Tuberculous osteomyelitis affecting periodontium: A rare case report.

Tuberculous lesions affecting periodontium are rare and seen as secondary infections localized to the soft tissues. With the advent of effective drug therapy, tuberculous lesions of the oral cavity have become rare. Involvement of the periodontium has seldomly been reported in the recent literature. We report a case of tuberculous osteomyelitis of mandible affecting periodontium leading to gingival recession and bone exposure in the mandibular premolar region in a 42-year-old female patient. The diagnosis was based on patient's medical and dental history, bacterial culture, clinical and radiog…

Automatic Assessment of Periodontium Complex in Intraoral Ultrasound Videos.

Intraoral ultrasound (IUS) is emerging as a valuable imaging modality in dentistry, offering noninvasive, radiation-free, real-time visualization of periodontal structures. Unlike traditional imaging methods, IUS enables dynamic assessments during clinical procedures, supporting diagnostic and treatment-planning capabilities. The accurate evaluation of parameters such as alveolar bone level (ABL), gingival thickness (GT), and alveolar bone thickness (ABT) is critical for diagnosing periodontal diseases. However, current assessment techniques are typically manual, time-consuming, and based on s

Food and oral health: 2. Periodontium and oral mucosa.

Dental schools tend to teach only the rudiments of this subject and this does not provide a good basis for dentists to advise patients and combat the misinformation surrounding the topic. The first article in the two-part series examined nutrition as it applies to dental caries, while part two discusses some of the general principles of nutrition in relation to oral health, periodontal disease and the oral mucosa.

Osteoporotic Changes in the Periodontium Impair Alveolar Bone Healing.

Osteoporosis is associated with decreased bone density and increased bone fragility, but how this disease affects alveolar bone healing is not clear. The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which osteoporosis affects the jaw skeleton and then to evaluate possible mechanisms whereby an osteoporotic phenotype might affect the rate of alveolar bone healing following tooth extraction. Using an ovariectomized mouse model coupled with micro-computed tomographic imaging, histologic, molecular, and cellular assays, we first demonstrated that the appendicular and jaw skeletons both d

Potential Impact of Prosthetic Biomaterials on the Periodontium: A Comprehensive Review.

The success of a prosthetic treatment is closely related to the periodontal health of the individual. The aim of this article was to review and present the importance of prosthetic restorative materials on the condition of the periodontium, the changes that occur in the composition of the subgingival microbiota and the levels of inflammatory markers in gingival crevicular fluid. Articles on the influence of different prosthetic restorative materials on subgingival microbiota and proinflammatory cytokines were searched for using the keywords "prosthetic biomaterials", "fixed prosthesis", "perio…

Clinical and radiographic evaluation of the Periodontium with biologic width invasion.

BACKGROUND: The biologic width is defined as the coronal dimension to the alveolar bone that is occupied by healthy gingival tissue. The objective of the present study was to correlate radiographic findings of biologic width invasion with the periodontium status. METHODS: It were included 14 patients with restored teeth with biological width invasion, on the proximal sites, observed clinically and radiographically. 122 proximal sites were evaluated, 61 in the test group (biological width invasion) and 61 in the control group (adequate biological width). Smokers and patients presenting periodo…

Decision Process in Treatment of Reduced Periodontium: A Case Report.

The relationship between attachment loss and occlusal trauma has been debated for many years. When a patient presents with advanced periodontal disease, a decision has to be made on whether the teeth can be saved or extracted. In this treatment example, the decision process in therapeutic planning for a patient with stage IV periodontal disease is discussed. The main dilemma is whether the patient should receive a prosthodontic reconstruction supported by osseointegrated implants or by periodontally compromised natural teeth. It is assumed that implants do better than teeth over the long term

The Periodontium as a Potential Cause of Orofacial Pain: A Comprehensive Review.

INTRODUCTION: Orofacial pain of periodontal origin has a wide range of causes, and its high prevalence and negative effect on patients' quality of life make intervention mandatory. This review provides a periodontological overview of the field of orofacial pain, focusing on the entities which involve the periodontal tissues and may be the cause of this pain or discomfort. METHODS: The study comprised a literature search of these pathologies conducted in the MEDLINE/PubMed Database. Acute infectious entities such as gingival and periodontal abscesses are emergencies that require a rapid respon

Fibulins and matrilins are novel structural components of the periodontium in the mouse.

