Soil Microeukaryote Diversity in the Crop Fields of Panama.

Soil microeukaryotic communities are essential for nutrient cycling and the maintenance of soil fertility, yet their diversity in tropical agricultural systems remains poorly characterized. In this study, high-throughput metabarcoding of the V4 region of the 18S rRNA gene was used to characterize soil microeukaryotic communities across three agricultural regions of Panama. A total of 7714 unique operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were detected in composite soil samples collected from 44 sampling sites. The high-altitude region showed significantly greater species richness and distinct communit…

Nationwide epidemiology of candidiasis in Panama, 2010-2020.

Candidiasis is one of the most dangerous human diseases caused by fungi, resulting in high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Epidemiology is crucial for understanding the spread and risk factors of these infections. However, there is a lack of epidemiological data concerning the prevalence of candidiasis in Panama. Here, we collected and analyzed data from the Ministry of Health and reexamined recent literature to investigate the epidemiology of candidiasis in Panama from 2010 to 2020. Additionally, a dashboard was created to facilitate the visualization and management of the obtained data. O…

Drug resistance in children and adolescents with HIV in Panama.

OBJECTIVES: The inadequacy of resistance monitoring in Latin America leads to circulation of HIV strains with drug resistance mutations (DRMs), compromising ART effectiveness. This study describes the DRM prevalence in HIV-infected paediatric patients in Panama. METHODS: During 2018-19, plasma was collected from 76 HIV-infected children/adolescents (5 ART-naive, 71 treated) in Panama for HIV-1 DRM pol analysis, predicted antiretroviral (ARV) susceptibility by Stanford, and HIV-1 variant phylogenetic characterization. RESULTS: HIV-1 pol sequences were recovered from 67 (88.2%) of 76 children/…

Sarcophagid Myiasis in the Bufonid Rhinella alata in Panama.

Rhinella alata is a small terrestrial bufonid that occurs in Ecuador, Colombia, and Panama. Between January 2014 and October 2015, we inspected 339 R. alata from Panama and report myiasis in eight of these toads. All infested toads were male and presented with mobile dark fly larvae visible beneath the ventral skin. At necropsy, we identified the larvae as belonging to the family Sarcophagidae (flesh flies). Flesh flies have been variously considered as predators, parasitoids, and parasites of anurans. There are at least four species of flesh flies that infect adult amphibians in the Neotropic…

[Survey on avoidable blindness and visual impairment in Panama].

OBJECTIVE: Determine prevalence of blindness and visual impairment in adults aged ≥ 50 years in Panama, identify their main causes, and characterize eye health services. METHODS: Cross-sectional population study using standard Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness methodology. Fifty people aged ≥ 50 years were selected from each of 84 clusters chosen through representative random sampling of the entire country. Visual acuity was assessed using a Snellen chart; lens and posterior pole status were assessed by direct ophthalmoscopy. Cataract surgery coverage was calculated and its quality asse…

Myiasis in a wounded soldier returning from Panama.

An imported case of traumatic myiasis occurred in a soldier wounded during military action in Panama in December 1989 and evacuated to Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. At the medical center, five larvae were removed from the scalp wound, reared to the adult stage, and identified as Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel). Though this was the only reported case of wound myiasis of the 254 servicemen evacuated for medical treatment, this incident indicates a potential mechanism for the reintroduction of C. hominivorax into the United States.

[Helicobacter pylori and gastroduodenal pathology in the Republic of Panama].

129 patients, Panamanians and North Americans, with chronic dyspepsia, were prospectively studied regarding infection by H. pylori and the type of gastroduodenal pathology diagnosed by endoscopy and histology. The rapid urea split test was compared with the culture. The percentage of patients infected by H. pylori increased with age. Patients under 30, 37%; 31 to 40, 61%; 41 to 76, 75%. H. pylori was found in 70% of the Panamanians and 54% of the americans. H. pylori infected 81%, 75%, 54% and 29% of the patients with duodenal ulcer, chronic gastritis, duodenitis, and patients with normal endo…

Human immunodeficiency virus infection in the Republic of Panama.

Thirty-one documented acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) cases occurred in Panama during 1984-1987. Twenty-three (74%) patients were homosexual males and all but 2 patients recognized prior to June 1987 have died. To identify risk factors for human immunodeficiency virus infection, 287 male homosexual residents of Panama City were enrolled in a cross-sectional study. Nine had human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody. Travel to the United States, homosexual relations with United States nationals in Panama, and sexual contacts in Panamanian clubs and bars were associated with human im…

[Benign hemophagocytic syndrome. First confirmed case in Panama].

The authors present the clinical history of the first case of benign hemophagocytic syndrome diagnosed in Panama. The patient, a 4 year old girl, presented with fever, anemia, cervical lymphadenitis, hepatomegaly, lymphocytosis and histophagocytosis of red cells, lymphocytes, neutrophils and platelets. Spontaneous remission of the fever occurred sixty days after the onset of the disease. Although it was not possible to demonstrate serologically that the syndrome was due to acute toxoplasmosis, she was treated with sulfadiazine and pyrimethamine for fifteen days, on the 37th hospital day, and w…

Enteritis due to Salmonella panama from infected ham.

After the appearance of sporadic cases of enteritis due to Salmonella panama, baked ham from one supplier was implicated as the source of infection. No pathogenic organisms were isolated from the working surfaces of the factory involved or from samples of a day's bacon output, but S. panama was isolated from the factory sewers. Stool examinations of the 500 employees showed one man in the baked ham section to be excreting S. panama. He was removed from work and no further infections were reported from the district. The organism could no longer be found in the sewers. Some weeks later, further i…

Epidemiological Chronicle of the First Recovered Coronavirus Disease Patient From Panama: Evidence of Early Cluster Transmission in a High School of Panama City.

The first patient infected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in Panama was reported on March 9, 2020. Here, we describe the first case of recovery from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the country. The patient was a 49-year-old male high school teacher, who did not show any primary symptoms of COVID-19 described by health authorities as the signs for medical attention. Nonetheless, he became severely ill over the course of 2 weeks and almost lost the battle against COVID-19. The identification of the first cluster of SARS-CoV-2 community transmission in the …

Clonal outbreak of Plasmodium falciparum infection in eastern Panama.

Identifying the source of resurgent parasites is paramount to a strategic, successful intervention for malaria elimination. Although the malaria incidence in Panama is low, a recent outbreak resulted in a 6-fold increase in reported cases. We hypothesized that parasites sampled from this epidemic might be related and exhibit a clonal population structure. We tested the genetic relatedness of parasites, using informative single-nucleotide polymorphisms and drug resistance loci. We found that parasites were clustered into 3 clonal subpopulations and were related to parasites from Colombia. Two c…
