Epidemiological, clinical and laboratory aspects of sandfly fever.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sandfly fever viruses are still a significant health problem in many regions of the world, such as Africa, the Mediterranean basin, the Middle East, and Central Asia. This review provides an update on the advances in knowledge about epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory aspects of infections caused by Toscana, Sicilian and Naples viruses. RECENT FINDINGS: Diagnosis of Toscana virus infection has been facilitated by new molecular methods and by immunoenzymatic tests based on the recombinant nucleoprotein. Gene analysis has allowed identification of circulating Toscana va

[Results of examination of healthy residents in the southern region of Russia and patients feverish to pappataci fever virus antibodies].

Sera from patients with acute seasonal fevers and apparently healthy individuals living in the Astrakhan Region, Krasnodar Territory, or Rostov Region were examined in two modifications of enzyme immunoassay for detection of IgM and IgG antibodies to Neapolitan and Sicilian pappataci fever viruses. IgM antibodies to Sicilian pappataci fever virus were detected in a patient from the Volodarsky District, Astrakhan Region, who had been admitted for the unverified diagnosis of Q fever. A donor residing in the Novorossiysk District, Krasnodar Territory, was found to have IgA antibodies to Neapolita

Sandfly fever Sicilian virus, Algeria.

To determine whether sandfly fever Sicilian virus (SFSV) is present in Algeria, we tested sandflies for phlebovirus RNA. A sequence closely related to that of SFSV was detected in a Phlebotomus ariasi sandfly. Of 60 human serum samples, 3 contained immunoglobulin G against SFSV. These data suggest SFSV is present in Algeria.

Phenology and host preferences Phlebotomus perniciosus (Diptera: Phlebotominae) in a focus of Toscana virus (TOSV) in South of France.

This paper reports on an entomological survey performed over the period 2009-2011 in endemic focus of peri-urban TOSV in South of France located from 24km east of Marseille. Sand flies were captured using CDC light traps set in sand fly resting places overnight, and temperature, relative humidity and wind were recorded to establish possible relations between meteorological factors and vector densities. The most common species, of 5,432 specimens collected and identified, was Phlebotomus perniciosus (74%), followed by Sergentomyia minuta (6%) and Phlebotomus ariasi (1%). Male flies were highly

Molecular and serological evidence for the presence of novel phleboviruses in sandflies from northern algeria.

During summer 2007, a total of 785 phlebotomine flies were trapped in northern Algeria, identified morphologically, organised as monospecific pools and tested for the presence of phlebovirus RNA using degenerate primers. Three pools were positive, and the corresponding PCR products were cloned and sequenced. Viral sequences corresponding to two phleboviruses distinct from each other were detected in sandflies circulating in two close locations (140 km apart) in Northern Algeria. The 3 sequences were aligned with homologous polymerase sequences retrieved from the Genbank database, in order to e

Using deep learning artificial intelligence for sex identification and taxonomy of sand fly species.

Sandflies are vectors for several tropical diseases such as leishmaniasis, bartonellosis, and sandfly fever. Moreover, sandflies exhibit species-specificity in transmitting particular pathogen species, with females being responsible for disease transmission. Thus, effective classification of sandfly species and the corresponding sex identification are important for disease surveillance and control, managing breeding/populations, research and development, and conducting epidemiological studies. This is typically performed manually by observing internal morphological features, which maybe an err

The potential effect of global warming on the geographic and seasonal distribution of Phlebotomus papatasi in southwest Asia.

The distribution of Phlebotomus papatasi in Southwest Asia is thought to be highly dependent on temperature and relative humidity. A discriminant analysis model based on weather data and reported vector surveys was developed to predict the seasonal and geographic distribution of P. papatasi in this region. To simulate global warming, temperature values for 115 weather stations were increased by 1 degree C, 3 degrees C, and 5 degrees C, and the outcome variable coded as unknown in the model. Probability of occurrence values were then predicted for each location with a weather station. Stations

Toscana virus encephalitis following a holiday in Sicily.

We report a case of Toscana virus encephalitis. This emerging pathogen is among the three most common causes of meningoencephalitis in Europe during the warm season, yet remains under-recognised. Doctors should consider Toscana virus infection in patients presenting with neurological symptoms who have a relevant exposure history during the summer months.

Detection of a Novel Phlebovirus (Drin Virus) from Sand Flies in Albania.

Phlebotomine sand flies are generalist vectors with significant implications for public health. They are able to transmit phleboviruses that cause sand fly fever, headaches, or meningitis in humans. Albania is a country in Southeast Europe with a typical Mediterranean climate which provides convenient conditions for the presence of sand flies. Hence, the circulation of phleboviruses, such as the Toscana and Balkan viruses, has been recently described in the country. We followed a virus discovery approach on sand fly samples collected in 2015 and 2016 in seven regions of Albania, with the aim t

[Meningoencephalitis caused by Toscana virus in Czech travelers returning from the Mediterranean].

Presented are case studies of 3 patients with aseptic meninogencephalitis occurring after returning from the Mediterranean tourist regions. None of the infectious agents common in aseptic neuroinfections in the Czech Republic was detected in the patients. Serological tests showed that in each case, the illness was caused by Toscana virus, a phlebovirus belonging to the family Bunyaviridae. The virus is transmitted by tiny biting insects of the genus Phlebotomus commonly present in the Mediterranean area. The course of the disease was mild to moderate and all the patients recovered without sequ

Differences in the salivary effects of wild-caught versus colonized Phlebotomus papatasi (Diptera: Psychodidae) on the development of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in BALB/c mice.

Preimmunization of mice with salivary gland homogenate (SGH) of long-term colonized (F29) female Phlebotomus papatasi Scopoli (Diptera: Psychodidae) induced protection against Leishmania major Yakimoff & Schokhor (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) co-inoculated with the same type of SGH. In contrast, preimmunization of mice with SGH of wild-caught female P. papatasi did not confer protection against L. major co-inoculated with the same type of SGH. Similarly, SGH from recently colonized (F1) female P. papatasi did not protect mice against L. major. These results suggest that when developing a

Epidemiology of Sandfly-Borne Phleboviruses in North Africa: An Overview.

Eight sandfly-borne phleboviruses were found to circulate in North Africa. Phleboviruses detected in sandflies were Toscana (TOSV), Sandfly Fever Sicilian (SFSV), Sandfly Fever Naples (SFNV), Cyprus (CYPV), Punique (PUNV), Utique, Saddaguia, and Medjerda Valley (MVV) viruses, yielding an overall infection rate of 0.02-0.6%. Phlebotomus perniciosus and Phlebotomus longicuspis were the most common vector species in the region. TOSV seroprevalence in dogs from Algeria (4.56%) and Tunisia (7.5%) was low and close, unlike SFSV (38.1%) and PUNV (43.5%), which were restricted to Tunisia. SFSV (1.3-21

Catching up with old friends: a 2-year survey of phlebotomine sand fly-borne phleboviruses presence in southern Portugal.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies are vectors of several pathogens of medical and veterinary relevance worldwide, including three human viruses of the genus Phlebovirus in Europe: sand fly fever Sicilian virus (Phlebovirus siciliaense, SFSV), Toscana virus (Phlebovirus toscanaense, TOSV), and sand fly fever Naples virus (Phlebovirus napoliense, SFNV). Most human infections are asymptomatic or cause influenza-like illness; however, TOSV can cause severe neurological disease. Within the framework of the European Climate Monitoring and Decision Support Framework for Sand Fly-borne Diseases (CLI
