Persistent Organic Pollutants and Heart Rate Variability: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Study in China.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence has suggested that persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are linked with cardiovascular disease. However, limited evidence has systematically investigated the association between different types of POPs, individually or as mixtures, and heart rate variability (HRV). METHODS: In a community of 159 Chinese adults, we measured the serum concentrations of 100 POPs and assessed 7 HRV indicators. Single-pollutant-based robust linear regression and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression were applied to identify significant POP-HRV pairs. Weighted …

Metabolome-wide association study of four groups of persistent organic pollutants and abnormal blood lipids.

Environmental exposure increases the risk of dyslipidemia, which affects human health. Research has shown that persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), polychlorinated biphenyls, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and phthalate metabolites, are associated with a higher risk of abnormal blood lipid levels in humans. However, the key molecules involved in dyslipidemia and the mechanisms are not fully understood. This study aims to investigate the biomarkers that mediate the relationships between blood lipids and four groups of POPs and revealed th…

Persistent Organic Pollutants and the Association with Maternal and Infant Thyroid Homeostasis: A Multipollutant Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Disruption of thyroid homeostasis has been indicated in human studies targeting effects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Influence on the maternal thyroid system by POPs is of special interest during pregnancy because such effects could impair infant thyroid homeostasis. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the association between POPs and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroid hormones (THs) in mother and child pairs from the Northern Norway Mother-and-Child Contaminant Cohort Study (MISA). METHODS: Nineteen POPs and 10 thyroid parameters were analyzed in serum from 391 pr…

Partitioning of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) between human serum and breast milk: a literature review.

The literature was reviewed to assess the relationship between the lipid adjusted concentration in human serum and breast milk (expressed as the serum/milk ratio) of a broad range of POPs in paired samples. Thirteen studies were identified, including seven studies that reported serum/milk ratios for polychlorinated dibenzo-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/Fs), ten for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), five for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and five for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). Mean serum/milk ratios ranged between 0.7 and 25 depending on the compound and congener. For PCDD/Fs, PCBs

Persistent organic pollutants, lipid remodeling and gene expression during reproductive maturation in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua).

Environmental contaminants pose a significant risk to marine species due to their persistence, bioaccumulation, and potential to impair reproduction. In fish, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are primarily acquired through diet. This study investigated POP accumulation and lipid metabolism in farmed Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) from early maturation to spawning, integrating chemical analyses with gene expression profiling of lipid- and stress-related pathways. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were the most abundant POPs detected, followed by toxaphene, reflecting feed composition. POP conce…

Prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants and body mass index trajectories from birth to age 13.

Prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) has been linked to growth and adiposity development in children. However, only few studies considered the growth dynamic and none have tracked children into adolescence. This study included 450 mother-child pairs from the PELAGIE cohort (France). Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), Organochlorine pesticides (OCs), Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were measured in cord blood. A latent class growth model identified four types of BMI z-score (zBMI) trajectories from birth to 13 years. Associations …

Prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants and sex-specific neonatal outcomes in the ENVIRONAGE birth cohort.

Early-life exposure to environmental contaminants, such as endocrine disrupting persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), is linked to adverse neonatal outcomes. However, the sex-specific effects of POP mixtures and the potential mediating roles of biological pathways, such as inflammation, remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to investigate these aspects within the ENVIRONAGE birth cohort. The study population consisted of newborns (n = 402) from the ENVIRONAGE bi…

Food intake and serum persistent organic pollutants in the Greenlandic pregnant women: The ACCEPT sub-study.

The Greenlandic Inuit have high blood concentrations of environmental persistent organic pollutants (POPs). High POP concentrations have been associated with age, smoking and consumption of marine mammals. Studies have indicated that exposure to POPs during pregnancy may adversely affect fetal and child development. To assess geographical differences in diet, lifestyle and environmental contaminant exposure among pregnant women in Greenland, blood samples and questionnaire data were collected from 207 pregnant women in five Greenlandic regions (North, Disco Bay, West, South and East). Blood sa…

Harnessing microbial gene pools to remediate persistent organic pollutants using genetically modified plants--a viable technology?

It has been 14 years since the international community came together to legislate the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), restricting the production and use of specific chemicals that were found to be environmentally stable, often bioaccumulating, with long-term toxic effects. Efforts are continuing to remove these pollutants from the environment. While incineration and chemical treatment can be successful, these methods require the removal of tonnes of soil, at high cost, and are damaging to soil structure and microbial communities. The engineering of plants for in s…

Association of selected persistent organic pollutants in the placenta with the risk of neural tube defects.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have been associated with a wide range of adverse health effects. Our case-control study was performed to explore the association between placental levels of selected POPs and risks for neural tube defects (NTDs) in a Chinese population with a high prevalence of NTDs. Cases included 80 fetuses or newborns with NTDs, whereas the controls were 50 healthy, nonmalformed newborn infants. Placental concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers were analyzed by ga…

Computational modelling of host-guest interactions between a Ni(II) coordination complex and persistent organic pollutants.

Regulatory restrictions and controlled experimental access to numerous hazardous agrochemicals pose a growing challenge to the strategic design of advanced sensing materials for persistent organic pollutants (POPs). This study presents a comprehensive theoretical analysis of a well-characterized Ni(II)-based coordination complex, prepared by a slow diffusion process, as a possible sensing platform for the identification of several POPs. Density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent DFT, reduced density gradient, and electron localization function analyses were utilized to systematically inve…

From smart sensing to adaptive remediation: artificial intelligence and Internet of Things for persistent organic pollutants.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) remain a major environmental challenge because of their persistence, long-range transport, bioaccumulation, and resistance to degradation. Conventional monitoring and remediation systems provide reliable analytical performance but are largely fragmented, laboratory dependent, and unable to deliver the continuous, predictive, and adaptive management required for complex, dynamic contamination scenarios. Recent literature reports substantial advances in biosensors, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled sensing, machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence (A…

Does contamination with legacy persistent organic pollutants still prevail over emerging compounds in Arctic marine mammals?

Transboundary pollution with harmful chemicals triggers research in remote regions such as the Arctic. Legacy and emerging hydrophobic organic contaminants, including persistent organic pollutants, biomagnify and are of particular concern in marine top predators and humans. Each chemical group can exceed effect thresholds in apex predators without considering mixture effects with other contaminants nor multiple stressor settings. We used silicone chemometers to investigate the contaminant profiles in blubber tissues collected from 84 individuals covering six Arctic marine mammal species from E…

Persistent organic pollutants in infants and toddlers: Relationship between concentrations in matched plasma and faecal samples.

Early-childhood biomonitoring of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is challenging due to the logistic and ethical limitations associated with blood sampling. We investigated using faeces as a non-invasive matrix to estimate internal exposure to POPs. The concentrations of selected POPs were measured in matched plasma and faecal samples collected from 20 infants/toddlers (aged 13±4.8months), including a repeat sample time point for 13 infants (~5months apart). We observed higher rates of POP quantification in faeces (2g dry weight) than in plasma (0.5mL). Among the five chemicals that had qu…
