From plankton to fish: 21st-century redistribution of marine biodiversity and the changing role of rare species.

Predictions of climate-driven marine biodiversity change typically overlook noncommercial and rare taxa, leading to an incomplete and potentially biased understanding of change. We address this gap by quantifying α-, β-, and γ-diversity using Hill numbers consistently across co-occurring phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos, and fish taxonomic groups. Using Bayesian additive regression trees and extensive survey data, we project climate-driven biodiversity change in the northeast Atlantic until 2100. We show that climate change could redistribute biodiversity both within taxonomic groups, alter…

Influence of Environmental Factors on Seasonal Variation in Plankton Dynamics in Nearshore Waters of Eastern Guangdong, China.

Phytoplankton and zooplankton are critical basal resources in regulating aquatic material and energy fluxes. We investigated how environmental variables shape seasonal plankton abundance and diversity across nearshore zones in Eastern Guangdong, China. We identified 62 phytoplankton taxa (dominated by Bacillariophyceae at 88.52%) and 34 zooplankton species (dominated by calanoid copepods at 36.36%). Redundancy analysis (RDA) demonstrated that seasonal shifts in temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and dissolved nutrients (N, P, Si) significantly drive spatial community variability (Y ≥…

"Assessment of potential eutrophication in coastal waters of Gran Canaria: Impact on plankton community under CO2 depletion".

Population growth in coastal tourist areas is leading to enhanced waste production, raising concerns about potential nutrient release increases and the resulting impact on marine ecosystems through eutrophication. Knowledge of the specific impacts of eutrophication on plankton communities in many of these regions is limited, highlighting the need for further research and appropriate environmental management strategies. To help address these gaps, we conducted a 30-day mesocosm study in the coastal waters of Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, a major European tourist destination, and the third most …

Wild microorganism and plankton decay in ballast water treatments by solar disinfection (SODIS) and advanced oxidation processes.

Ballast water (BW) is a dead weight used by ships to provide stability in their journeys. It poses health, economic and ecological problems. Since 2017, the International Maritime Organization-IMO mandated management of BW. This research compares plankton mortality and microorganism inactivation in different BW treatments to identify possible decay models. Treatments include solar radiation (Srad), UV, H2O2 and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). In the wild populations, the disinfection capacity was measured in natural seawater pumped from the Santa Marta port zone in Colombia. AOPs showed d…

Free-living and plankton-associated vibrios: assessment in ballast water, harbor areas, and coastal ecosystems in Brazil.

Ballast water (BW) is a major transport vector of exotic aquatic species and pathogenic microorganisms. The wide-ranging spread of toxigenic Vibrio cholerae O1 from harbor areas has been frequently ascribed to discharge of contaminated BW into eutrophic coastal environments, such as during the onset of the seventh cholera pandemic in South America in the early 1990s. To determine the microbiological hazards of BWs transported to Brazilian ports, we evaluated water and plankton samples taken from (i) BW tanks of recently arrived ships, (ii) port areas along the Brazilian coastline from ∼1 to 32…

Satellite Remote Sensing of Space-Time Plankton Variability in the Bay of Bengal: Connections to Cholera Outbreaks.

Cholera bacteria exhibit strong association with coastal plankton. Characterization of space-time variability of chlorophyll, a surrogate for plankton abundance, in Northern Bay of Bengal is an essential first step to develop any methodology for predicting cholera outbreaks in the Bengal Delta region using remote sensing. This study quantifies the space-time distribution of chlorophyll, using data from SeaWiFS, in the Bay of Bengal region using ten years of satellite data. Variability of chlorophyll at daily scale, irrespective of spatial averaging, resembles white noise. At a monthly scale, c…

Colistin resistance dynamics in Pseudomonas aeruginosa under biofilm and planktonic growth.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major pathogen in chronic biofilm-associated lung infections, particularly in patients with cystic fibrosis. Colistin is commonly used to treat these infections, although there is little understanding of how resistance evolves when cells are grown within biofilms. The current study compared the phenotypic dynamics and genetic adaptations of colistin resistance between planktonic and biofilm-grown P. aeruginosa. Using an in vitro experimental evolution approach, we passaged planktonic and biofilm cultures over 10 days under static or progressively increasing colistin…

Mechanisms of action of berberine hydrochloride in planktonic cells and biofilms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The increasing prevalence of extensively drug-and pan-drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major concern for global public health. Therefore, it is crucial to develop novel antimicrobials that specifically target P. aeruginosa and its biofilms. In the present study, we determined that berberine hydrochloride inhibited the growth of planktonic bacteria as well as prevented the formation of biofilms. Moreover, we observed downregulation in the expression of pslA and pelA biofilm-related genes. Compared with existing antibiotics, berberine hydrochloride exhibits multiple modes of action aga…

Antibiotic Tolerance in Biofilm and Stationary-Phase Planktonic Cells of Staphylococcus aureus.

