Development of a national osteopathic Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN): the NCOR Research Network.

This original research details the development of the UK's first osteopathic Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN), the NCOR Research Network, which represents a significant advancement in research capacity. This intellectually coherent framework provides essential baseline data on practitioners, their clinical activities, and patient demographics, with significant potential to influence professional development, education, and healthcare policy. Data were collected through a cross-sectional online survey study conducted between September 2023 and December 2023. The study included 570 osteopa

Assessing content validity of the Osteo-TAQ(Aus) using cognitive interviews: cross-jurisdictional evidence from UK osteopathic practice.

BACKGROUND: The Osteopaths' Therapeutic Approaches Questionnaire (Osteo-TAQ) has demonstrated content, construct, and face validity across multiple jurisdictions but required cognitive validation for use in the United Kingdom (UK). OBJECTIVES: To assess the cognitive content and face validity of the Australian-adapted Osteo-TAQ (Osteo-TAQ(Aus)) with practising UK osteopaths, and to determine whether any revisions were necessary. METHODS: Cognitive interviews were conducted with six (n = 6) UK osteopaths using a combination of think-aloud and verbal probing techniques, informed by the Cogniti

Attitudes, Beliefs, and Values of Italian Osteopaths Toward the Management of Patients With Tension-Type Headache: A Categorical Content Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Tension-type headache (TTH) is among the 20 leading causes of disability worldwide. Due to the difficulty in diagnosis and the variable association of other symptoms, the management of this clinical condition is often unsatisfactory. Osteopathic manipulative treatment combined with exercise, diet, and general relaxation therapies may be valid for TTH. This study investigated osteopaths' common attitudes, beliefs, and values when treating and managing individuals experiencing TTH. METHODS: This is a qualitative study using thematic analysis with elements of grounded theory. Osteopat

Prevalence and profile of New Zealand osteopaths treating people experiencing headaches and migraines.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the prevalence and profile of NZ osteopaths treating people experiencing headaches and migraines. This study is the first to describe this practice. BACKGROUND: Manual and manipulative therapy interventions are commonly sought by individuals experiencing headaches or migraines. Evidence supports the use of manual therapy as part of the management of headache and migraine disorders. Osteopaths are health professionals who provide care for individuals experiencing headaches and migraines. However, there is a lack of data concerning the profile of osteopaths treating thes

The Function of Osteopathic Medicine in the Treatment of Adhesive Capsulitis.

Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) may result from any injury to the shoulder. The main signs and symptoms are pain, decreased range of motion, and stiffness of the joint. A patient could have additional causes that can include muscle spasm, rotator cuff tear, or weakness of the upper extremities, which could make treatment decisions more complicated. Multiple therapeutic and surgical approaches exist. Successful outcomes for adhesive capsulitis are due to timely diagnosis and effective treatment options. In our case report, a 58-year-old female developed acute sharp pain in her shoulders,

Osteopathic manipulative treatment as a useful adjunctive tool for pneumonia.

Pneumonia, the inflammatory state of lung tissue primarily due to microbial infection, claimed 52,306 lives in the United States in 2007 (1) … are had an estimated mortality rate of 33%, compared to a 10% mortality rate in patients treated by osteopathic physicians (6). When applied to the management of pneumonia, manual manipulation techniques bolster lymphatic flow, respiratory function, and immunological defense by targeting anatomical structures involved in the these systems(7,8, 9, 10). The objective of t …

Learning disability documentation submitted by osteopathic medical students.

An increasing number of individuals are requesting disability accommodations on high-stakes licensing examinations, and neuropsychological evaluation reports are a frequent component of disability documentation. This study reviewed 103 requests for accommodations based on a learning disability (LD), submitted to the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners between 2013 and 2016 for accommodation on the licensure exams for osteopathic physicians. Depending on criteria employed, anywhere from 84 to 97% of applicants failed to meet recognized criteria for a LD diagnosis, with the vast majo…

Refractory torticollis after a fall.

Though multiple medical and psychiatric causes of torticollis have been described, cervical dystonias resulting from distant somatic dysfunctions have not. This article describes the treatment of a 62-year-old woman in whom refractory retrotorticollis of surmised pelvic etiology developed after a fall. Structurally, cervical dystonias have been addressed as problems that originate in the head and neck, but this limited view of the musculoskeletal component of torticollis may prevent physicians from directing osteopathic manipulative treatment to the underlying problem.