Periodontitis refers to inflammatory disease of the periodontal structures (the gingiva, dental cementum, periodontal ligament (PDL) and alveolar bone) that ultimately leads to their destruction. Whereas collagens are well-examined main components of the periodontium, little is known about the other structural proteins that make up this tissue. The aim of this study was to identify new extracellular matrix (ECM) components, including fibulins and matrilins, in the periodontium of mice. After sacrificing 14 mice (Sv/129 strain), jaws were prepared. Each tissue sample contained a molar and its s…

Influence of female sex hormones on periodontium: A case series.

Dental plaque is the primary etiologic factor for the periodontal diseases. Although pathogenic bacteria in dental plaque are necessary for the incidence of periodontal disease, but a susceptible host is as important. The susceptibility of the host can be modified by various systemic factors with hormones level being one. The periodontium shows an exaggerated inflammatory response to plaque modified by female sex hormone during puberty, pregnancy, in women taking oral contraceptives and at the postmenopausal stage. This paper presents such few cases where periodontium is influenced by variatio…

Endocrinology of sex steroid hormones and cell dynamics in the periodontium.

Numerous scientific studies assert the existence of hormone-sensitive periodontal tissues. Tissue specificity of hormone localization, identification of hormone receptors and the metabolism of hormones are evidence that periodontal tissues are targets for sex steroid hormones. Although the etiologies of periodontal endocrinopathies are diverse, periodontal pathologies are primarily the consequence of the actions and interactions of sex steroid hormones on specific cells found in the periodontium. This review provides a broad overview of steroid hormone physiology, evidence for the periodontium…

Promise of periodontal ligament stem cells in regeneration of periodontium.

A great number of patients around the world experience tooth loss that is attributed to irretrievable damage of the periodontium caused by deep caries, severe periodontal diseases or irreversible trauma. The periodontium is a complex tissue composed mainly of two soft tissues and two hard tissues; the former includes the periodontal ligament (PDL) tissue and gingival tissue, and the latter includes alveolar bone and cementum covering the tooth root. Tissue engineering techniques are therefore required for regeneration of these tissues. In particular, PDL is a dynamic connective tissue that is …

Effects of endogenous sex hormones on the periodontium--review of literature.

Hormones are specific regulatory molecules that have potent effects on the major determinants of the development and the integrity of the skeleton and oral cavity including periodontal tissues. It is clear that periodontal manifestations occur when an imbalance of these steroid hormones take place. The authors conducted a Medline search up to 2004 and in addition, a manual search was also performed including bibliographies of relevant papers, review articles and books. This review focuses on the effects of endogenous sex hormones on the periodontium and the goal was to inform and update practi…

The localisation of ED1 antibody in the resorbing hard tissues of the periodontium.

A dental hard tissue resorptive model was used to determine the periodontal ligament (PDL) distribution of lysosomal membrane antibody ED1 to cells of the macrophage-phagocyte lineage. Immunolabel was identified in mononuclear cells around inflammatory sites in the PDL, while multinuclear cells were labelled in resorption bays present in both bone and dentine. As repair of the tissues occurred, the label became less obvious. The presence of strong ED1 label in alveolar bone marrow provided evidence supporting the haemopoietic origin of the similarly labelled PDL cells. Also, evidence confirmin

[Structure of the dog periodontium during milk and permanent occlusion].

The state of dog parodont during milk and permanent occlusion was studied by morphological methods in 8 animals. It was established that the structure of parodont of milk and permanent teeth has features characteristic for each type of occlusion. One of the important distinctions of parodont structure during milk occlusion is the presence of osteoclasts especially in the sites of root resorption. Close attachment of roots of milk teeth to follicles of permanent teeth should be taken into consideration in orthodontic correction of milk tooth position.

Efficacy of the FDA selection criteria for radiographic assessment of the periodontium.

The diagnosis of periodontitis is generally made on the basis of a clinical examination supported by radiographic evidence of bone loss. Recent guidelines promulgated by the US Food and Drug Administration recommend that periapical radiographs be ordered on the basis of clinical signs and symptoms indicating the probable presence of disease. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the FDA Guidelines for ordering radiographs for new adult dental patients as related to assessment of the periodontal condition of the patient. We examined 490 patients and determined the periapicals needed to supp
