A major problem in reconstructive and plastic surgery of the face is the assessment of exact distances between certain points of reference across facial contours. This study reports an independent audit of two aspects of orthognathic surgery, namely control of inter-alar width and mandibular outline asymmetry. Measurements were taken from standardized photographs of a consecutive series of 27 patients, using an on-screen digitizing program (IPTool). All patients had undergone bimaxillary osteotomies involving maxillary impaction and/or advancement, by one surgeon, using a cinch suture for nasal width control. BACKGROUND: The retinal microcirculation can be viewed non-invasively to give a unique perspective of the cerebral microcirculation in vivo. Studying pathological changes of retinal blood vessels (microaneurysms, retinal haemorrhages, and retinal arteriolar narrowing) may help to understand the causes of various cerebrovascular disorders. Scheimpflug photography gives increased depth of field, enabling a sharp optical section through the whole anterior segment of the eye to be obtained without leaving any structures out of focus. With the Topcon SL-45 the Scheimpflug optical section can be reproduced exactly. It is the method of choice for observing lens opacities. In addition, Scheimpflug photography offers an improved method of monitoring natural courses and/or the effects of treatment in, e.g., keratoconus, lenticonus, aphakia and pseudophakia.

Scheimpflug photos of 262 cataract patients, classified according to various forms of opacifications characteristic for senile cataracts were evaluated by biometric methods. The measured values on cornea thickness, depth of anterior chamber, lens thickness, and radii of curvatures of cornea and anterior lens surface show that a correlation between some of the parameters and certain forms of opacities must be assumed.

Fundus photographs taken in 66 patients with vertical strabismus were analyzed in a blind study with respect to ocular torsion. The objective presence or absence of ocular torsion was then correlated with the patient's clinical diagnosis. The presence or absence of objective ocular torsion as seen in fundus photographs had a sensitivity of 0.86 and a specificity of 0.96 for diagnosing the presence of oblique dysfunction, and a sensitivity of 0.96 and specificity of 0.83 for diagnosing the presence of normal oblique function.
