False arrhythmia alarms reduction in the intensive care unit: a multimodal approach.

The purpose of this study was to develop algorithms to lower the incidence of false arrhythmia alarms in the ICU using information from independent sources, namely electrocardiogram (ECG), arterial blood pressure (ABP) and photoplethysmogram (PPG). Our approach relies on robust adaptive signal processing techniques in order to extract accurate heart rate (HR) values from the different waveforms. Based on the quality of available signals, heart rate was either estimated from pulsatile waveforms using an adaptive frequency tracking algorithm or computed from ECGs using an adaptive mathematical m

Prevalence of stereotypical responses to mistuned complex tones in the inferior colliculus.

The human auditory system has an exceptional ability to separate competing sounds, but the neural mechanisms that underlie this ability are not understood. Responses of inferior colliculus (IC) neurons to "mistuned" complex tones were measured to investigate possible neural mechanisms for spectral segregation. A mistuned tone is a harmonic complex tone in which the frequency of one component has been changed; that component may be heard as a separate sound source, suggesting that the mistuned tone engages the same mechanisms that contribute to the segregation of natural sounds. In this study,

Auditory Stimulus Processing and Task Learning Are Adequate in Dyslexia, but Benefits From Regularities Are Reduced.

PURPOSE: The reading deficit for people with dyslexia is typically associated with linguistic, memory, and perceptual-discrimination difficulties, whose relation to reading impairment is disputed. We proposed that automatic detection and usage of serial sound regularities for individuals with dyslexia is impaired (anchoring deficit hypothesis), leading to the formation of less reliable sound predictions. Agus, Carrión-Castillo, Pressnitzer, and Ramus, (2014) reported seemingly contradictory evidence by showing similar performance by participants with and without dyslexia in a demanding auditor

Improving Reliability of Monitoring Background EEG Dynamics in Asphyxiated Infants.

The goal of this study is to develop an automated algorithm to quantify background electroencephalography (EEG) dynamics in term neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. The recorded EEG signal is adaptively segmented and the segments with low amplitudes are detected. Next, depending on the spatial distribution of the low-amplitude segments, the first part of the algorithm detects (dynamic) interburst intervals (dIBIs) and performs well on the relatively artifact-free EEG periods and well-defined burst-suppression EEG periods. However, on testing the algorithm on EEG recordings of more t

Is There a Difference in Facial Emotion Recognition after Stroke with vs. without Central Facial Paresis?

The Facial Feedback Hypothesis (FFH) states that facial emotion recognition is based on the imitation of facial emotional expressions and the processing of physiological feedback. In the light of limited and contradictory evidence, this hypothesis is still being debated. Therefore, in the present study, emotion recognition was tested in patients with central facial paresis after stroke. Performance in facial vs. auditory emotion recognition was assessed in patients with vs. without facial paresis. The accuracy of objective facial emotion recognition was significantly lower in patients with vs.

AVATAR therapy for auditory verbal hallucinations in people with psychosis: a single-blind, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: A quarter of people with psychotic conditions experience persistent auditory verbal hallucinations, despite treatment. AVATAR therapy (invented by Julian Leff in 2008) is a new approach in which people who hear voices have a dialogue with a digital representation (avatar) of their presumed persecutor, voiced by the therapist so that the avatar responds by becoming less hostile and concedes power over the course of therapy. We aimed to investigate the effect of AVATAR therapy on auditory verbal hallucinations, compared with a supportive counselling control condition. METHODS: We di

Prism adaptation does not change the rightward spatial preference bias found with ambiguous stimuli in unilateral neglect.

Previous research has shown that prism adaptation (prism adaptation) can ameliorate several symptoms of spatial neglect after right-hemisphere damage. But the mechanisms behind this remain unclear. Recently we reported that prisms may increase leftward awareness for neglect in a task using chimeric visual objects, despite apparently not affecting awareness in a task using chimeric emotional faces (Sarri et al., 2006). Here we explored potential reasons for this apparent discrepancy in outcome, by testing further whether the lack of a prism effect on the chimeric face task task could be explain

Cross-modal credibility modelling for EEG-based multimodal emotion recognition.

Objective. The study of emotion recognition through electroencephalography (EEG) has garnered significant attention recently. Integrating EEG with other peripheral physiological signals may greatly enhance performance in emotion recognition. Nonetheless, existing approaches still suffer from two predominant challenges: modality heterogeneity, stemming from the diverse mechanisms across modalities, and fusion credibility, which arises when one or multiple modalities fail to provide highly credible signals.Approach.In this paper, we introduce a novel multimodal physiological signal fusion model t

Subcostal M-mode echocardiography of the right atrial wall in evaluation of cardiac arrhythmias and pacing.

Subcostal M-mode echocardiography of the right atrial wall in combination with the simultaneously recorded nondiagnostic electrocardiogram is useful in the recognition of various rhythm disturbances. Each arrhythmia has a characteristic right atrial wall motion pattern. Flat and hidden P-waves can be accurately detected throughout the cardiac cycle and supraventricular tachycardias with aberration can be distinguished from ventricular tachycardia with AV dissociation. This echocardiographic technique is of special value in the follow-up of physiological pacemakers because atrial capture and se

Disruption of adult olfactory neurogenesis induces deficits in maternal behavior in sheep.

