Xanthogranulomatous salpingitis and oophoritis: a case report and review of the literature.

A case of xanthogranulomatous salpingitis and oophoritis in a 47-year-old woman is presented. Xanthogranulomatous inflammation is an uncommon form of chronic inflammation that is destructive to affected organs; it is characterized by the presence of lipid-filled macrophages with admixed lymphocytes, plasma cells, and neutrophils. Only a few cases of xanthogranulomatous salpingitis and oophoritis have been reported to date. The case presented here is associated with Escherichia coli infection, endometriosis, and an intrauterine device.

Challenges in diagnosis and management of xanthogranulomatous salpingo-oophoritis: A rare case.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Xanthogranulomatous inflammation of the female genital tract is a rare condition involving ovarian tubes charac … was deferred. Histopathological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of xanthogranulomatosis salpingo-oophoritis. CONCLUSION: This case underscores the importance of considering rare inflammatory conditions in the differential diagnosis of pelvic masses. It highlights the challenges in management, including the risk of extensive surgeries leading to infertili …

Silent oophoritis due to cytomegalovirus in a patient with advanced HIV disease.

A case of isolated necrotizing cytomegalovirus (CMV) oophoritis disclosed only by necropsy studies in a patient with AIDS, is described. This unusual case report is discussed with a review of the literature dealing with CMV involvement of genital organs in the immunocompromised host, and in patients with HIV infection and AIDS.

[Mycobacterial antigens and antitubercular antibodies in patients with tuberculosis salpingo-oophoritis].

Sixty two and 59 patients with tuberculous and nontuberculous salpingo-oophoritis, respectively, and 30 healthy females were examined. It was found that indirect solid-phase enzyme immunoassay (EIA) using ultrasonography of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv could detect antituberculosis antibodies in 66.7% of patients with tuberculous salpingo-oophoritis, and in 10% of healthy females. That using the antigen isolated from the cell wall extract of M. tuberculosis (whose molecular weight was 38 - 42 kD) could reveal them in 70.2, 4.3%, and 6.7%, respectively. After dissociation of immune complexe…

"Filarial dance sign" real-time ultrasound diagnosis of filarial oophoritis.

Filariasis is a parasitic disease caused by Filarial nematodes (Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori) that commonly causes lymphatic obstruction resulting in edema and increase in the size of the affected organ. Filariasis is diagnosed by identifying microfilariae on Giemsa stain. The immunochromatographic card test is diagnostic. Ultrasound is the imaging modality of choice for detecting adult filarial worms/microfilaria in the lymphatic system, which are responsible for the classic "filarial dance sign" caused by twirling movements of the microfilariae. © 2016 Wiley Periodi

In situ DNA hybridization study of 'primary' cytomegalovirus (CMV) oophoritis.

We report the case of a 50 year old woman with metastatic breast carcinoma refractory to chemotherapy who died of candidal septicemia after autologous bone marrow transplantation. Although there was no apparent active cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection (negative cultures and serology for active infection), autopsy revealed histologic evidence of CMV inclusions limited to both ovaries. DNA in situ hybridization was performed on multiple organs, and additional foci of infection in one fallopian tube and the adrenal glands were detected. Previous reports of isolated CMV oophoritis may represent samp…

Xanthogranulomatous Salpingo-Oophoritis as a Rare Presentation in Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.

Xanthogranulomatous salpingo-oophoritis is an infrequent and challenging inflammatory condition of the female genital tract. It involves the destruction of the fallopian tube and ovarian tissue by infiltrating inflammatory cells comprising lipid-laden macrophages, lymphocytes, plasma cells, and multinucleated giant cells. While more commonly found in other organs like the gallbladder and kidney, its occurrence in the female genital tract is rare. We present a case of xanthogranulomatous salpingo-oophoritis in a 45-year-old woman, shedding light on its diagnostic and clinical complexities. Nota…
