise from such condition, describe the total care given the patient, and emphasize the wholistic approach in managing cases of severe atopic dermatitis. Intensive treatment w…

Simultaneous administration of one dose of indomethacin (0.3 mg/kg, i.v.) and furosemide (1 mg/kg, i.v.) was given to 8 consecutive premature infants who had patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), and oliguria because of prerenal failure. Four infants responded with ductus closure and 2 infants showed improvement in echocardiogram and clinical distress. There was a significant increase in U/O, GFR, FENa and FECl following drug administration. This study suggests that simultaneous administration of indomethacin and furosemide can be safely used in infants with PDA and oliguria.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of intraoperative urine volume on postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) and the independent risk facto … f values [with the interval of 0.1 mL/(kg·h)] at maximum Youden index were used as cutoff values of oliguria. Then univariate analysis was used to explore the relationship between oliguria defined by these four cutoff values and the risk of AKI. And the cutoff value with maximum OR was chosen as the threshold of oliguria in this study. Lastly, the variable …

BACKGROUND: Oliguria is a sign of impaired kidney function and has been shown to be an early predictor of adverse prognoses in patients with acute kidney injury. The relationship between urine output (UOP) and early lactate levels in neonates with perinatal asphyxia (PA) has not been extensively explored. This study aimed to investigate the link between oliguria during the first 24 h of life and early lactate levels in neonates with PA.
METHODS: The medical records of 293 term neonates with asphyxia from 9216 hospitalized newborns were retrospectively analyzed, including 127 cases designated …

In many intensive care units, loop diuretics are used more or less routinely to achieve a urinary output above 1 ml/kg/h in critically ill patients. We do not in the literature find any basis of this strategy. In contrast, this practice may cause a risk of circulatory instability in the critically ill patient due to large diuresis and volume depletion. There is no evidence so far that the use of loop diuretics has a renal protective effect or any other beneficial impact on the renal function. The use of loop diuretics in oliguric critically ill patients may be harmful. Consequently an individu

A 70-year-old man with clinically localised prostate carcinoma underwent extraperitoneal endoscopic radical prostatectomy. His medical history revealed hypertension, renal colic, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and recurrent deep venous thrombosis in the legs. The operation was uneventful with 500 ml blood loss and no periods ofhypotension. The patient developed oliguria within 12 h after surgery. A hypovolemic state was initially suggested to explain the oliguria and increasing amounts of intravenous fluids were administered. The oliguria persisted, however, and the patient did not respond to a…

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an inflammatory clinical entity with many extraintestinal symptoms, including urinary tract manifestatio … al orifices. The literature data on UC in the pediatric population are scarce. Sudden deteriorating oliguria in an UC patient may result from secondary obstructive uropathy. Immediate diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent acute kidney injury.

Central diabetes insipidus may present as oliguric acute kidney injury (AKI), particularly in patients with communication difficulties. While polyuria is common in AKI recovery, persistent or unexplained hypernatremia should prompt suspicion for alternative diagnoses such as unmasked diabetes insipidus to ensure timely recognition and appropriate management.

In the course of a 19-d study of renal function in five ultramarathon runners, before, during and after a 90 km race, one runner developed transient oliguria with renal tubular dysfunction and anuria during and immediately after the race. Other features of the renal failure were an 84-fold increase in urine beta 2-microglobulin excretion (from 0.19 to 16.0 micrograms.min-1) and a much smaller increase in urine total protein excretion (from 0.07 to 0.18 mg.min-1) during the post-race period. Post-race creatinine clearance remained below pre-race levels throughout the study, varying between 42.8…