Profound behavioral changes occur in the mother at parturition, a time when the maternal brain undergoes extensive remodeling of neural circuits, especially in olfactory structures. Adult neurogenesis, a form of brain plasticity, could constitute an adaptive response to motherhood. The present study hypothesized that chemical disruption of olfactory neurogenesis would impair the establishment of maternal behavior in sheep. In addition, because ewes are able to learn the olfactory signature of their offspring, we also examined whether disruption of olfactory neurogenesis altered recognition of

Material specific lateralization of medial temporal lobe function: An fMRI investigation.

The theory of material specific lateralization of memory function posits that left and right MTL regions are asymmetrically involved in mnemonic processing of verbal and nonverbal material respectively. Lesion and functional imaging (fMRI) studies provide robust evidence for a left MTL asymmetry in the verbal memory domain. Evidence for a right MTL/nonverbal asymmetry is not as robust. A handful of fMRI studies have investigated this issue but have generally utilised nonverbal stimuli which are amenable to semantic elaboration. This fMRI study aimed to investigate the neural correlates of reco

Cannabinoid agonist WIN55,212-2 prevents scopolamine-induced impairment of spatial memory in rats.

The endocannabinoid system is involved in diverse processes, like learning and memory, governed by cholinergic neurotransmission. Recent research demonstrates that in a rat model of dementia derived from basal forebrain cholinergic degeneration, WIN55,212-2, a potent cannabinoid receptor agonist, improves cognition through increased cortical choline levels. However, the effect of cannabinoids on cholinergic deficits is still under investigation. In this work, we studied the effect of this treatment in a pharmacological rat model of transient cholinergic hypofunction by the acute administration

Suppression of non-selected solutions as a possible brain mechanism for ambiguity resolution in the word fragment task completion task.

Brain systems dealing with multiple meanings of ambiguous stimuli are relatively well studied, while the processing of non-selected meanings is less investigated in the neurophysiological literature and provokes controversy between existing theories. It is debated whether these meanings are actively suppressed and, if yes, whether suppression characterizes any task that involves alternative solutions or only those tasks that emphasize semantic processing or the existence of alternatives. The current functional MRI event-related study used a modified version of the word fragment completion task

A Cell-Intrinsic Interferon-like Response Links Replication Stress to Cellular Aging Caused by Progerin.

Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is a premature aging disease caused by a truncated lamin A protein (progerin) that drives cellular and organismal decline. HGPS patient-derived fibroblasts accumulate genomic instability, but its underlying mechanisms and contribution to disease remain poorly understood. Here, we show that progerin-induced replication stress (RS) drives genomic instability by eliciting replication fork (RF) stalling and nuclease-mediated degradation. Rampant RS is accompanied by upregulation of the cGAS/STING cytosolic DNA sensing pathway and activation of a robust S

Chemical cues from females trigger male courtship behaviour in grasshoppers.

Gomphocerine grasshoppers use species-specific calling songs for sex recognition and mate attraction. In two closely related species, Chorthippus biguttulus and C. mollis, acoustic communication is the only experimentally characterized communication channel that elicits male courtship behaviour. However, courtship in these species involves extensive close-range interactions that are likely to be mediated by other signalling modalities, in particular chemical cues. We developed a bioassay to determine if female cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) act as chemical cues that induce courtship behaviour,

Digital Acoustic Uroflowmetry for Noninvasive Urine Flow Rate Monitoring in Men Using Smartphone Acoustic Pattern Recognition: Protocol for the Development of a System and Mobile App.

BACKGROUND: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) constitute a significant global health burden with a severe impact. Uroflowmetry, the gold standard assessment for measuring urinary flow, may be inaccessible due to equipment availability or cost. Meanwhile, the proliferation of smartphones, even in resource-limited countries, offers a promising infrastructure for developing an innovative tool. Using the built-in microphone of smartphones to capture and analyze voiding sounds to estimate urine flow parameters has emerged as a potential solution to overcome these limitations. OBJECTIVE: This stu

Late disruption of central visual field disrupts peripheral perception of form and color.

Evidence from neuroimaging and brain stimulation studies suggest that visual information about objects in the periphery is fed back to foveal retinotopic cortex in a separate representation that is essential for peripheral perception. The characteristics of this phenomenon have important theoretical implications for the role fovea-specific feedback might play in perception. In this work, we employed a recently developed behavioral paradigm to explore whether late disruption to central visual space impaired perception of color. In the first experiment, participants performed a shape discriminat

Bayesian quantification of sensory reweighting in a familial bilateral vestibular disorder (DFNA9).

DFNA9 is a rare progressive autosomal dominantly inherited vestibulo-cochlear disorder, resulting in a homogeneous group of patients with hearing impairment and bilateral vestibular function loss. These patients suffer from a deteriorated sense of spatial orientation, leading to balance problems in darkness, especially on irregular surfaces. Both behavioral and functional imaging studies suggest that the remaining sensory cues could compensate for the loss of vestibular information. A thorough model-based quantification of this reweighting in individual patients is, however, missing. Here we p
