Primary endodermal sinus tumor (yolk sac tumor) of the mediastinum is uncommon. Most patients are young and male, and the great majority of tumors are found in the anterior mediastinum. We report a case of primary posterior mediastinal endodermal sinus tumor occurring in a female patient. Surgical excision was performed and three courses of combination chemotherapy were subsequently given. The serum alpha-fetoprotein level returned to normal.

The cervical cancer has already attained high survival rate and there is a little room to improve the prognosis. The rectal absorption of pepleomycin sulfate (PEPS) in rats was increased significantly by the coadministration with each of diclofenac (DC), sodium 5-methoxysalicylate (5-MSA) and phenylalanine enamine of ethylacetoacetate (Enamine). 5-MSA increased the lymphatic uptake of PEPS after rectal administration while DC and Enamine did not. The mechanism behind the enhancing action of 5-MSA on the lymphatic uptake of PEPS may be due to the suppressing action of 5-MSA on the vascular permeability to PEPS. DC increased the vascular permeability to PEPS but Enamine did not affect it. Findings obtained

Thirty two patients with inoperable head and neck cancer seen at Jichi Medical School Hospital during the period 1978 to 1995 were analyzed. Distribution of the affected site was as follows: 15 cases of oropharynx, 12 of hypopharynx, and 3 of larynx. In order to study a better performance status, prognosis and side effects were compared between radiotherapy alone (17 patients) and combined radiochemotherapy (15 patients). The present communication describes a patient with paraganglioma found in the retroperitoneum and neck. She was treated with the combination chemotherapy employing cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and cisplatin (CAP therapy), and resulted in remarkable regression of the tumor in size. We reviewed the literature about the therapy of paraganglioma and the nature of retroperitoneal paraganglioma in relation with this case.

The application of a heat pad in the hyperthermia treatment of malignant skin tumors was examined. The temperature on the skin surface, and at a depth of 1 mm and 2 mm became 42C, 41C and 40C respectively, and was maintained for 4 hours. Two patients were treated with the heat pad alone, four were treated in combination with radiotherapy and one patient each with Pepleomycin injection and Bleomycin ointment. Irrespective of the above methods used, the heat pad was effective.
