ENDEMIC INFECTION OF STRANDED SOUTHERN SEA OTTERS (ENHYDRA LUTRIS NEREIS) WITH NOVEL PARVOVIRUS, POLYOMAVIRUS, AND ADENOVIRUS.

Over the past century, the southern sea otter (SSO; Enhydra lutris nereis) population has been slowly recovering from near extinction due to overharvest. The SSO is a threatened subspecies under federal law and a fully protected species under California law, US. Through a multiagency collaborative program, stranded animals are rehabilitated and released, while deceased animals are necropsied and tissues are cryopreserved to facilitate scientific study. Here, we processed archival tissues to enrich particle-associated viral nucleic acids, which we randomly amplified and deeply sequenced to iden

Better sturdy or slender? Eurasian otter skull plasticity in response to feeding ecology.

Otters are semi-aquatic mammals specialized in feeding on aquatic prey. The Eurasian otter Lutra lutra is the most widely distributed otter species. Despite a low degree of genetic variation across its European range, the population from Great Britain exhibits distinct genetic structuring. We examined 43 skulls of adult Eurasian otters belonging to 18 sampling localities and three genetic clusters (Shetlands, Wales and Scotland). For each sample location, information regarding climate was described using bioclimatic variables from WorldClim, and information on otter diet was extracted from the…

Clinical leishmaniosis in a captive Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) in Spain: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Captive and free-ranging wild mammals have been recognized as potential reservoirs of Leishmania infantum infection. The aim of … the first report of clinical leishmaniosis in the Eurasian otter. Our results suggest that Eurasian otters are susceptible to infection with L. infantum and can develop clinical leishmaniosis in endemic areas.

Severe visceral pentastomiasis in an oriental small-clawed otter with functional thyroid carcinoma.

In January 2016, a 20-year-old female oriental small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus) from Night Safari in Singapore was euthanized and diagnosed with a thyroid gland carcinoma. Postmortem examination and histology also revealed metastasis to the regional lymph nodes and severe visceral pentastomiasis. Grossly, the lymph nodes were infested, and encapsulation was observed on the visceral serosal surface. Histopathologically, the lymph nodes were encysted by a thick fibrous connective capsule with minimal inflammatory response. Pentastomiasis has been previously reported in the smooth-coated otter

First report of a naturally patent infection with Dirofilaria immitis in an otter (Lutra lutra).

Dirofilaria immitis causes a severe and life-threatening cardio-pulmonary disease in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas; also, zoonotic … entified. Microfilariae were present in the uterus of one of the female heartworms, indicating that otters can act as reservoirs of dirofilariasis in the wild. This is the first report of a patent infection in a free-ranging otter.

Splenic marginal zone lymphoma in an Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinerea).

Severe splenomegaly was found during routine examination of a clinically normal 7-yr-old male Asian small clawed otter. The spleen and three enlarged splenic lymph nodes were immediately removed. The spleen weighed 310 g (approximately 8% of body weight). The spleen and resected lymph nodes were diffusely infiltrated by coalescing sheets of neoplastic lymphocytes that occasionally surrounded remnants of preexisting lymphoid follicles. Immunohistochemical confirmation of B lymphocyte origin and microscopic pattern were consistent with primary splenic marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) with metastasis

Levels of lead, cadmium and other elements in mink and otter from Ontario, Canada.

Concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cu, Ni, Fe, Zn, Mn, Ca, P, Mg and S were measured in tissues of mink (Mustela vision) and river otter (Lutra canadensis) from five areas of Ontario, Canada. Bone Pb levels in both species were lowest in animals from the collection site most remote from industrial activity and atmospheric deposition of pollutants. Mean liver and kidney Cd levels were also different between collection sites and may reflect natural and/or anthropogenic sources. Copper levels in liver, but not kidney, were elevated in mink and otter from the heavily Cu-contaminated Sudbury region. However

Exposure to domoic acid is an ecological driver of cardiac disease in southern sea otters✰.

Harmful algal blooms produce toxins that bioaccumulate in the food web and adversely affect humans, animals, and entire marine ecosystems. Blooms of the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia can produce domoic acid (DA), a toxin that most commonly causes neurological disease in endothermic animals, with cardiovascular effects that were first recognized in southern sea otters. Over the last 20 years, DA toxicosis has caused significant morbidity and mortality in marine mammals and seabirds along the west coast of the USA. Identifying DA exposure has been limited to toxin detection in biological fluids using …

Pathology and epidemiology of nasopulmonary acariasis (Halarachne sp.) in southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis).