The role of osteopathic manipulative medicine in cerebral palsy: bridging treatment gaps and enhancing care.

Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is a hands-on approach utilized by physicians to diagnose, treat, and prevent various conditions through the application of muscle manipulation techniques. It has been applied in managing chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain, headaches, migraines, Parkinsonian gait, and psychological conditions such as stress, anxiety, and depression. In our narrative review, we aim to integrate both direct clinical studies of OMM in cerebral palsy (CP) and supportive literature on mechanisms and related conditions. A comprehensive literature search was conducted utilizing

Benign joint hypermobility syndrome: evaluation, diagnosis, and management.

Benign joint hypermobility syndrome (BJHS) is a connective tissue disorder with hypermobility in which musculoskeletal symptoms occur in the absence of systemic rheumatologic disease. Although BJHS has been well recognized in the rheumatology and orthopedic literature, it has not been discussed in the family medicine literature. Because most patients with musculoskeletal complaints are first seen by family physicians, it behooves primary care physicians to be familiar with recognizing and diagnosing BJHS. When patients with this syndrome are first seen by a physician, their chief complaint is

Investigating the efficacy of osteopathic manipulative treatment for intractable hiccups: a pilot study.

CONTEXT: Intractable hiccups is a rare medical condition defined as daily hiccups continuing for more than 30 days and is recognized by the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) and NIH Genetic and Rare Diseases (GARD) Information Center. Hiccups are spasmodic contractions of the respiratory muscles, triggered by activation of the hiccup reflex arc. Intractable hiccups can occur if this arc is chronically or aberrantly activated. The hiccup reflex arc has three components: (1) afferent pathways involving the phrenic, sympathetic, and vagal nerves; (2) central processing centers withi

[Complications of cervical spine manipulation. A case of "locked-in syndrome"].

The current craze for cervical spine manipulation is due to its rapid and even dramatic results and to the ineffectiveness of many treatments prescribed by physicians. Complications of thoracic or lumbar spine manipulation are very rarely reported, but this is not the case with the cervical spine. We present the case of a woman who suffered a severely disabling complication caused by an "osteopathic" manoeuvre. This technique should be rejected as it is dangerous and as harmless methods can be used with good results in common cervicalgia, even if it is very severe.

How do Australian osteopaths manage migraines? Outcomes from a national practice-based research network.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who experience migraines often seek out a variety of treatment options including manual or physical therapy. Evidence suggests that manual therapy, including osteopathy, can play a role in the management of migraines. Whilst there is some literature on the role osteopathy therapy plays in migraine management, none describes the treatment approaches used by practitioners. OBJECTIVES: To explore the demographic, practice and clinical management characteristics of Australian osteopaths who report treating migraine 'often' in clinical practice. METHODS: Secondary analysis

Protecting the public: state medical board licensure policies for active and inactive physicians.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to explore state physician licensing board policies and regulation of active, inactive, and retired licenses. METHODS: We conducted structured telephone interviews from January to March 2007 with representatives of all 64 state allopathic and osteopathic medical licensing boards in the United States. All of the licensing boards participated. RESULTS: Only 34% of state licensing boards query physicians regarding clinical activity at both initial licensure and renewal. The majority of boards allow physicians to hold or renew an unrestricted active li

Hemiplegic Syndrome After Chopstick Penetration Injury in the Lateral Soft Palate of a Young Child.

Soft palate penetrating injuries have been reported among children, particularly in children falling with objects in their mouth. The authors present a case of a healthy 14-month-old child who fell onto a blunt-ended chopstick, the subsequent cerebrovascular accident, and the role of the osteopathic tenets thereafter. The child had an acute infarction to the region of his right middle cerebral artery secondary to right internal carotid artery occlusion. Physicians should consider the neurologic sequelae of lateral soft palate injuries and damage to the surrounding anatomical structures. A thor

Therapeutic Hypothermia to Treat a Newborn With Perinatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is caused by neonatal asphyxia and can lead to mortality or long-term neurodevelopmental morbidity in neonates. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is one of the few effective ways to manage mitigating neurologic sequelae. The authors describe the case of a neonate who had a perinatal hypoxic insult and sustained no long-term sequelae after being treated with TH. It is important that osteopathic physicians who provide obstetric and gynecologic, perinatal, and emergency medical care are able to recognize a perinatal hypoxic event, understand the stratification of hypoxi…
