A biomechanical case study on the optimal orthodontic force on the maxillary canine tooth based on finite element analysis.

Excessive forces may cause root resorption and insufficient forces would introduce no effect in orthodontics. The objective of this study was to investigate the optimal orthodontic forces on a maxillary canine, using hydrostatic stress and logarithmic strain of the periodontal ligament (PDL) as indicators. Finite element models of a maxillary canine and surrounding tissues were developed. Distal translation/tipping forces, labial translation/tipping forces, and extrusion forces ranging from 0 to 300 g (100 g=0.98 N) were applied to the canine, as well as the force moment around the canine long

The unseen perils of oral-care products generated micro/nanoplastics on human health.

The extensive use of plastics in modern dentistry, including oral care products and dental materials, has raised significant concerns due to the increasing evidence of potential harm to human health and the environment caused by the unintentional release of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs). Particles from sources like toothpaste, toothbrushes, orthodontic implants, and denture materials are generated through mechanical friction, pH changes, and thermal fluctuations. These processes cause surface stress, weaken material integrity, and induce wear, posing health risks such as exposure

Construction of Zwitterionic Coatings with Lubricating and Antiadhesive Properties for Invisible Aligner Applications.

Invisible aligners have been widely used in orthodontic treatment but still present issues with plaque formation and oral mucosa abrasion, which can lead to complicated oral diseases. To address these issues, hydrophilic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (polySBMA) coatings with lubricating, antifouling, and antiadhesive properties have been developed on the aligner materials (i.e., polyethylene terephthalate glycol, PETG) via a simple and feasible glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-assisted coating strategy. Poly(GMA-co-SBMA) is grafted onto the aminated PETG surface via the ring-opening reaction of G

Retrospective Analysis of Different Bracket Systems used in the Treatment of Patients with Anterior Crowding: A Longitudinal Comparative Study.

INTRODUCTION: New design of brackets have been introduced in the field of orthodontics in the recent past, and one of such advancement is the self-ligating brackets. These brackets are said to have less friction, with a shorter period of treatment. Better patient acceptance and good treatment results are some of the other advantages offered by self-ligating brackets. Hence, we comparatively evaluated root resorption of anterior teeth by self-ligating and conventional preadjusted brackets in cases of severe anterior crowding in class I patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was car

A posttreatment evaluation of direct bonding in orthodontics.

A long-term evaluation was made of results achieved in direct bonding of metal attachments with a chemically polymerized composite material. A total of 705 attachments were bonded to different teeth, including premolars and molars, in forty-six children. Slim bracket bases, small quantities of adhesive paste, and trimming of the excess material were used to improve esthetics and to benefit in respect of gingival condition. The same person bonded all brackets and performed the orthodontic treatment by a friction-free edgewise light-wire technique. Mean treatment time was 17 months. The clinical

Effectiveness of Sliding Mechanics on a Hybrid Round-Rectangular Archwire for Maxillary Canine Retraction, Angulation Control, Root Resorption, Pain, and Patient Satisfaction in Adult Class II Division 1 Patients: A Preliminary Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Optimizing orthodontic tooth movement while minimizing complications remains a primary goal for both clinicians and patients. This preliminary study evaluated canine retraction using the sliding technique on a round cross-section archwire, employing a hybrid archwire designed to enhance movement efficiency while controlling canine angulation during retraction. This hybrid design combines a rectangular anterior segment for incisor control with a round posterior segment to reduce friction during canine retraction, differing from conventional single-section wires. A new removable connecting device for MARPE expander with non-common path of insertion.

OBJECTIVES: Maxillary transverse deficiency is a common malocclusion frequently observed in orthodontic clinics. Miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) not only produces greater skeletal expansion but also offers advantages such as simple miniscrew implantation without flap elevation, enhanced patient comfort, and an expanded age range and indications for palatal expansion. However, the fixed connection between the expander and the miniscrews makes the expander difficult to remove, significantly hindering its clinical application. This study aims to employ a non-common path of inse

Dental care for patients taking antiresorptive drugs: a literature review.

Antiresorptive drugs (ARDs), such as bisphosphonates or denosumab, that prevent bone resorption are widely used in patients with osteoporosis or with cancer that has metastasized to the bones. Although osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a well-documented complication of ARD use, the benefits ARDs outweigh the complication. Thus, research has focused on finding ways to prevent or reduce the risk of developing ONJ. Dentists, as part of a multi-professional team, have a critical role in preventing ONJ. However, many dentists tend to hesitate to provide dental care to patients with ONJ, or tend to

Osteonecrosis of the Jaw and Antiresorptive Agents in Benign and Malignant Diseases: A Critical Review Organized by the ECTS.

CONTEXT: Antiresorptive therapy significantly reduces fracture risk in patients with benign bone disease and skeletal-related events (SREs) in patients with bone metastases (BM). Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a rare but severe condition manifested as necrotic bone lesion or lesions of the jaws. ONJ has been linked to the use of potent antiresorptive agents, termed medication-related ONJ (MRONJ). OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify the differences various aspects of MRONJ among distinct patient categories and provide recommendations on how to mitigate the risk and optimally manage MRONJ in eac

Advanced 3D Magnetic Scaffolds for Tumor-Related Bone Defects.

The need for bone substitutes is a major challenge as the incidence of serious bone disorders is massively increasing, mainly attributed to modern world problems, such as obesity, aging of the global population, and cancer incidence. Bone cancer represents one of the most significant causes of bone defects, with reserved prognosis regarding the effectiveness of treatments and survival rate. Modern therapies, such as hyperthermia, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and magnetic therapy, seem to bring hope for cancer treatment in general, and bone cancer in particular. Mimicking the composition of
