Patterns of soil-transmitted helminth aggregation in the human host population after several years of intensive mass drug administration.

BACKGROUND: Community-wide mass drug administration (cMDA) is known as an effective, albeit costly, control strategy for soil-transmitted helminth (STH) parasites. A better understanding of STH aggregation after many rounds of cMDA could help shape more cost-effective policies. METHODS: This analysis uses data from the Geshiyaro project, aiming to break STH transmission by cMDA and water, sanitation and hygiene interventions. Ascaris lumbricoides infection prevalence is derived from egg count data and parasite aggregation is obtained by fitting a negative binomial distribution to the frequenc

Use of the FLOTAC technique as a new coproparasitological diagnostic method in aquatic mammals and comparison with traditional methods.

The inadequate choice of a diagnostic method or the option for techniques that have low sensitivity and specificity may limit the diagnosis of parasitic agents that affect aquatic mammals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the FLOTAC technique and compare it with three traditional methods (Willis, sedimentation and centrifugation- flotation) used in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal parasites in aquatic mammals. For this, 129 fecal samples from 12 species were collected. Each sample was submitted to laboratory processing using the Willis, Hoffman techniques, Faust method

Faecal egg counts provide a reliable measure of Trichostrongylus tenuis intensities in free-living red grouse Lagopus lagopus scoticus.

The reliability of different egg counting methods for estimating the intensity of Trichostrongylus tenuis infections in red grouse, Lagopus lagopus scoticus, was investigated in the autumn, when grouse may harbour high parasite intensities. Possible limitations to the use of these methods were also examined. Faecal egg counts were found to accurately estimate T. tenuis worm intensities, at least up to an observed maximum of c. 8000 worms. Two egg counting methods (smear and McMaster) gave consistent results, although the exact relationship with worm intensity differed according to the method u

Host-parasite relationships in infections with two Kenyan isolates of Schistosoma mansoni in NMRI mice.

To relate the marked differences observed in morbidity due to Schistosoma mansoni infection in the Kangundo and Kibwezi areas of Machakos District, Kenya with possible parasite-related differences in pathobiological characteristics, a quantitative comparison of the host-parasite relationship in infections in NMRI mice with S. mansoni isolates from the 2 areas was conducted. One hundred and 20 cercariae were used per mouse, and necropsy took place between 35 and 94 days following infection. Parameters assessed comprised worm establishment, tissue egg counts, fecal egg excretion, egg production/

An asthma-associated genetic variant of STAT6 predicts low burden of ascaris worm infestation.

Th-2 immune mechanisms are involved in the pathology of asthma and in the protective immune response to parasitic worms. Common upregulating genetic variants of Th-2 immune signalling are risk factors for asthma, and we tested whether they may confer a counteradvantage in protecting against parasitic worms. We examined the intensity of infection by the parasitic worm, Ascaris lumbricoides, by microsopic counting of ascaris eggs in the stool of 614 schoolchildren from an area of endemic ascaris infection in China. We investigated the relationship between the intensity of ascaris infection and c

Severity of Schistosoma haematobium co-infection with malaria in school-children is potentially modulated by host CD14 gene variants.

OBJECTIVE: Schistosomiasis remains a chronic disease of global importance, especially in many rural areas of the world where co-infection with Plasmodium falciparum is common. It is critical to decipher the role of single or co-infected disease scenarios on immune system regulation in such individuals and how such co-infections can either ameliorate or complicate immune response and the consequent disease outcome. First, 10 ml of urine samples, collected between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, was filtered for diagnosis of schistosomiasis, while egg count, indicative of disease severity, was determined

Reproductive females and young mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon × Ovis sp.) in poor body condition are the main spreaders of gastrointestinal parasites.

Several individual, environmental and parasitic factors can influence the impacts of parasites on host's fitness and on host's ability to transmit these parasites to new hosts. Identifying these factors and the individuals who play a greater role in parasite transmission is of main concern for the development of parasite control strategies. In the present study, we aimed to describe the diversity of gastrointestinal parasites and to identify the individual factors influencing the faecal spreading of parasites in a free-ranging population of Mediterranean mouflon. From the analysis of 433 faeca

Demographic, environmental and physiological predictors of gastrointestinal parasites in urban raccoons.

Raccoons are host to diverse gastrointestinal parasites, but little is known about the ecology of these parasites in terms of their interactions with each other during coinfections, their interactions with host physiology and environmental factors, and their impact on raccoon health and survival. As a first step, we investigated the patterns of parasite infection and their demographic distribution in an urban-suburban population of raccoons trapped in the summers and autumns of 2018 and 2019. We collected faecal samples, demographic data, morphometric measurements, and blood smears, and used G

Parasitological observations of Schistosoma bovis in normal and T-cell deprived mice.

