Automatic Prediction of Conductive Hearing Loss Using Video Pneumatic Otoscopy and Deep Learning Algorithm.

OBJECTIVES: Diseases of the middle ear can interfere with normal sound transmission, which results in conductive hearing loss. Since video pneumatic otoscopy (VPO) findings reveal not only the presence of middle ear effusions but also dynamic movements of the tympanic membrane and part of the ossicles, analyzing VPO images was expected to be useful in predicting the presence of middle ear transmission problems. Using a convolutional neural network (CNN), a deep neural network implementing computer vision, this preliminary study aimed to create a deep learning model that detects the presence of

A cross-sectional evaluation of the validity of a smartphone otoscopy device in screening for ear disease in Nepal.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss is a neglected international health problem. The greatest burden of ear disease is in low-income countries where there is also a lack of resources. In this context, screening for otological disease may be worthwhile. Cupris© has developed an otoscopy device that offers the possibility of low-cost mass screening in remote communities. We evaluated the validity of this device in diagnosing ear disease and in determining whether referral to an ENT centre is warranted. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Outpatient clinic, Nepal. PARTICIPANTS: All adults and childre

The effect and acceptability of tympanometry and pneumatic otoscopy in general practitioner diagnosis and management of childhood ear disease.

BACKGROUND: Tympanometry and pneumatic otoscopy are recommended for diagnosis of otitis media, but are not frequently used by general practitioners (GPs). We examined how, after targeted short training, GP diagnosis and management of childhood ear disease was changed by the addition of these techniques to non-pneumatic otoscopy. We further explored factors influencing the uptake of these techniques. METHODS: Between 2011 and 2012, we used a crossover experimental design to determine associations between tympanometry and pneumatic otoscopy and the GP diagnosis and management of ear disease in

Phase-based Eulerian motion magnification reveals eardrum mobility from pneumatic otoscopy without sealing the ear canal.

Pneumatic otoscopy is the recommended diagnostic method for middle ear infections. Physicians use a pneumatic otoscope to assess the position of the eardrum (bulging or retraction) as well as the eardrum mobility while an insufflation bulb is squeezed to generate air pressure changes in a sealed ear canal. While pneumatic otoscopy provides increased sensitivity and specificity by detecting decreased eardrum mobility, there exist many challenges to correctly perform and interpret results. For example, the ear canal must be sealed using a specialized ear speculum to deliver sufficiently large pr

Superior canal dehiscence with tegmen defect revealed by otoscopy: Video clip demonstration of pulsatile tympanic membrane.

Superior canal dehiscence is a pathologic condition of the otic capsule acting as aberrant window of the inner ear. It results in reduction of inner ear impedance and in abnormal exposure of the labyrinthine neuroepithelium to the action of the surrounding structures. The sum of these phenomena leads to the onset of typical cochleo-vestibular symptoms and signs. Among them, pulsatile tinnitus has been attributed to a direct transmission of intracranial vascular activities to labyrinthine fluids. We present the first video-otoscopic documentation of spontaneous pulse-synchronous movements of th

Accuracy of Video Otoscopy in Predicting the Presence of Middle Ear Effusion in Children Compared to Tympanometry: A Diagnostic Study.

IMPORTANCE: Middle ear effusion (MEE) is the primary cause of conductive hearing impairment among children, predominantly occurring up to the age of two years. The gold standard for detecting MEE is tympanometry (Grayson-Stadler, Eden Prairie, Minnesota). This study explores a less costly alternative, the video otoscope (Inventis S.R.L, Padova, Italy). OBJECTIVE: The primary objective is to compare video otoscopy with tympanometry in terms of its ability to diagnose MEE. The secondary objective is to explore the prevalence of MEE in special populations. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective
