Implant Removal Complications in Pediatric Orthopedics.

OBJECTIVE: Implant removal is a common practice in pediatric orthopedics, despite its risks. The present study aims to evaluate postoperative complications following implant removal in pediatric patients, correlating them with epidemiological factors. METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional study, conducted in a tertiary hospital, with analysis of medical records and imaging exams from February 2021 to June 2024. Medical records of patients under 18-years-old who were followed up until outpatient discharge were evaluated. The research included age, sex, type of implant, indication for insertio…

[Technical Orthopedics - Chronic Diabetic Foot Wounds].

Technical Orthopedics - Chronic Diabetic Foot Wounds Abstract: Chronic foot wounds are a very common and a growing problem. This review focuses on the treatment and the prophylaxis of diabetic foot ulcers from the perspective of technical orthopedics. Diabetic foot ulcers are of great importance for those affected, in particular because of the risk of infections and resulting amputations. With a good prophylaxis and consistent treatment, these complications can often be avoided.

Research progress of exosomes in orthopedics.

Exosomes are nano-extracellular vesicles secreted by a variety of cells. They are composed of a double-layer membrane that can transport a variety of proteins, coding and non-coding genes, and bioactive substances. Exosomes participate in information transmission between cells and regulate processes such as cell proliferation, migration, angiogenesis, and phenotypic transformation. They have broad prospects in the occurrence, development, and treatment of many diseases including orthopedics. Exosomes derived from different types of bone cells such as mesenchymal stem cells, osteoblasts, osteoc…

Dynamic Cleft Maxillary Orthopedics and Periosteoplasty.

In 1985 this cleft team, dissatisfied with the treatment and results from cleft lip and palate repair, began a longitudinal long-term study using dynamic maxillary orthopedics and periosteoplasty as was originally described by Drs Millard and Latham. All cases were carefully documented through adolescence, including clinical assessments, orthodontic, radiographic, and cephalometric analyses. In 1998, in this journal, we published our data on 35 complete unilateral and 10 complete bilateral cleft patients. At that time facial growth was following normal cephalometric patterns. Crossbites were d…

Redefining the Economics of Geriatric Orthopedics.

INTRODUCTION: The heath care system in the United States is in the midst of a transition, in large part to help accommodate an older and more medically complex population. Central to the current evolution is the reassessment of value based on the cost utility of a particular procedure compared to alternatives. The existing contribution of geriatric orthopedics to the societal burden of disease is substantial, and literature focusing on the economic value of treating elderly populations with musculoskeletal injuries is growing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature review of peer-reviewed public…

Wnt signaling and orthopedics, an overview.

Wnt signaling is a ubiquitous system for intercellular communication, with multiple functions during development and in homeostasis of the body. It comprises several ligands, receptors, and inhibitors. Some molecules, such as sclerostin, appear to have bone-specific functions, and can be targeted by potential drugs. Now, ongoing clinical trials are testing these drugs as treatments for osteoporosis. Animal studies have also suggested that these drugs can accelerate fracture healing and implant fixation. This brief overview focuses on currently available information on the effects of manipulati

Distraction osteogenesis: application to dentofacial orthopedics.

Distraction osteogenesis is a surgical-orthopedic method for lengthening bone by separating or distracting a fracture callus. This technique has a long history in limb lengthening and has recently been used to lengthen mandibles and maxillae in human patients. Distraction osteogenesis represents a powerful method of producing unlimited quantities of living bone which can be formed along any plane of space. Because this method uses local host tissue, it offers many advantages over bone grafting. In the author's experience, large (10-22 mm) antero-posterior and vertical corrections of mandibles

[Transplantation using allogeneic bone in orthopedics].

The reconstruction of large skeletal defects presents a challenging problem to the orthopaedic community. Currently bone graft surgery enjoys renewed interest because of the increased demand for bone grafts in limb salvaging bone tumour surgery and reconstructive surgery on failed arthroplasties. Two patients treated with an allograft are presented.

Radionuclide bone scintigraphy in pediatric orthopedics.

Radionuclide bone scintigraphy is highly sensitive and specific for diagnosing the musculoskeletal disorders of childhood. Conditions such as neonatal osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, diskitis of childhood, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, the osteochondroses, the "toddler's fracture," sports injuries, spondylolysis, myositis ossificians, and reflex sympathetic dystrophy are readily defined. High-quality state-of-the-art scintigraphy is essential in infants and young children.