Halarachne sp. nasal mites infest harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) and southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) in California, but little is known about the pathophysiology of these infestations, or risk factors for exposure. To investigate these questions, a retrospective case-control study was performed using necropsy data from 70 mite-infested sea otters, and 144 non-infested controls. Case records for sea otters examined by pathologists from February 1999 through May 2015 were examined to assess risk factors for infestation, and lesions associated with nasopulmonary acariasis. Animals with…

Mercury exposure and neurochemical biomarkers in multiple brain regions of Wisconsin river otters (Lontra canadensis).

River otters are fish-eating wildlife that bioaccumulate high levels of mercury (Hg). Mercury is a proven neurotoxicant to mammalian wildlife, but little is known about the underlying, sub-clinical effects. Here, the overall goal was to increase understanding of Hg's neurological risk to otters. First, Hg values across several brain regions and tissues were characterized. Second, in three brain regions with known sensitivity to Hg (brainstem, cerebellum, and occipital cortex), potential associations among Hg levels and neurochemical biomarkers [N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) and gamma-aminobu…

Dental and temporomandibular joint pathology of the North American river otter (Lontra canadensis).

Museum skull specimens from 165 North American river otters (Lontra canadensis) from Alaska, USA, were analysed systematically using an established protocol designed for examination of mammalian dentition. The study population was collected from 1956 to 2012 and comprised a similar proportion of males (n = 82, 49.7%) and females (n = 72, 43.6%). Eleven animals were of unknown sex. The study group incorporated a higher proportion of skeletally mature adults (n = 128, 78.5%) compared to young adults. As with many other mammalian species, the most common types of pathology in this species were pe…

Splenic T-cell lymphoma in a North American River Otter (Lontra canadensis).

BACKGROUND: Splenic lymphoma is commonly reported in domestic ferrets (Mustela putorious furo), but very rarely reported in wild Mustelidae species, including otters. One report described B-cell splenic lymphoma in an Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinerea) that metastasized and was the primary reasoning for humane euthanasia (Stedman and Mills, 2014). CASE DESCRIPTION: The current report describes a case of splenic T-cell lymphoma in a captive North American river otter (Lontra canadensis). The otter died several weeks after splenectomy and no evidence of metastasis was found on gross necro…

Biological and anthropogenic predictors of metal concentration in the Eurasian otter, a sentinel of freshwater ecosystems.

Toxic metals have been linked to a range of adverse health effects in freshwater organisms. However, for higher vertebrates, there is little understanding of the large-scale drivers of exposure. We quantified toxic metal/semi-metal concentrations in a sentinel freshwater top predator, the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra), across England and Wales, and determined how this varied with key natural and anthropogenic factors. We related liver concentrations in 278 otters that died between 2006 and 2017 to habitat biogeochemistry, proximity to point source contamination and to biological characteristics…

The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) as a potential host for rickettsial pathogens in southern Italy.

Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis and rickettsiosis are zoonotic tick-borne diseases of canids caused by the intracellular obligate bacteria Ehr … taly. Helminths included just cystacanths of Sphaerirostris spp. from the intestine of two Eurasian otters and the nematode Angiostrongylus vasorum from the lungs of a single Eurasian otter. None of the samples was positive for the other investigated selected pathogens. This study is the first report on the evidence of infection by rickettsial pathogens …

Late-life action tremor in a southern sea otter (enhydris lutris nereis).

Although tremor is highly prevalent in human beings, there are few reports of tremor occurring in other mammals. Such tremor can further our insight into the mechanisms and anatomical basis of human tremor disorders. We report on a southern sea otter with a slowly progressive 6.5 to 8.5 Hz action tremor of late life that shared several clinical characteristics with essential tremor. The main pathological finding was in the cerebellum, where there was extensive vacuolation of Purkinje cells.

Refractive state, ocular anatomy, and accommodative range of the sea otter (Enhydra lutris).

Sea otters are carnivorous, amphibious mammals that are active both above and under water. Accordingly, it might be expected that their eyes are adapted for both aerial and aqueous vision. We examined the anatomy and physiological optics of the sea otter eye with a view towards describing and explaining its amphibious visual characteristics. We employed photokeratoscopy to measure the refractive power of the sea otter cornea, which we found to be 59 D. Using video dynamic photorefraction, we found that sea otters can focus targets clearly both in air and water, relying on accommodation to comp…
