The relationship between autism and parenting stress.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed associations between parenting a child with autism and stress indicators. METHODS: In the 2003 National Survey of Children's Health, parents or other knowledgeable adult respondents for children aged 4 to 17 years reported their recent feelings about their life sacrifices to care for their child, difficulty caring for their child, frustration with their child's actions, and anger toward their child. Responses were compiled in the Aggravation in Parenting Scale. Parents of children reported to have autism (N = 459) were compared with parents of: (1) children with special…

Maternal inattention and impulsivity and parenting behaviors.

This study extends previous research by examining whether maternal inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity are associated with different parenting behaviors. Ninety-six mother-son dyads participated in the study, and the boys ranged between 4 and 8 years of age. Maternal inattention was uniquely and positively associated with mothers' use of inconsistent discipline and lower involvement with the child after controlling for impulsivity and the control variables of child age, maternal depression and hostility, family socioeconomic status, and child behavior problems. Maternal impulsivity was…

Behavioral observations of parenting in battered women.

The current study assessed observational data of parenting in 95 battered women and their school-aged children's behavioral adjustment and analyzed them within an ecological framework. Results indicated that maternal experience of psychological and physical abuse predicts maternal warmth, but not maternal authority-control, over and above ontogenic and exosystemic factors. In addition, maternal experience of psychological abuse and maternal authority-control predicted children's observed behavior, over and above child characteristics. An ecological framework for understanding the effects of do…

Therapeutic parenting--a program for home care.

There is evidence that inadequate parenting in early childhood, combined with socioeconomic risk factors, can contribute to intellectual deficits, character disorders, and antisocial behaviors in children. Early intervention home care services can circumvent these problems.

Parenting provided by adults with mental retardation.

Studies assessing the quality of parenting provided by adults with mental retardation present conflicting conclusions. Some consider the majority to be doing reasonably well, whilst others report frequently unsatisfactory caretaking. There are a number of reasons for such different views. First, inconsistent selection criteria make it hard to compare across studies. In particular, sample composition will be influenced by the recruitment source. For example, if parents have been chosen from voluntary educational programmes a rather different picture is likely to be found than if they have been …

Family Mealtimes in Hispanic Households: Associations of General Parenting Styles and Food Parenting Practices with Adolescent Food Group Intake.

Background/Objectives: Hispanic adolescents experience disproportionately high rates of obesity and diet-related health risks, yet the family and parenting factors that shape their dietary behaviors remain incompletely understood. This study examined associations between parent sociodemographic characteristics and family meal frequency; among general parenting styles, food parenting practices, and family meal frequency; and between family meal frequency and adolescent intake across major USDA food groups, among Hispanic parent-adolescent dyads. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was cond…

The association between parenting difficulties in children with autism and parental anxiety and the moderating role of parenting stress.

This study explores the impact of parenting difficulties in children with autism on parental anxiety, and analyzes the moderating role of parenting stress. A total of 207 primary caregivers of autistic children from 13 rehabilitation institutions in Nantong City were selected as subjects, covering the period from May 2024 to May 2025. Data was collected using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Chinese version of the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF). The hypothesized model was tested through correlation analysis and hierarc…

Development of the Nighttime Parenting Scale: Differentiating nighttime versus general parenting practices and their impact on youth sleep health.

OBJECTIVES: The current study provides a novel method of assessing the impact of nighttime parenting practices on youth sleep health during the sensitive transition from childhood to adolescence (ie., peri-puberty). Specifically, we aimed to advance the measurement of nighttime parenting by developing a conceptually driven questionnaire for use in research and clinical settings. METHOD: A total of 625 parents (67.9% mothers) of peripubertal youth (age M=11.6, SD=1.31) were recruited online and completed self-report questionnaires. The sample was primarily White (67.4%), followed by 16.5% Blac…

Is comorbidity in the eating disorders related to perceptions of parenting? Criterion validity of the revised Young Parenting Inventory.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies support the reliability and validity of the Young Parenting Inventory-Revised (YPI-R) and its use in investigating the role of parenting in the aetiology and maintenance of eating pathology. However, criterion validity has yet to be fully established. To investigate one aspect of criterion validity, this study examines the association between parenting and comorbid problems in the eating disorders (including general psychopathology and impulsivity). METHOD: The participants were 124 women with eating disorders. They completed the YPI-R and the Brief Symptom Inventor…

The parenting project for teen mothers: the impact of a nurturing curriculum on adolescent parenting skills and life hassles.

