Optical fiber sensor based on oblique angle deposition.

The technique of oblique angle deposition has been extended to the fabrication of nanostructured metal coatings on the tips of standard silica optical fibers by thermal evaporation. The coatings are initiated as metal island films, which grow into extended rodlike structures as the deposition continues. The nanorod coatings demonstrate excellent surface-enhanced Raman scattering performance with variability of less than 10% as shown by direct measurements off the fiber tip with thiophenol as a test analyte. However, in the remote sensing configuration, the nanorod structures perform no better

[Monitoring of body temperature during fiber optics phototherapy].

Fiberoptic phototherapy is a new technique for treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia; in comparison with conventional phototherapy this new technique shouldn't increase body temperature during treatment. We have recorded body temperature of 13 term newborns with hyperbilirubinemia during 18 periods of treatment and compared the records with physiologic body temperature in the same babies. No increase over normal value during treatment nor significative difference during and after treatment has been observed.

Retinal damage produced by intraocular fiber optic light.

We exposed the maculas of owl monkey eyes to light from an intraocular fiber optic light source similar to that used for human pars plana vitrectomy. Retinal irradiance was calculated at 0.22 W/cm2. Eyes were exposed for time intervals ranging from 30 minutes to five minutes and were observed after light treatment by fundus photography and fluorescein angiography. Tissue was obtained for light and electron microscopy by animal killing at one hour, 24 hours, one week, and four weeks. Fundus lesions were seen ophthalmoscopically as early as five hours following 30 minutes of light exposure. Sign

Multimodal Fiber Somatosensory: Optical Fiber 'Nerves' Empower Continuum Surgical Robots With Multimodal Feedback.

To achieve the force sensing at the sub-5 mm end effector of a continuum robot, optical fiber 'nerves' -incorporating the Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavity and step-etched fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) was proposed to sense the multimodal forces (clamping force, 3-axis wrist force, and driving force) and shape awareness. The proposed laser-welded package solved the problem of clinical application adaptability, enabling the robot to withstand sterilization (15 cycles) and maintain an error of <5% over 60 days of operation. Combined with the in situ calibration method, the surgical robot can maintain high f

A Handheld Fiber-Optic Probe to Enable Optical Coherence Tomography of Oral Soft Tissue.

This study presents a highly miniaturized, handheld probe developed for rapid assessment of soft tissue using optical coherencetomography (OCT). OCT is a non-invasive optical technology capable of visualizing the sub-surface structural changes that occur in soft tissue disease such as oral lichen planus. However, usage of OCT in the oral cavity has been limited, as the requirements for high-quality optical scanning have often resulted in probes that are heavy, unwieldy and clinically impractical. In this paper, we present a novel probe that combines an all-fiber optical design with a light-wei

Imaging retinal nerve fiber bundles using optical coherence tomography with adaptive optics.

Early detection of axonal tissue loss in retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) is critical for effective treatment and management of diseases such as glaucoma. This study aims to evaluate the capability of ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence tomography with adaptive optics (UHR-AO-OCT) for imaging the RNFL axonal bundles (RNFBs) with 3×3×3μm(3) resolution in the eye. We used a research-grade UHR-AO-OCT system to acquire 3°×3° volumes in four normal subjects and one subject with an arcuate retinal nerve fiber layer defect (n=5; 29-62years). Cross section (B-scans) and en face (C-scan) slices extr

Flexible porphyrin doped polymer optical fibers for rapid and remote detection of trace DNT vapor.

With the rapid growth of anti-terrorist activities worldwide, it becomes an emerging requirement to rapidly and accurately detect hidden explosive threats. However, the safety issue during the explosive material detection, e.g. unexpected explosion, is still an insurmountable challenge. In this study, we design and mass-produce a novel kind of flexible 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin doped polymer optical fiber (PPOF) for rapid and accurate detection of trace 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT) vapor based on the DNT induced florescence quenching mechanism. Optical clearing reveals TNBS-induced morphological changes of VGLUT2-positive nerve fibers in mouse colorectum.

