Hummingbirds are the most speciose group of vertebrate nectarivores and exhibit striking bill variation in association with their floral food sources. To explicitly link comparative feeding biomechanics to hummingbird ecology, deciphering how they move nectar from the tongue to the throat is as important as understanding how this liquid is collected. We employed synced, orthogonally positioned, high-speed cameras to describe the bill movements, and backlight filming to track tongue and nectar displacements intraorally. We reveal that the tongue base plays a central role in fluid handling, and

The feeding mechanisms of animals constrain the spectrum of resources that they can exploit profitably. For floral nectar eaters, both corolla depth and nectar properties have marked influence on foraging choices. We report the multiple strategies used by honey bees to efficiently extract nectar at the range of sugar concentrations and corolla depths they face in nature. Honey bees can collect nectar by dipping their hairy tongues or capillary loading when lapping it, or they can attach the tongue to the wall of long corollas and directly suck the nectar along the tongue sides. The honey bee f

The social division of labor within the honeybee colony is closely related to the age of the bees, and the age structure is essential to the development and survival of the colony. Differences in tolerance to pesticides and other external stresses among worker bees of different ages may be related to their social division of labor and corresponding physiological states. Pyraclostrobin was widely used to control the fungal diseases of nectar and pollen plants, though it was not friend to honey bees and other pollinators. This work aimed to determine the effects of field recommended concentratio

The evolution of floral traits is often considered to reflect selection for increased pollination efficiency. Known as the pollination-precision hypothesis, increased pollination efficiency is achieved by enhancing pollen deposition on precise areas of the pollinator. Most research to date addressing this hypothesis has examined plant species that are a priori predicted to place pollen precisely, but we still lack comparisons with species predicted to have low pollination efficiency. We studied 39 plant species with diverse floral morphologies and measured the precision of pollen placement on

The Dilleniaceae is known to produce nectarless flowers pollinated by bees, but the fact that bats ingest Dillenia biflora pollen led us to question pollination assumptions for these trees. We aimed to identify the pollinators of D. biflora, check for nectar presence, and investigate potential for cleistogamy and global prevalence of this pollination system. We examined aspects of the pollination of D. biflora on two Fijian islands using video recordings, direct observations, hand pollination, measurements (flowers, bite marks, nectar), and monitoring. The flowers, receptive for one night, con

BACKGROUND: Orchids have evolved various strategies that aim to ensure their reproduction success. These may include the production of rewards for pollinators, or on the contrary, deception. Specific sets of features such as flower morphology, color, nectar, and odor presence (or lack thereof) are considered to determine suitability for pollination by different groups of animals. Stingless bees are thought to be the primary pollinators of the orchids of the Neotropical subtribe Maxillariinae. However, almost black flowered Brasiliorchis schunkeana at first glance presents floral adaptations th

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by flowers and aquatic microorganisms influence mosquito behavior, but the role of water- and nectar-dwelling yeasts remains underexplored. In Aedes albopictus, we characterized yeast communities from visited and non-visited flowers, and from colonized and non-colonized breeding-site waters in urban community gardens. Mint flowers were preferentially visited, and the yeasts Metschnikowia reukaufii and Aureobasidium pullulans, present at higher densities in this plant, strongly attracted adult males and females, respectively. GC-MS analysis showed that

BACKGROUND: Honey is a natural product made from the nectar of flowers by honey bees and has over 200 compounds in it, including sugars, water, organic acids, minerals and polyphenols - the exact structure and composition of honey often determined by which plant source(s) the honey bee took the nectar from. Honey has been used in diets and medicines for thousands of years; however, this review, for the first time, aims to look at its place in modern medicine concerning oral health.
HIGHLIGHT: The present review for the first time attempted to address the protective effect of honey in the oral

Iconic examples of insect pollination have emphasized narrowly specialized pollinator mutualisms such as figs and fig wasps and yuccas and yucca moths. However, recent attention by pollination ecologists has focused on the broad spectra of pollinated plants by generalist pollinators such as bees. Bees have great impact for formulating hypotheses regarding specialization versus generalization in pollination mutualisms. We report the pollination biology of six northern European species of an extinct tribe of pollen-basket-bearing apine bees, Electrapini, of early-middle Eocene age, examined from

The evolutionary success of angiosperms, which make up more than 95 percent of the world's terrestrial flora, is largely based on their interactions with animal pollinators. Indeed, it is estimated that, on average, 87.5 percent of flowering plants are pollinated by animals. The majority are pollinated by insects, but birds, bats, rodents and even lizards can play a significant role in the pollination of some species. Pollinators visit flowers in search of nutritional resources such as nectar, which contains high concentrations of sugars to meet their energy needs, and the pollen itself, which

