Review: spinal shock, crossed extensor reflex, and mass reflex in dogs and cats-a literature review, clinical observations and considerations.

The phenomena of spinal shock, crossed extensor reflex, and mass reflex are discussed to different extents in veterinary neurology textbooks, in literature on experimental animal models, and clinical reports on veterinary neurological patients. Aspects related to timing of onset of spinal pathology, their implications for neuroanatomical localizations, and their prognostic significance are clinically relevant. In this review article, the authors discuss and summarize the current literature and highlight collective observations in clinical veterinary neurology patients. Underreported observatio

Day one core competencies in veterinary dentistry.

This article describes the core competencies recommended for inclusion in the veterinary curriculum for all veterinary graduates based on the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges Competency-Based Veterinary Education document. General practice companion animal veterinarians are frequently presented with patients having dental, oral, or maxillofacial pathology, and veterinary graduates will be relied upon for recommendations for the maintenance of oral health, including the prevention of periodontal disease, identification of endodontic disease, and knowledge of developmental def

Diagnostic sampling and gross pathology of New World camelids.

This article provides an overview of tests and appropriate samples to send to a Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for the diagnosis of common diseases of New World Camelids (NWC) such as abortions, congenital anomalies, anemia, enteritis, endoparasitism, gastric ulcer, hepatic lipidosis, encephalitis, pneumonia, dermatosis, neoplasia and cryptococcosis. Unique anatomic features of NWC and common findings encountered during gross necropsy examination are briefly reviewed.

Detecting and recording cardiac murmurs in clinically healthy puppies in first opinion veterinary practice at the first health check.

BACKGROUND: The frequency that cardiac murmurs are identified and recorded in first opinion veterinary practices at the first health check in puppies is unknown. The aims of the study were to assess the agreement between first opinion veterinary practitioners, a veterinary student and a veterinary cardiology specialist on detecting murmurs, and to establish whether abnormal auscultation findings had been recorded in the health certificates of clinically healthy puppies. The study included prospective and retrospective investigations, where the prospectively collected auscultation findings from

Theobald Smith and animal parasitology: highlights on an anniversary.

In marking the 100th anniversary of the landmark publication in 1893 by Theobald Smith and Frederick L. Kilborne on cattle babesiosis and arthropod transmission, this article takes note of other contributions of Theobald Smith to the knowledge of a variety of parasitic organisms. Notable are his studies on the protozoan agent of avian enterohepatitis. The results of Smith's work in comparative pathology, to which he devoted his professional life, have had broad applications with economic and health benefits for domestic animals and humans.

LEUCOENCEPHALOPATHY IN MINK.

In a herd of standard minks 30 cases of leucoencephalopathy were demonstrated in the mink kits in the years 1962 and 1963. The disease is assumed to be hereditary and due to a sub-lethal, recessive, autosomal factor. A comparison with the forms of diffuse sclerosis found in man demonstrated that the disease, as it appeared in minks, bore a striking resemblance to the so-called metachromatic type of leucoencephalopathy.

Optimizing transducer choice for the detection of alveolar-interstitial syndrome in dogs and cats: an evidence-based review.

Alveolar-interstitial syndrome (AIS) is a common ultrasonographic finding in dogs and cats with pulmonary pathology, including cardiogenic pulmonary edema, noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and pulmonary contusion. Point-of-care lung ultrasound (LUS) has emerged as a rapid, noninvasive, and repeatable diagnostic tool for identifying AIS in emergency and critical care patients. Despite its increasing clinical adoption, transducer selection remains largely operator-dependent, with limited evidence-based guidance for veterinary applications. This revi

Proceedings of the 2015 National Toxicology Program Satellite Symposium.

The 2015 Annual National Toxicology Program Satellite Symposium, entitled "Pathology Potpourri" was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at the American College of Veterinary Pathologists/American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology/Society of Toxicologic Pathology combined meeting. The goal of this symposium is to present and discuss diagnostic pathology challenges or nomenclature issues. Because of the combined meeting, both laboratory and domestic animal cases were presented. This article presents summaries of the speakers' talks, including challenging diagnostic cases or nomenclature issu

["Arnold Näf: an extract from notes of the entire veterinary medicine of 1864"].

Arnold Näf studied Veterinary Medicine at the Tierarzneischule in Zürich from 1861 to 1864. During the lectures in clinical medicine he made several notes, which were published in the book: "Arnold Näf: Notes from the entire veterinary medicine 1864". In the present work the person of prosector Meyer together with his lectures about obstetrics, horse shoeing, specific pathology and therapy as well as prescription science are described in more detail. Hans Jakob Meyer was born in Schlieren, January 10, 1831 and died May 8, 1895. He was teaching Veterinary Medicine from 1855 to 1895 at the Tiera

Canine, Feline, and Murine Mammary Tumors as a Model for Translational Research in Breast Cancer.

In veterinary medicine, mammary tumors are the most common neoplasms in female dogs and the third most frequent in cats, representing a significant challenge. Efforts have been directed toward adopting standardized diagnostic criteria to better understand tumor behavior and progression in these species. Meanwhile, the use of animal models has substantially advanced the understanding of comparative mammary carcinogenesis. These models provide critical insights into factors responsible for the disease in humans, with the expectation that such factors can be identified and controlled. In this con

CT and gross pathology are comparable methods for detecting some degenerative sacroiliac joint lesions in dogs.

Degenerative sacroiliac joint disease is a cause of lumbosacral pain in dogs; however, published information on cross-sectional imaging characteristics is limited. Objectives of this retrospective, secondary analysis, methods-comparison study were to test hypotheses that CT lesions reported in humans with degenerative sacroiliac joint disease are also present in dogs, and that CT is comparable to gross pathology for detecting these lesions. Matched CT and gross pathology slice images of 30 sacroiliac joints were retrieved from a previous prospective, canine cadaver study. A veterinary radiolog

Interobserver Agreement Using Histological Scoring of the Canine Liver.

BACKGROUND: Grading schemes for the assessment of hepatic fibrosis and necroinflammatory activity in humans previously have been applied to dogs with chronic hepatitis. Interobserver agreement is a desirable characteristic for any histological scoring scheme. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To assess interobserver agreement associated with pathologists using a previously published histological scoring scheme to assess hepatic fibrosis and necroinflammatory activity in dogs and to compare fibrosis scores assigned to serial sections stained with hematoxylin & eosin (H&E) and picrosirius red. ANIMALS: H

Aerosol Generation During Bone-Sawing Procedures in Veterinary Autopsies.

Bone-sawing procedures are routinely performed during veterinary and human autopsies and represent an important source for infectious aerosols. Here we investigate the generation of aerosols during bone-sawing procedures using 5 different saws regularly used in veterinary and human pathology. In particular, the electrical bone band saw produced vast amounts of aerosolized particles less than 5 µm in diameter, which spread rapidly throughout the entire autopsy hall, leading to an exposure of all personnel. Other sawing devices tested were a diamond-coated cut grinder, an oscillating saw, a reci
