Pasteurella multocida ecthyma complicated by necrotizing fasciitis.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a serious infection of the skin and soft tissues. Pasteurella multocida is rarely reported to cause necrotizing fasciitis and is associated with high mortality. We describe a female patient with a past medical history of diabetes mellitus and myeloproliferative disorder presenting with bullae and erythema of the right forearm secondary to P. multocida infection after possible cat bite. Despite adequate antibiotic coverage she developed necrotizing fasciitis diagnosed clinically and on diagnostic imaging. Patient was taken to the operating room emergently and underwent …

Pasteurella multocida: from zoonosis to cellular microbiology.

In a world where most emerging and reemerging infectious diseases are zoonotic in nature and our contacts with both domestic and wild animals abound, there is growing awareness of the potential for human acquisition of animal diseases. Like other Pasteurellaceae, Pasteurella species are highly prevalent among animal populations, where they are often found as part of the normal microbiota of the oral, nasopharyngeal, and upper respiratory tracts. Many Pasteurella species are opportunistic pathogens that can cause endemic disease and are associated increasingly with epizootic outbreaks. Zoonotic

Necrotizing fasciitis due to Pasteurella multocida infection.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a potentially fatal clinical disease caused by infection with various bacteria in addition to streptococci, which are common causative agents. We report on a rare case of this disease in association with Pasteurella multocida infection. A 58-year-old man had systemic features of shock after a 15-hour history of a painful swelling on the right lower leg. The swelling led to skin blistering and necrosis from which P. multocida was isolated. Those lesions progressed rapidly. The patient also had a history of chronic liver injury as described in previous reports.

Severe Pasteurella multocida infections in pregnant women.

We report 2 cases of severe infections due to Pasteurella multocida, both occurring during pregnancy in previously healthy women. Both women had contact with animals (dog and cat) but neither of them had been bitten. Apart from a slight decrease in IgG levels, no immunological defects could be detected. Both women had received oral phenoxymethylpenicillin in the early phase of the disease, but still fell ill with severe infections. One woman had meningitis while the other suffered from cellulitis with deep abscess formation.

Pasteurella multocida infective endocarditis: a case report.

A 17-year-old man presented with acute febrile illness with jaundice, embolic skin lesion, heart murmur, renal insufficiency and abnormal CSF. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from blood cultures. In spite of adequate antibiotic treatment for endocarditis of the mitral valve, he developed a fatal ruptured cerebral mycotic aneurysm. Post mortem examination revealed an atrial septal defect, vegetation at the anterior mitral leaflet, intraventricular, subarachnoid and intracerebral hemorrhage.

Pasteurella multocida osteomyelitis caused by cat bite.

A previously healthy 15-year-old girl was bitten by a cat in her left thumb. Despite initial treatment with penicillin she developed osteomyelitis after a period of four months. Pasteurella multocida was cultured from the necrotic bone. The infection showed low activity and was successfully treated with surgery combined with penicillin.

Hemorrhagic septicemia in fallow deer (Dama dama) caused by Pasteurella multocida multocida.

Four outbreaks of hemorrhagic septicemia caused by Pasteurella multocida multocida occurred in a population of 1,800 fallow deer (Dama dama) during 1992-1996. A total of 340 fallow deer were submitted for postmortem examination. Pasteurellosis was diagnosed in 273 of 312 deer suspected of having septicemia. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from 257 animals, and the diagnosis was based on typical pathologic changes alone in the other 16 animals. Pasteurella multocida was isolated in pure culture from 219 of 248 samples of cerebrospinal fluid. Eighteen animals were observed moribund with sever…

Pasteurella multocida polyserositis in growing-finishing pigs.

Pasteurella multocida is the main secondary bacterium isolated from cases of swine pneumonia. Although highly pathogenic strains of P. multocida have been associated with primary septic lesions and polyserositis in pigs, studies on this pathological presentation in naturally occurring cases are limited. The aim of this work was to characterize the clinical, pathological and molecular findings in cases of P. multocida polyserositis in growing-finishing pigs in a commercial farm in Brazil. The mean age of 17 investigated pigs was 120 days. Clinically, the disease was acute (11/17), with clinical…

Pasteurella multocida Vaccine Candidates: A Systematic Review.