Nectar and pollen contain diverse phytochemicals that can reduce disease in pollinators. However, prior studies showed variable effects of nectar chemicals on infection, which could reflect variable phytochemical resistance among parasite strains. Inter-strain variation in resistance could influence evolutionary interactions between plants, pollinators, and pollinator disease, but testing direct effects of phytochemicals on parasites requires elimination of variation between bees. Using cell cultures of the bumble bee parasite Crithidia bombi, we determined (1) growth-inhibiting effects of nin

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Floral traits are key mediators of plant-pollinator interactions, and can be altered through changes in resources to plants. Although several studies have tested how nitrogen affects visual traits, only a few have examined nitrogen effects on floral scent, and to our knowledge, none have evaluated the effect of nitrogen addition on nitrogenous volatile compounds. We test how nitrogen availability influences floral morphology, nectar traits, display size, and floral scent (total emissions and individual compounds) during the day and night, with a special focus on a nitrogen

Nectarivory has independently evolved many times among birds, yet little is known about the diversity of feeding mechanisms that enable specialized taxa to efficiently collect this energy-rich resource. Multiple avian groups have converged on evolving elongated bills and tube-like tongues adapted for nectar extraction. Old World sunbirds (family Nectariniidae) stand out as having the greatest degree of convergence in bill and tongue morphology with the well-studied and highly specialized New World hummingbirds (family Trochilidae), which fill their tongues via fluid trapping and expansive fill

PREMISE: Our knowledge of bird-flower interactions in Asia is limited. Here, we investigated the pollination ecology of three Phlogacanthus species that differ substantially in floral tube length. The floral tubes of bird-pollinated flowers may either correspond to the bill length of the primary bird pollinator, or relatively short-tubed flowers may be pollinated by both short- and relatively long-billed birds. The pollination systems of the three Phlogacanthus species may differ in traits other than floral tube length, reflecting their association with different bird groups.
METHODS: We obse

Dedicated nectarivory is a derived feeding habit that requires specialized cranial and soft-tissue morphologies to extract nectar from flowers. Nectarivory has evolved many times in terrestrial vertebrates, and in four bat families (Pteropodidae, Phyllostomidae, Vespertilionidae, and Mystacinidae). Within phyllostomids, specializations to nectarivory have been well documented in two subfamilies, Glossophaginae and Lonchophyllinae. However, nectarivory has also evolved independently in the genus Phyllostomus (subfamily Phyllostominae). Since Phyllostomus species have an omnivorous diet with a h

Honey is a highly valued product due to its nutritional value, pro-health and healing properties. Pollutants from the environment penetrate into nectar, honeydew, pollen and next into bee products and can cause human exposure after ingestion. Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal to living organisms. This is why it was important to determine the level of Hg in consumed honey. The aim of this manuscript is to analyse mercury concentration in honeys collected on the territory of Poland. A total of 108 samples of honey purchased in regional apiaries and hypermarkets were tested. The concentration of Hg wa

Sequential pollen presentation is a reproductive strategy adopted by plants to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of pollen export and receipt, as well as to promote outcrossing. Actinidia arguta exhibits a typical characteristic of sequential pollen presentation. In this study, indoor and field observation methods were employed to conduct a tracking investigation on the anther dehiscence mode, pollen presentation strategy of male, and the floral characteristics and pollination traits of both female and male. The results showed that the dark-colored structures surrounding the ovary in the fem

BACKGROUND: Environmental enrichment can promote natural behaviours and improve welfare in captive birds, but its effectiveness may depend on species-specific ecological and behavioural adaptations, particularly feeding ecology.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of naturalistic nectar bucket feeding enrichment devices in two parrot species with contrasting feeding strategies: rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus), which are primarily nectivorous, and regent parrots (Polytelis anthopeplus), which are primarily granivorous.
METHODS: Forty-five rainbow lorikeets a

Adult moths from framily Spingidae (i.e. hawkmoths or sphinx moths) commonly feed on flower nectar through an extended proboscis, often several centimeters in length and longer than the body of the moth. Feeding on a viscous liquid (nectar) through a long and narrow tube is a challenging fluid dynamic problem and the subject of long-running scientific investigation. Here we characterized the relationship between proboscis submergence depth and nectar drinking rate in Manduca sexta hawkmoths. Video recordings of moth feeding bouts were collected and neural networks were used to extract data by
