Acute pericardial conditions, such as tamponade, are often rapidly progressive and can become life-threatening without timely diagnosis and intervention. In this review, we aim to describe bedside ultrasonographic evaluation of the pericardium and diagnostic criteria for tamponade, identify confounders in the diagnosis of pericardial tamponade, and delineate procedural details of ultrasound-guided pericardiocentesis.

Primary malignant pericardial mesothelioma is an exceptionally rare tumor, and making an antemortem diagnosis of this disease is notoriously difficult. The fungi in the order Mucorales commonly target immunocompromised hosts, especially diabetics and produce fulminating respiratory and/or central nervous system infections, which are often fatal. We report primary zygomycotic pericarditis accompanied by osteomyelitis of the sternum in an immunocompetent female: a rare site and a rare setting. The disease was clinically thought to be of tuberculous aetiology and had evaded diagnosis for a year.

A 29-year-old man visited our office after experiencing palpitations at night. The chest radiographic, echocardiographic (transthoracic and transesophageal), MRI, CT and cardiac catheterization findings in a 72-year-old patient with extensive pericardial lipomatosis are presented. Diastolic pressures in the left heart were elevated. The massive lipomatous mass was partially resected surgically with good symptomatic relief. Histologically the neoplasm consisted of mature non-malignant adipose tissue. Cushing's Syndrome was absent.

METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of all patients who received a bovine pericardium-wrapped orbital implant after enucleation by the authors between August 1, 1996, and December 1, 1999.

In two patients (24 and 26 years old) with chronic bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, peripheral blood eosinophilia of 48% and 51%, respectively, mononeuritis multiplex and abnormal erythrocyte sedimentation rate, Churg-Strauss syndrome was diagnosed. A ten-year experience with operations on the pericardium in 71 consecutive patients was reviewed. The patients ranged in age from nine months to 75 years old. Fifty-three patients were operated upon for pericardial effusion and 14 for pericardial constriction.