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is the highly contagious causative agent of a broad range of diseases in animals as well as an occasional human pathogen. Economically significant infections caused by P. multocida include avian fowl cholera, rabbit snuffles, and hemorrhagic septicemia in cattle, goats and pigs. Chemotherapy of pasteurellosis infections has some limitations, such as high cost of treatment, low efficacy, and the possibility of therapy failure due to antibiotic resistance. Prophylactic immunization offers a safe and effective preventive measure in case of zoonotic diseases. B…

Pasteurella multocida infection in solid organ transplantation.

We present a case of fulminant Pasteurella multocida sepsis in a 66-year-old man who had undergone a renal transplant. Our patient lived with two dogs and a cat with which he was very close. We propose that his bacteraemia might have resulted from direct inoculation of P multocida via his cat licking the venous stasis ulcers on his legs. The patient's clinical course was complicated by cardiopulmonary failure and he ultimately succumbed to his infection. P multocida is a rare cause of infections in immunocompromised hosts, epidemiologically linked to exposure to cats, dogs, and other animals. …

Development of immunization trials against Pasteurella multocida.

Pasteurellosis is one of the most important respiratory diseases facing economically valuable farm animals such as poultry, rabbit, cattle, goats and pigs. It causes severe economic loss due to its symptoms that range from primary local infection to fatal septicemia. Pasteurella multocida is the responsible pathogen for this contagious disease. Chemotherapeutic treatment of Pasteurella is expensive, lengthy, and ineffective due to the increasing antibiotics resistance of the bacterium, as well as its toxicity to human consumers. Though, biosecurity measures played a role in diminishing the spr…

Community-acquired pneumonia due to Pasteurella multocida.

Most cases of community-acquired pneumonia result from infection with predictable common pathogens. However, rare patients develop pneumonia from unusual bacterial species such as Pasteurella multocida, a Gram-negative oral commensal of most dogs and cats. The majority of P. multocida infections involve skin and soft tissue and complicate a bite or scratch. I report the case of an elderly man who owned 16 cats and developed bacteremic pneumonia with P. multocida. .

Pasteurella multocida pneumonia complicated by Staphylococcus aureus.

A 71-year-old woman presented with acute non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema. She proved to have a Pasteurella multocida pneumonia, with blood stream invasion by the organism, and required positive pressure ventilation for 53 days. Penicillin G., the drug of choice for this infection, failed to reverse the steady decline in her arterial oxygen-tension, and it was only after treatment with chloramphenicol and prednisolone that she began to improve. Serological tests strongly indicated the presence of a Staphylococcus aureus infection and the delay in giving antibiotics appropriate to this second p…

Late postoperative infection caused by Pasteurella multocida.

Pasteurella multocida is often found in local infections after animal bites. Septic conditions however are rare. A case of late infection by P. multocida at the site of the osteosynthesis 1 year after a primarily healed pertrochanteric fracture is described. The patient had a cat. After extraction of the plate and screws and treatment with penicillin the infection healed uneventfully.

Pasteurella multocida infection of poultry farm rats.

Thirty-four rat carcases from 11 poultry farms were examined for the presence of Pasteurella multocida; 14 out of 34 (41 per cent) proved positive after mouse inoculation, compared with five out of 34 (14 per cent) using media alone. No salmonellae were recovered from 27 rat carcases using enrichment media. Poultry pasteurellosis was present on two farms with infected rats and the same serotype was present in rats and poultry in those cases.

[Post-traumatic meningitis due to Pasteurella multocida].

The clinical data of a 14-year old female patient with posttraumatic meningitis by Pasteurella multocida are reported. The behaviour of the isolated strain is recorded in cultural and biochemical aspect as well as in animal experiment. The importance of the infection with Pasteurella multocida is lined out and the possible origin of the disease in the reported case is discussed. Finally some problems of special bacteriological diagnosis are explained and hints are given in this respect.

Study in the iron uptake mechanism of Pasteurella multocida.

Pasteurella multocida infects a wide range of animals, causing hemorrhagic septicemia or infectious pneumonia. Iron is an essential nutrient for growth, colonization, and proliferation of P. multocida during infection of the host, and competition for iron ions in the host is a critical link in the pathogenesis of this pathogen. In recent years, there has been significant progress in the study of the iron uptake system of P. multocida, including its occurrence and regulatory mechanisms. In order to provide a systematic theoretical basis for the study of the molecular pathogenesis of the P. mult…