A laboratory life-cycle of Schistosoma bovis was established in order to study the host-parasite relationship in immunologically intact and T-cell deprived mice. Normal mice were found to have 'self-cured' their S. bovis infections almost completely by 10 weeks after cercarial administration, and there was no evidence of self-cure by day 79 in T-cell deprived animals. Thus, groups of deprived mice autopsied between 9 and 11 weeks after infection were invariably found to have greater worm burdens and a greater total number of eggs in the liver than comparably-infected normal mice. However, live

Evaluating the Effects of Ivermectin Treatment on Communities of Gastrointestinal Parasites in Translocated Woylies (Bettongia penicillata).

Wildlife species are often treated with anti-parasitic drugs prior to translocation, despite the effects of this treatment being relatively unknown. Disruption of normal host-parasite relationships is inevitable during translocation, and targeted anti-parasitic drug treatment may exacerbate this phenomenon with inadvertent impacts on both target and non-target parasite species. Here, we investigate the effects of ivermectin treatment on communities of gastrointestinal parasites in translocated woylies (Bettongia penicillata). Faecal samples were collected at three time points (at the time of t

[Parasitological evaluation of the stool].

The parasitologic investigation performed without clinical orientation in a routine laboratory allowed to identify the most common parasites, often cysts of protozoa, using a minimal technique. A more accurate investigation (e.g.: concentration, extraction and flotation) was hampered by a too large number of systematic specimens. The use of an immersion objective improves the detection and identification of cysts of protozoa. There is still some controversy on the virulence of small amoebae, flagellates, Blastocysts and Entamoeba coli, the infection being often massive. AIDS should predispose

Age-specific impacts of vegetation functional traits on gastrointestinal nematode parasite burdens in a large herbivore.

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasites play an important role in the ecological dynamics of many animal populations. Recent studies suggest that fine-scale spatial variation in GIN infection dynamics is important in wildlife systems, but the environmental drivers underlying this variation remain poorly understood. We used data from over two decades of GIN parasite egg counts, host space use, and spatial vegetation data from a long-term study of Soay sheep on St Kilda to test how spatial autocorrelation and vegetation in an individual's home range predict parasite burden across three age gro…

Hookworm burdens and faecal egg counts: an analysis of the biological basis of variation.

The relationships between various measures of faecal egg output and hookworm burdens were investigated in 84 villagers from West Bengal with mixed Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale infections. The pattern of day to day variability in egg counts from individuals can be characterized by the linear relationship between the logarithms of the variances and means. Egg output is shown to be non-periodic in long runs of day-to-day records. The distribution of worm numbers per host is well described by the negative binomial probability model, and the relationship between per capita egg outpu

Viability of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs eliminated after anti-helminthic therapy.

The viability of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs passed in the feces was evaluated after treatment of patients with one of the anti-helminthic drugs (thiabendazole, levamisole, cambendazole, pyrantel pamoate, mebendazole or praziquantel). For each drug, a group of 5 children was selected and their feces collected 24 h before treatment and 24, 48 and 72 h after drug administration, except for mebendazole, with the feces being collected throughout the period of treatment. After sedimentation, the total amount of eggs from each collection was transferred to tissue culture flasks containing 10 ml H2SO4

Epidemiology of human hookworm and Ascaris lumbricoides infestations in rural Gambia.

In a cross-sectional study of helminth infections in a rural village in The Gambia, West Africa, hookworm, probably Necator americanus and Ascaris lumbricoides were found to be the most prevalent helminths present at prevalence levels of 30% and 25% respectively. Other parasites present were Trichuris trichiura (2.4%) and Schistosoma mansoni (1.5%). The mean egg counts of N. americanus and A. lumbricoides in all age groups and in the total population were low. Egg counts between age and sex groups were not statistically significant. The frequency distributions of both N. americanus and A. lumb

Faecal worm egg count analysis for targeting anthelmintic treatment in horses: points to consider.

Equine gastrointestinal nematodes are ubiquitous; in horses that graze contaminated pasture and that are not treated appropriately, large numbers of worms can accumulate, which can lead to serious clinical disease. Nematode control has traditionally followed interval treatment regimens, which involve regular anthelmintic administration to all horses based on the strongyle egg reappearance periods of each drug, usually defined around the time of licensing. Interval treatment programmes have resulted in substantial reductions in large strongyle disease, but have made major contributions to the d
