In a study of early abortions (less than 16-week pregnancies) no significant increase in fetomaternal haemorrhage was found in patients having either threatened or incomplete abortions. A statistically significant increase in fetal cells in the maternal circulation, however, occurred after curettage. The administration of oxytocic drugs in conjunction with curettage in cases of incomplete abortion did not increase the incidence of transplacental passage of fetal erythrocytes when compared with curettage alone. Recent claims that routine active management of the third stage of labour increases rather than decreases maternal and neonatal morbidity have prompted us to conduct a systematic review of the relevant controlled trials. In a prospective study of neonatal jaundice 739 infants, delivered vaginally, in the vertex presentation, and without major complications, were examined. Baskett, MD, reviewed the routine use of oxytocic drugs by Canadian obstetricians in the management of the third stage of labor. Serum oxytocic and oxytocinase activities were examined in 50 females with normal pregnancy and 50 with threatened abortion by using biological (oxytocin) and biochemical (oxytocinase) methods.
