Cytophotometrical and immunohistochemical analysis of soft palate muscles of children with isolated cleft palate and combined cleft lip and palate.

Palatal muscle biopsies from the cleft margin of children were subjected to cytophotometrical and immunohistochemical analysis. Muscle fiber … ual skeletal muscle fiber types, a slow tonic fiber type was for the first time identified in cleft palate muscles. Comparison of two forms of cleft palate, isolated cleft palate and combined cleft lip and palate has shown decreased enzyme activities in muscle fibers of palatal muscles from combined cleft lip and palate. Fast oxidative glycolytic fibers …

Neurofibroma of the palate.

Neurofibroma is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor comprising variable mixture of Schwann cells, perineurial-like cells, and fibroblasts. Neurofibroma may occur as solitary lesion or as part of a generalised syndrome of neurofibromatosis or very rarely as multiple neurofibromas without any associated syndrome. There are two distinct variants of neurofibromatosis type I and type II. We present a case of neurofibroma of the hard palate associated with neurofibromatosis type I. The diagnosis of the lesion was made based on the clinical findings, family history, histopathology, and immunohisto…

Palatal reconstruction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The palate is a critical structure, playing pivotal roles in speech, swallowing, and mastication. Reconstruction of the palate is among the most difficult challenges faced by head and neck reconstructive surgeons. The primary aims of this review are to catalog the evolution of the classification systems for palatal defects, discuss decision making surrounding the various options for hard palate reconstruction, and address the special challenges and techniques involved in soft palate reconstruction. RECENT FINDINGS: The Okay Classification System has become the standard by w…

Speech after repair of isolated cleft palate and cleft lip and palate.

The speech of children with isolated cleft palate (CP) repaired by one surgeon has been compared with the speech of children with some form of unilateral cleft lip and palate (CLP) repaired by the same surgeon. All palate repairs included an intravelar veloplasty. We identified 57 children (5--12 years old) with cleft palates repaired in infancy, of which three patients with other medical problems were excluded. Of the 54 patients, 44 (81%) attended for review (27 CP, 17 CLP). Video recordings were analysed by two speech and language therapists, using the Cleft Audit Protocol for Speech. The C…

Unexpected Palatal Lesion: Pistachio Shell Mimicking a Palatal Tumor.

A 17-month-old child presented with a suspected nodule on the hard palate, initially diagnosed as a possible teratoma or adenoma. MRI showed a mucosal mass limited to the submucosa, leading to an excisional biopsy under general anesthesia. The lesion was ultimately identified as a pistachio shell, emphasizing the challenge of diagnosing foreign bodies in atypical locations. This case highlights the need for vigilance among clinicians in identifying uncommon presentations of foreign body ingestion.

Cytokeratin expression in palatal and marginal mucosa of cleft palate patients.

OBJECTIVE: The margin of a palatal cleft is a unique anatomical site since the palatal mucosa is continuous with the nasal or nasopharyngeal mucosa. The aim of this study was to compare the expression patterns of cytokeratins and basal membrane components of the mucosa in the area of the cleft. DESIGN: Biopsies from the mucosa of the hard palate and from the cleft margin in the soft palate were obtained from five patients during the primary surgical closure of the cleft. The tissues were processed for haematoxylin-eosin staining and for immunohistochemistry. Antibodies against the cytokeratin…

The relation of isolated cleft of the hard palate to submucous cleft palate.

The authors report a case of a spontaneous development of a fistula in a nonoperated submucous cleft palate in a male aged 40 years. This observation and the search of the underlying causes are based on their report from 1971 dealing with an analysis of 5 cases of an inborn defect in the hard palate.

Symptomatic and essential palatal tremor. 2. Differences of palatal movements.

Palatal tremor, a rhythmic movement disorder of the soft palate, may be described as two separate entities: symptomatic palatal tremor (SPT) and essential palatal tremor (EPT). The symptomatic form is associated with brain stem or cerebellar disease, whereas the essential form has no known etiology. A cardinal symptom of EPT is the presence of ear clicks, which do not occur in SPT. Visual observation of the movements in the two disorders suggests that the difference in symptoms is due to the activation of different palatal muscles, the levator veli palatini in SPT and the tensor veli palatini …

A new method for strengthening palatal closure defects of the hard palate.

Closure of minor defects in the hard palate can be done with local flaps. There is often a risk of perforation of the reconstructed area. In the case reported this complication was obvious due to a large, thin, flap-covered area. In strengthening the reconstruction fascia lata and Surgicel was used. The postoperative result was excellent and the rehabilitation of the patient was without complications.

Syngnathia Between the Palate and Mouth Floor, Cleft Palate, and Funnel Chest.

Syngnathia is a rare malformation involving soft tissue and/or bony adhesions between the maxilla and mandible. Less than 40 patients have been reported in the literature. Here the authors report a 6-month-old infant diagnosed as syngnathia of the palate and mouth floor combined with cleft palate and funnel chest in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Henan Provincial People's Hospital in January 2015. The authors discussed and evaluated the diagnostic and treatment difficulties on surgical and anesthetic procedure. There is no standard treatment protocol, but early treatment i…

Histology of palate and soft palate tonsil of collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu).

Peccaries are characterized by a prominent skin gland, known as scent gland, which is located in the middle of the rump. These animals are able to survive in a great variety of habitats, from humid tropical forests to semi-arid areas. They are omnivorous animals, and their diet includes fibrous material, vegetables, fruits, small vertebrates and insects. Collared peccary hard palate and soft palate tonsils were studied, macroscopic morphometric data were collected and tissue samples were paraffin-embedded. Sections were stained with HE, Gomori's trichrome and von Kossa; the first two were used…

Classification, recording, and cleft palate surgery at the Uppsala Cleft Palate Centre.

This paper describes the classification system, method of recording, and surgical techniques used in Uppsala for children with isolated cleft palate. The classification is based on the system described by Kernahan and Stark and the more detailed system described by the American Cleft Palate Association. Separation of the hard palate into thirds, and into right and left sides, assures a detailed description of the cleft, and separates small morphological differences. The longitudinal registration system was introduced into the Uppsala Cleft Palate Centre in 1967. After the initial recording at …