OBJECTIVE: Many teen parents and their babies are at a significant disadvantage because of poverty and inadequate parenting skills. We undertook a study aimed at increasing parenting skills and improving attitudes of teen mothers through a structured psychoeducational group model based on the Nurturing Curriculum. METHODS: All adolescent mothers in the Young Parents' Program were offered enrollment in a 12-week group parenting curriculum (intervention group) and were compared with those who declined the intervention but agreed to participate as comparison subjects (comparison group). This stu…

Mental Health, Parenting Stress, and Parenting Practices of Parents of Deaf or Hard of Hearing Children During the Pandemic.

The authors investigated parent mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic and its association with parenting behaviors of parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. An electronic survey was distributed to parents (N = 103). The results showed that they were experiencing elevated anxiety, depression, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. A combined model demonstrated that parental distress was significantly associated with depression and with parental reports of symptoms indicating significantly higher distress. Parental distress was also significantly associated with paren…

Mothering versus fathering? Positive parenting versus negative parenting? Their relative importance in predicting adolescent aggressive behavior: A longitudinal comparison.

To understand whose parenting (mothers vs. fathers) and which type of parenting (warmth vs. hostility) is more important in predicting adolescent aggression, this study applied dominance analysis to evaluate the relative importance of four different parenting dimensions (maternal hostility, paternal hostility, maternal warmth, and paternal warmth). Four waves of adolescent-reported longitudinal data from the PROSPER project (N = 626, 52% adolescent girls, 89% White rural, age 12 to 15) were used to investigate longitudinal change in the relative importance of these dimensions over time. Findin…

Parenting With a Substance Abuse History: The Moderating Role of Parenting Behaviors on Obesity and Internalizing Symptoms in Adolescence.

Although numerous studies have shown that child obesity is associated with internalizing symptoms, relatively few studies have examined the role of parenting behaviors on this relationship. Youth meeting obesity status may be at higher risk of psychosocial maladjustment when exposed to more vulnerable parenting contexts. The current study interviewed mothers with a history of substance abuse to assess whether parenting behaviors moderated the relationship between obesity and internalizing symptoms among adolescents (N = 160; 51% girls; M = 12.76 years). Hierarchical regression analyses identif…

The relationship between parental fatigue, parenting self-efficacy and behaviour: implications for supporting parents in the early parenting period.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence indicates that parental fatigue is associated with low warmth and increased hostility in parent-child interactions. One possible pathway by which fatigue may impact on parenting behaviour is via parental self-efficacy (PSE), whereby high fatigue may undermine PSE, which is often associated with suboptimal parenting behaviour. The current study sought to explore a model of the relationships between parental fatigue, parenting warmth and hostility, where PSE mediates these relationships and whether the nature of these relationships differ by social or family context…

The Triple P-Positive Parenting Program: a systematic review and meta-analysis of a multi-level system of parenting support.

This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effects of the multilevel Triple P-Positive Parenting Program system on a broad range of child, parent and family outcomes. Multiple search strategies identified 116 eligible studies conducted over a 33-year period, with 101 studies comprising 16,099 families analyzed quantitatively. Moderator analyses were conducted using structural equation modeling. Risk of bias within and across studies was assessed. Significant short-term effects were found for: children's social, emotional and behavioral outcomes (d=0.473); parenting practices (d=0.57…

Mentalization-based intervention for parents with elevated parenting stress: protocol of a RCT of the lighthouse parenting programme in China.

UNLABELLED: The period of childhood and early adolescence, specifically prior to the age of 14, is a critical phase for the prevention of mental health problems. Nevertheless, prevention programs for this age group remain under recognized in China. In this domain, the lighthouse parenting programme (LPP) has successfully achieved initial results in several countries. This paper describes the protocol of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) using a waiting list control design to evaluate the potential efficacy and applicability of LPP with Chinese parents. The trial is designed as an exploratory…

Examining the characteristics of pregnant and parenting, and non-parenting young adults experiencing homelessness living with and without their children.

Pregnant and parenting young adults experiencing homelessness (YAEH) face many challenges related to complex circumstances that lead to parent-child separation. This can be emotionally taxing on YAEH who are already disproportionately burdened by mental health disorders. Little is known about the parenting and mental health support needs among YAEH, particularly surrounding parent-child separation. To fill this gap, cross-sectional data from the Homeless Youth Risk and Resilience Survey, collected from YAEH ages 18-26 across seven US cities, were analyzed in this study. Demographic characteris…
