[Primary malignant tumor of uvula: report of 3 cases and review of the literature].

We retrospectively analyzed 3 middle-aged male patients of primary malignant tumor of uvula. There was a long history of smoking and drinking for the patients. All of them came to the hospital with the syptoms of pharyngeal foreign body sensation and two of them had pharyngeal sore. The patients appeared well, new neoplasm at the apex of the uvula. Diameter of 2 cases were less than 1 cm without invading the midline of the soft palate. Another patient's diameter was more than 1 cm with invading the midline of the soft palate. Preoperative pathology diagnosis of 3 patients was squamous cell car

Plasmacytoid myoepithelioma of the palate: case report.

Myoepitheliomas are extremely rare benign neoplasms of salivary glands. They represent 1-1.5% of all salivary gland tumors. They occur, principally, in the parotid gland and infrequently in minor salivary glands. There are distinct histological and immunohistochemical characteristics of the tumor which aid in the diagnosis. Myoepithelioma of the palate is uncommon and only a limited number of cases has been reported in the English literature. Herein, a case of plasmacytoid type of myoepithelioma of the palate in an adult female is presented along with review of the literature.

Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Soft Palate: Case Report.

Background: Pleomorphic adenoma is the most prevalent benign tumor of the salivary glands. While it primarily affects the parotid gland, it can also arise from minor salivary glands in the soft palate. Presentation: A case of a 28-year-old female who presented with a painless, slowly enlarging mass on the soft palate was reported. CT revealed a well-circumscribed lesion measuring 2.5 × 2.0 cm. Complete surgical excision was performed, and histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma. Conclusion: Pleomorphic adenoma of the palate is an important entity to consider i

Basal cell adenoma of palatal glands.

Salivary gland neoplasms represent less than 3% of all tumors in the general population of which benign adenomas account for 65.5%. Basal cell adenoma which is classified as a subtype of monomorphic adenomas accounts for 1-2% of all salivary gland epithelial tumors, and more than 80% of them arise in the major salivary glands, mostly the parotid gland and has female predominance reporting mostly in the elderly age groups. We here report a case of basal cell adenoma of trabecular type in a male patient of age 45 years in the minor salivary glands of left posterior palatal region.

Nasopharyngeal teratoma associated with cleft palate in newborn: report of 2 cases.

Teratoma is a true neoplasm that consists of tissues from all 3 embryonic germ layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. Nasopharyngeal teratoma is very rare and accounts for only 2% of all teratomas. We present 2 cases of nasopharyngeal teratomas associated with cleft palate in newborns. The first case was a mushroom-like teratoma arising from the base of the sphenoid bone with cleft soft palate. This case was unique and interesting because no earlier paper has reported a teratoma with such a clinical feature. The second case was a teratoma from the nasal septum of an incomplete cleft palate.

Metastasising Pleomorphic Salivary Adenoma: A Rare Case Report of a Massive Untreated Minor Salivary Gland Pleomorphic Adenoma with Concurrent Ipsilateral Cervical Node Metastases.

Salivary gland tumours constitute approximately 1-5% of all human neoplasms. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the commonest benign neoplasm affecting the parotid gland most often (> 75%), followed by the submandibular gland (13%), then the palate (9%). Metastasising pleomorphic adenoma (MPA) is extremely rare. The effects can be severe and a reported 40% of MPA patients die with disease. This case represents the first known case in English literature of an untreated minor salivary gland PSA of the palate metastasising to an ipsilateral cervical node. We report a 61 year old female who presented wit

Myoepithelioma of the vallecula: a case report.

Myoepitheliomas are rare and generally benign neoplasms that account for fewer than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. A myoepithelioma neoplasm is almost entirely composed of myoepithelial cells and is most frequently located in the parotid gland and in the minor salivary glands of the hard palate. We report an extremely rare case of myoepithelioma of the vallecular region in a 65-year-old woman and describe this tumor's clinical peculiarity, diagnostic and therapeutic considerations, and prognosis.

Follicular lymphoma in the palate with clinical appearance similar to salivary gland tumors.

Intraoral presentation of follicular lymphoma is rare, and only three cases in the palate have been reported to date. The present case report describes an uncommon case of follicular lymphoma affecting the palate. The clinical aspect was similar to salivary gland neoplasm, and an incisional biopsy was important to establish the correct diagnosis and consequently to plan the treatment. Also discussed is the differential diagnosis among follicular lymphoma, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, and follicular lymphoid hyperplasia with regard to the histopathologic and immunohistochemical f

Necrotizing sialometaplasia of tongue.

Necrotizing sialometaplasia, is a benign inflammatory lesion primarily involving the minor salivary glands of the hard palate. The lesion often presents itself as a deep-seated palatal ulcer with clinical and histological features similar to those of a malignant neoplasm. Here we report a case of necrotizing sialometaplasia in a 40-year-old female, present on the lateral border of the tongue, mimicking squamous cell carcinoma, clinically. A correct diagnosis to avoid mutilant surgical treatments is essential, considering that it is a self-limiting disease.

