OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of 3 electrolyte solutions administered SC to experimentally dehydrated inland bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps).

A decrease in the osmolarity of incubation medium is accompanied by calcium influx in neuronal presynaptic endings. We studied the influence of Ca2+ on exocytosis induced by hypotonic shock using the hydrophilic fluorescent dye acridine orange and the hydrophobic fluorescent dye FM2-10. It was shown using acridine orange that lowering of osmolarity to 230 mOsm/l induces exocytosis both in calcium-containing and calcium-free medium. OBJECTIVE: To study the possible renal toxicity of longterm treatment with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID), in a population of patients with rheumatic diseases.
METHODS: Comparative study of 104 patients treated for more than 2 years with NSAID and 123 healthy controls, nonusers of these drugs. Diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) sampler with a polyquaternary ammonium salt (PQAS) aqueous solution as a binding phase and a dialysis membrane as a diffusive phase (PQAS DGT) was developed for the measurement of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) in water. Osmotic stress was applied to the perfused rat submandibular gland during steady-state fluid secretion. Alterations of perfusate osmolarity, by addition or withdrawal of sucrose or NaCl, caused transient changes in secretory rate during continuous stimulation with 1 microM acetylcholine (ACh). 56 patients at the age of 18-60 years with severe trauma were examined. Influence of the polyelectrolytic (Reamberin)solution on an acid-base state, osmolarity and electrolytic composition of plasma in the acute posttraumatic period was evaluated. It was found that patients, who was treated by isotonic sodium chloride solution and Ringer's solution, had metabolic acidosis and hyperchloremia. A 38-year-old physician developed polyuria and hypodipsia four days after the onset of an upper respiratory tract infection. Subsequent investigation showed a concentration defect with dehydration that partially corrected with vasopressin injection (Pitressin) administration compatible with partial central diabetes insipidus (DI). Blood osmolality is considered the gold standard hydration assessment, but has limited application for technical and invasive reasons. Paired antecubital-venous blood and fingertip-capillary blood were collected pre- and 30 min post-drinking 600 mL water in 55 male/female participants. No bias (0.2 mOsmo/kg, limits of agreement = -2.5 to 2.8 mOsmo/kg) was found between sampling methods, with high linear correlation (Spearman's r = 0.95, P < 0.001). Capillary blood sampling offers an accurate less-invasive method for determining serum osmolality than venous blood sampling.