The ability of Staphylococcus aureus to form biofilms and persisters is a major cause of recalcitrant infections that are difficult to treat. We have examined time-dependent variation in persister population present in stationary-phase planktonic cells and biofilms of S. aureus when treated with bactericidal antibiotics having different cellular targets. Fourteen isolates identified as S. aureus were found to be resistant to three to nine classes of antibiotics tested according to the CLSI guidelines. Among the sensitive isolates, S48 was found to be the strongest biofilm producer, whereas J6 …

Comparative proteomics analysis between biofilm and planktonic cells of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis is highly persistent and displays phenotypic resistance to high concentrations of antimicrobials. Recent reports exhibited that Mycobacterium tuberculosis biofilm was implicated to its pathogenicity and drug resistance. In this study, there were 47 kinds of differential proteins in the biofilm of M. tuberculosis H37Rv cells compared with the planktonic bacteria, and 37 proteins were nonredundant and identified by proteomics approach, such as 2DE and LC-MS/MS. Moreover, six kinds of proteins were identified as HspX, which were conservative and highly expressed in biofilm. Note that…

Switch from planktonic to sessile life: a major event in pneumococcal pathogenesis.

Two main patterns of gene expression of Streptococcus pneumoniae were observed during infection in the host by quantitative real time RT-PCR … e, sessile cells grown in a biofilm were more effective in inducing meningitis and pneumonia, while planktonic cells from liquid culture were more effective in inducing sepsis. Our data enable us, using in vivo gene expression and in vivo modulation of virulence, to postulate the distinction - from the pneumococcal point of view - between two main types of …

Linking the distribution of (210)Po and (210)Pb with plankton community along Line P, Northeast Subarctic Pacific.

Depth profiles of (210)Po and (210)Pb activity and phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance were collected during two cruises along the Canadian time-series Line P in the Northeast Subarctic Pacific (ranging from 48o39 N to 50o00 N and 126o40 W to 145o00 W) in August 2010 and February 2011 to evaluate connections between the planktonic community and distributions of these radionuclides in the upper 500 m of the water column. Statistical analysis indicates that (210)Po is more effectively removed from the surface ocean when large (>0.1 mg ind(-1) dry wt) zooplankton dominate, and is less effecti…

Phosphorus acquisition among planktonic microbial communities across a salinity gradient.

The Baltic Sea, with its pronounced gradient in temperature, salinity, and nutrient availability, provides a natural system to investigate microbial responses to eutrophication and climate change effects. While nutrient limitation in this system has been extensively studied, direct comparisons of phosphorus acquisition strategies across co-occurring prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities remain limited. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of how microbial plankton communities respond at the molecular level to shifts in phosphorus availability, by resolving both prokaryotic and eukaryo…

Secretion of serine proteases by planktonic- and biofilm-growing cells of Candida parapsilosis.

Candida parapsilosis is a common cause of candidiasis worldwide, with biofilm formation and secretion of aspartic proteases (Saps) as key virulence factors. Conversely, serine protease secretion by this fungus is poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the secretion of serine-type proteases by planktonic- and biofilm-forming cells of C. parapsilosis cultured in brain heart infusion (BHI) medium. Cell-free supernatant from the reference strain (ATCC 22019) was screened against various serine protease substrates, revealing pronounced activity toward N-benzoyl-Phe-Val-Arg-pNa (0.74 nmol…

Comparative metagenomics indicates metabolic niche differentiation of benthic and planktonic Woeseiaceae.

BACKGROUND: Benthic microbiomes exhibit remarkable temporal stability, contrasting with the dynamic, substrate-driven successions of bacterioplankton. Nonetheless, understanding their role in carbon cycling and interactions between these two microbial communities is limited due to the complexity of benthic microbiomes. RESULTS: Here, we used a long-reads (LRs) metagenomic approach to examine benthic microbiomes and compared them to the microbiomes in the overlaying water column and on particles, sampled at the same site and time off the island Heligoland in the North Sea. Although the diversi…