Schwannoma of the hard palate.

Schwannomas are rare, benign neoplasms that can arise from any cranial, peripheral, or autonomic nerve that contains Schwann cells. Approximately 25% to 45% of all schwannomas occur in the head and neck. They occur most commonly in the eighth cranial nerve, but it has been reported that 20% to 58% arise in the oral cavity, with approximately 10% of these located on the hard palate. We report a case of schwannoma of the hard palate, present important pathologic considerations for diagnosis, and provide a review of the literature regarding extracranial schwannomas.

Malignant melanoma of the oral cavity--case reports and review of literature.

Melanoma is a malignant tumor of melanocytes or their precursor cells. It is the third most common skin cancer and is one of the most biologically unpredictable neoplasms. Sunlight is an important etiological factor in cutaneous melanoma. Oral melanoma is relatively uncommon, exhibiting a definite predilection for palate and maxillary gingiva, and is twice as common in males as in females. We herewith report three cases of oral melanoma out of which two occurred on the palate and one in the maxillary gingiva. Their clinical presentations, histopathology and management are discussed.

Role of p63 in Determining the Histogenesis of Low-Grade Neoplasms versus Cystic Lesion.

The biological nature of salivary gland neoplasms and the overlapping characteristics that result from the heterogeneity of the cells of origin make diagnosis difficult. Hence, we intend to present a case of low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) on the palate and to understand the importance of biomarker such as p63 in the early diagnosis of tumor as it also has a role in its histogenesis. A 53-year-old female reported with a unilateral swelling for 3 months on posterolateral palatal region of the right side. Clinical differentials for such palatal swellings include a varied spectrum of les

INTRODUCTION: A hamartoma is a benign tumor-like malformation, often taking the form of vascular malformation such as hemangiomas and lymphangiomas; hamartoma composed of other tissue types are much rarer in the oral cavity, exceptionally reported in the palate. We report herein a new case of palatal hamartoma. Our aim is to describe the epidemiological, clinico-pathologic and therapeutic features of this lesion. OBSERVATION: A 53-years-old woman had a painless mass located on the right hard palate, measuring 2×1.5 cm of diameter, the mass was elastic with a smooth surface. On imaging, this m

[Enucleation of a pleomorphic adenoma of the palate: a conservative choice].

The benign mixed tumor (pleomorphic adenoma) is the most common intraoral salivary gland tumor: more than 50% occurs on the hard and soft palate. The epidemiological data, histopathological and clinical features, preoperative diagnostic methodologies, treatment options, recurrence rates and prediction published in the literature for this neoplasm are discussed. A case of minor salivary gland tumor of the palate in a 26 year old man is reported. The therapy chosen was a surgical conservative enucleation of the lesion. Histological examination showed pleomorphic adenoma; there is no recurrence a

Salivary duct carcinoma of the palate.

Salivary duct carcinoma is a rare high-grade neoplasm that more frequently affects the parotid gland. Though neoplasms of this type are infrequent in minor salivary glands, they are less aggressive and may lead to early diagnosis before distant metastases could occur. Salivary duct carcinoma is also the most frequent epithelial component of carcinosarcoma. The present article reports a case of SDC of the palate in a 26-year-old male and discusses SDC as a malignant epithelial component in carcinosarcoma.

Sarcomatoid salivary duct carcinoma of the palate: a rare case report.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is an uncommon neoplasm that most commonly occurs in major salivary glands, mainly the parotid gland. SDC is rarely found in the minor salivary glands of the oral cavity. This report presents an extremely rare case of sarcomatoid SDC originating in a minor salivary gland of the palate. The tumor was histologically characterized by the presence of both carcinomatous and sarcomatoid components. The patient presented with a painless mass in the right palate, which slowly increased in size over 20 years. The clinical course of the present case suggests that the tumor

Oral rehabilitation after surgical removal of pleomorphic adenoma.

Although tumors of minor salivary glands are rare, the pleomorphic adenoma is the most common pathology among the benign neoplasm and can be found with high prevalence in the junction between hard palate and soft palate. The treatment of choice for most of maxillary tumors is surgical through either a total or partial maxillectomy. However, surgical defects caused by such type of treatment lead to both clinical and psychologic disorders for the patient. The immediate oral rehabilitation using interim palate obturator after maxillectomy provides optimization on the healing process, recovers the

Malignant myoepithelioma of palate.

Malignant myoepithelioma is a rare salivary gland neoplasm, which accounts for less than 2% of all the salivary gland carcinomas. Majority of cases have been reported in parotid, and only 8 cases of involvement of the hard palate have been reported in the literature so far. Hereby, a case of painless, ulcerated palatal mass of 2 years of duration reported. A diagnosis of malignant plasmacytoid myoepithelioma was made with the aid of immunohistochemical analysis, and wide surgical excision was considered keeping in mind the biological behavior of the tumor.
