[Prophylaxis of impacted canines: Prevention, diagnosis, and early management].

INTRODUCTION: Impacted canines represent a major orthodontic challenge due to their significant impact on dental occlusion, aesthetics, and masticatory function. Early diagnosis and preventive strategies are essential. This study explores the etiological factors, diagnostic tools, and early orthodontic interventions aimed at minimizing complications associated with impacted canines. METHODS: This review explores genetic and environmental etiological factors, current diagnostic techniques - including panoramic radiography and Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) - and interceptive strategies s

2 × 4 appliance in the mixed dentition stage: a scoping review of the evidence.

A great emphasis is currently given to the early correction of malocclusions to prevent further complications if left untreated. Interceptive orthodontics not only simplifies but also eliminates the need for later procedures. The 2 × 4 appliance is an orthodontic treatment modality applied during the mixed dentition period, particularly for malpositioned permanent upper incisors. This scoping review was aimed to examine the breadth and depth of the published literature on this clinical topic, as well as knowledge gaps, about this fixed appliance during mixed dentition, for the correction of in

Paediatric Orthodontics Part 1: Anterior open bite in the mixed dentition.

The correction of anterior open bite in the mixed dentition: treatment or over-treatment? Early treatment of the anterior open bite is a common, widespread treatment, which involves sometimes multiple clinical procedures: active orthodontic treatment and correction of the dysfunctional habits with a large waste of financial and biological costs. Therefore, also considering the significant possibility of self-improvement in the pre-pubertal phase, active early treatment should not aim to the active correction of the AOB, but only to other aspects of the malocclusion and to the interception of d

Need for interceptive intervention for malocclusion in handicapped children in Lagos, Nigeria.

Orthodontic care for handicapped children in Nigeria has generally been neglected. There is a need for baseline data for effective planning of orthodontic services for this population group. The purpose of this study was to determine the need for interceptive orthodontic intervention in handicapped children in Lagos, Nigeria. The sample consisted of 106 handicapped children, 60 boys and 46 girls who were 7-10 years old, selected from 5 special schools in Lagos. Overall, forty-nine (46.2%) of the children had a need for interceptive orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic intervention was needed in

Comprehensive Analytical Interceptive Approach to Manage Crowding in Mixed Dentition: A Case Report.

Dental crowding is among the most prevalent forms of orthodontic malocclusion, commonly observed during the mixed dentition period, with the mandibular anterior region being the most frequently affected. The management of crowding during the early to mid-mixed dentition period has been described using various terms, including space supervision, eruption guidance, pre-orthodontic guidance, and interceptive orthodontics. An analytical approach from extraoral to intraoral examination, along with a mixed dentition model analysis, is vital for effective space supervision, as it helps determine the

Epidemiology and aetiology of malocclusion among Syrian paediatric patients.

AIM: The knowledge of the distribution and causes of malocclusion in early childhood can prevent such malocclusions and their consequences and possibly to reduce complex orthodontic treatment. METHODS: All children (n = 234; 116 male, 118 female, age 2-16) who presented with occlusal or functional problems at the Department of Paediatric Dentistry at Damascus University (1995-1999) were classified according to the type and causes of malocclusion and the subsequent orthodontic treatment. RESULTS: 57.3% of the malocclusions affected the anterior-posterior plane, 12.4% the vertical, and 35.9% t

[Clear aligner technique in early treatment of malocclusion].

The application of clear aligner technique in the preventive and interceptive treatment of children with malocclusion is a new hot spot in orthodontics, which has an extensive application prospect. However, the main advantage of this technique is the ability of predictable tooth movements. Early treatment of malocclusion often involves many aspects, such as muscle function adjustment, orthopedic treatment, and dentition replacement monitoring, etc. Therefore, the indications should be strictly controlled to avoid abusing the technique. The digital treatment planning, clinical monitoring also s

Preventive orthodontic management of tooth transposition.

The contemporary orthodontics should highlight the periodical control of growth and dental development in order to intercept possible disorders in facial growth and tooth eruption. This may allow avoidance or simplification of corrective orthodontic treatment, making it faster and less aggressive. Tooth transposition, a genetically determined eruptive disturbance, presents a relatively low prevalence in the world population and primarily affects maxillary canines and premolars. This paper presents an option for interceptive treatment of bilateral transposition of maxillary canine and premolar

The effect of eruption guidance appliances on occlusal traits: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Early treatment of malocclusion in primary and early mixed dentition is often carried out by dentists under the supervision of orthodontists. In these treatments, simple appliances are preferred. OBJECTIVES: To analyse which occlusal traits can be corrected with prefabricated eruption guidance appliances (EGAs) in mixed dentitions. SEARCH METHODS: Articles written in English and published between January 1990 and March 2023 were searched from Cochrane Library, Clinicaltrials.gov, EMBASE, International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, LILAC, PubMed, and Scopus. [A review of the effectiveness and long-term stability of the functional appliance].

The orthopedic treatment of the orthodontics is a typical and crucial technique and method that uses functional appliances to fully work out the potentials of the jaws and muscles, and accordingly to correct the functional or mild skeletal malocclusions in pre-pubertal children and adolescents. A successful orthopedic treatment involves its short-time effectiveness and its long-term stability. For many years, however, the effectiveness of the functional appliance is controversial and the long-term stability of the functional appliance has always been overlooked. Thus, with an aim of presenting

Growth Modification of Developing Class II Division 1 Malocclusion Using Myofunctional Appliances.

Background and Overview. Interceptive orthodontics is a phase of orthodontics that identifies and corrects potential malocclusions in the growing dentofacial complex. At this point, myofunctional appliances are a necessary component. A 9-year-old girl appeared with a Class II division 1, a 6 mm overjet, a 6 mm overbite, a V-shaped maxillary arch, as well as lip hypertonicity, and an overdeveloped maxilla. Myobrace® combines the dental alignment abilities of rigid and soft appliances. Its structure replicates a fixed appliance: the soft outer part acts as the orthodontic wire, whereas the inner

[Relevance of Class II interceptive treatments. Synthesis of the valid conventional means of study].

The relevance of Class II interceptive therapy is controversial. The objective of this literature review was to note its indications and if a benefit is proven. We carried out a systematic search on PubMed from 1999 to 2019 by keywords on randomized trials. Fourteen articles were selected, mainly grade B or C. The criteria evaluated were dental, skeletal, psychological, aesthetic, as well as cost, duration, incisor fractures, rate of stroke, complexity and treatment need. Overjet is an important criterion for the indication of interceptive treatment, but it is not the only one. The skeletal cr

Posterior Open Bite Due to Failure of Maxillary Molar Eruption.

Posterior open bite can cause problems with occlusion. It arises from systemic or local factors such as physical or functional interference, ankylosis, and failure of eruption. Primary failure of eruption (PFE) is a rare condition that is difficult to differentiate from ankylosis and requires complex treatment strategies. Here we report a 12-year-old girl who was referred to our hospital by her dentist for re-evaluation of eruption failure of the left maxillary secondary premolar and first and second molars with congenitally missing maxillary lateral teeth. The maxillary first molar was extrac

Anterior openbites cause impaired masticatory, malfunction of tongue, speech defects, disuse atrophy of teeth and periodontal tissue, esthetic problem. It is corrected by some available orthodontic methods according to its etiologic factors and growth stage. Removable appliances with tongue crib, spring loaded occlusal bite block, M.E.A.W. with rubber elastics, vertical chin cap and high pull head gear are selected for its correction. Extraction is considered for preventing wedging effect and Adenoidectomy is performed as adenoid cause mouth breathing. In the case of treatment of anterior open