Colorectal hypersensitivity and sensitization of both mechanosensitive and mechanically insensitive afferents develop after intracolonic instillation of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS) in the mouse, a model of postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome. In mice in which ∼80% of extrinsic colorectal afferents were labeled genetically using the promotor for vesicular glutamate transporter type 2 (VGLUT2), we systematically quantified the morphology of VGLUT2-positive axons in mouse colorectum 7-28 days following intracolonic TNBS treatment. After removal, the colorectum was distended (20

Opto-fiber biosensor for tetrodotoxin detection using novel optical fiber structure functionalized with MoS2 and MWCNTs.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is one of the most potent neurotoxins, with complex structures and analgesic effects. This toxin exists mainly in aquatic organisms, such as pufferfish, and has high biological activity. In this study, a novel three-tapered opto-fiber biosensor based on the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon was developed for the detection of TTX at different concentrations. A combiner manufacturing system and advanced fusion splicer processing technologies were used to produce a novel and unique tapered structure. Optical Fiber Needle Probes for In Situ-Distributed Biosensing Based on Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry.

In situ detection is crucial for diagnosing lesions during surgery, endoscopy, or biopsy but has always been a challenge in medical diagnostics. Optical fiber biosensing needle probes, with their small size, can be nearly noninvasively guided to the lesion site for in situ detection. However, existing optical fiber biosensing probes are single-point sensors, unable to precisely locate lesions. We propose an optical fiber needle probe for in situ distributed sensing of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) biomarker GPC3 in soft matter based on optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR). The needle

Optical Detection of Ketoprofen by Its Electropolymerization on an Indium Tin Oxide-Coated Optical Fiber Probe.

In this work an application of optical fiber sensors for real-time optical monitoring of electrochemical deposition of ketoprofen during its anodic oxidation is discussed. The sensors were fabricated by reactive magnetron sputtering of indium tin oxide (ITO) on a 2.5 cm-long core of polymer-clad silica fibers. ITO tuned in optical properties and thickness allows for achieving a lossy-mode resonance (LMR) phenomenon and it can be simultaneously applied as an electrode in an electrochemical setup. The ITO-LMR electrode allows for optical monitoring of changes occurring at the electrode during el

Polymer Doping as a Novel Approach to Improve the Performance of Plasmonic Plastic Optical Fibers Sensors.

In this work, Fe2O3 was investigated as a doping agent for poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in order to enhance the plasmonic effect in sensors based on D-shaped plastic optical fibers (POFs). The doping procedure consists of immerging a premanufactured POF sensor chip in an iron (III) solution, avoiding repolymerization and its related disadvantages. After treatment, a sputtering process was used to deposit a gold nanofilm on the doped PMMA in order to obtain the surface plasmon resonance (SPR). More specifically, the doping procedure increases the refractive index of the POF's PMMA in contac

Arc-induced Long Period Gratings in standard and speciality optical fibers under mixed neutron-gamma irradiation.

In this paper, for the first time, the effects of mixed neutron and gamma flux on the spectral and sensing responses of Long Period Gratings (LPGs) are thoroughly analyzed. Six LPGs written by means of Electric Arc Discharge (EAD) technique in standard and speciality fibers, including radiation-hardened ones, were tested. The EAD technique was chosen because it enables the writing of gratings both in standard and not photosensitive fibers. The experiments have been carried out in a "TRIGA" pulsed nuclear reactor and the LPGs were irradiated by a gamma-ray dose-rate of 9 Gy/s and a mean 1.2∙101

Optical fiber sensor for wearable and accurate human respiratory monitoring.

Accurate respiratory monitoring is of great significance in assessing and analyzing physical health, and preventing respiratory diseases. The recently emerged wearable respiratory sensors are confronted with the challenges such as complex fabrication processes, limited accuracy, and stringent wearing requirements. An optical fiber sensor for accurate human respiratory monitoring is proposed and experimentally verified. The sensor head is composed of a piece of seven core fiber sandwiched between two single-mode fibers by two fiber bitapers, which is embedded in a textile sheet and freely worn

A handheld fiber-optic tissue sensing device for spine surgery.

The demographic shift has increased the demand for surgical interventions to address age-related degenerative diseases, such as spinal fusion. Accurate placement of pedicle screws, crucial for successful spinal fusion, varies widely with physician experience. Integrating tissue sensing into spine surgical instruments allows intraoperative examination of tissue properties, providing surgeons with additional information to prevent screw misplacement. This paper introduces a handheld fiber-optic tissue sensing device for real-time bone tissue differentiation during spine surgery using Diffuse Ref
