Pesticide impacts on insect pollinators: Current knowledge and future research challenges.

With the need to intensify agriculture to meet growing food demand, there has been significant rise in pesticide use to protect crops, but at different rates in different world regions. In 2016, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) global assessment on pollinators, pollination and food production identified pesticides as one of the major drivers of pollinator decline. This assessment highlighted that studies on the effects of pesticides on pollinating insects have been limited to only a few species, primarily from developed countries. Giv

Convergent evolution of a blood-red nectar pigment in vertebrate-pollinated flowers.

Nearly 90% of flowering plants depend on animals for reproduction. One of the main rewards plants offer to pollinators for visitation is nectar. Nesocodon mauritianus (Campanulaceae) produces a blood-red nectar that has been proposed to serve as a visual attractant for pollinator visitation. Here, we show that the nectar's red color is derived from a previously undescribed alkaloid termed nesocodin. The first nectar produced is acidic and pale yellow in color, but slowly becomes alkaline before taking on its characteristic red color. Three enzymes secreted into the nectar are either necessary

Contrasting responses of pollinators to urbanization and local management in urban farms of Havana.

Urban expansion reshapes ecological interactions in agroecosystems, yet its effects on plant-pollinator interactions remain poorly documented in tropical cities. We assessed how landscape urbanization and floral availability affect pollinator interactions across 16 urban farms in Havana, Cuba, along a gradient of impervious cover (38-97%). Farm area (0.01-11.2 ha) and plant richness (21-200 species) decreased significantly with urbanization, including a ∼90% decline in plant richness. In contrast, relative floral abundance showed a slight increase, suggesting management intensity may mitigate

Protecting pollinators: moving towards an ecologically integrated risk assessment framework.

The current environmental risk assessment framework for pesticides remains anchored to inadequate metrics and approaches. Although regulatory bodies incorporated chronic toxicity studies and developed advanced guidance, critical gaps in implementation undermine their effectiveness. Among these gaps are 1) continued primacy of the acute median lethal dose as a trigger for higher-tier assessments, 2) lack of standardized sublethal endpoints, 3) inadequate consideration of chemical mixtures, and 4) near-exclusive reliance on Apis mellifera as a surrogate for pollinator communities. Further, inter

Deceptive Ceropegia sandersonii uses an arabinogalactan for trapping its fly pollinators.

Many plant species have evolved surfaces that reduce insect attachment. Among such plants are deceptive trap flowers of Ceropegia. Their gliding zones consist of convex epidermal cells, each with a bristle-like central protuberance and a single small liquid droplet on its tip. So far, the molecular and physical mechanisms controlling the function of these droplets are unknown. We analyzed the droplets of Ceropegia sandersonii flowers by microscopic approaches, studied how they behave when getting in contact with the feet of fly pollinators, and analyzed their chemical composition. The droplets

Ethological evidence for sexually exploitative pollinator attraction by Arisaema serratum (Araceae).

Deceptive pollination exploits pollinator perceptual biases while offering no reward. Arisaema (Araceae) employs an extreme form of this strategy, in which fungus gnats are lured into a slippery floral tube that often proves fatal. However, the key factors governing attraction and capture remain poorly understood, partly due to the typically low frequency of floral visitation. Preliminary observations revealed that Arisaema serratum exhibits a relatively high visitation rate of fungus gnats. We therefore conducted direct behavioral observations of pollinators associated with A. serratum in a c

Running to the mountains: changes in plant-pollinator networks structure over space.

Plant-pollinator networks play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, especially in mountainous regions. Plant-pollinators networks experience various influences from biotic and abiotic factors across elevation gradients and flowering seasons, impacting species distribution, interactions, and community structures. In our study, we examined plant-pollinator network structures at 14 sites across elevations from 1000 to 1800 m above sea level in a Mediterranean mountainous area. The study aimed to determine if plant-pollinator network structures remain consistent acr

Mating and fitness consequences of variation in male allocation in a wind-pollinated plant.

In hermaphrodites, the allocation of resources to each sex function can influence fitness through mating success. A prediction that arises from sex allocation theory is that in wind-pollinated plants, male fitness should increase linearly with investment of resources into male function but there have been few empirical tests of this prediction. In a field experiment, we experimentally manipulated allocation to male function in Ambrosia artemisiifolia (common ragweed) and measured mating success in contrasting phenotypes using genetic markers. We investigated the effects of morphological traits

A Genome-Wide Scenario of Terpene Pathways in Self-pollinated Artemisia annua.

Scenarios of genes to metabolites in Artemisia annua remain uninvestigated. Here, we report the use of an integrated approach combining metabolomics, transcriptomics, and gene function analyses to characterize gene-to-terpene and terpene pathway scenarios in a self-pollinating variety of this species. Eighty-eight metabolites including 22 sesquiterpenes (e.g., artemisinin), 26 monoterpenes, two triterpenes, one diterpene and 38 other non-polar metabolites were identified from 14 tissues. These metabolites were differentially produced by leaves and flowers at lower to higher positions. Sequence

Can alternative sugar sources buffer pollinators from nectar shortages?

Honeydew is abundant in many ecosystems and may provide an alternative food source (a buffer) for pollinators during periods of food shortage, but the impact of honeydew on pollination systems has received little attention to date. In New Zealand, kānuka trees (Myrtaceae: Kunzea ericoides (A. Rich) Joy Thompson) are often heavily infested by the endemic honeydew-producing scale insect Coelostomidia wairoensis (Maskell) (Hemiptera: Coelostomidiidae) and the period of high honeydew production can overlap with kānuka flowering. In this study, we quantified the sugar resources (honeydew and nectar

Reproductive biology of Trichocentrum pumilum: an orchid pollinated by oil-collecting bees.

The reproductive biology, reward production and pollination mechanism of Trichocentrum pumilum were studied in a gallery forest in the interior of the State of São Paulo, southeast Brazil. The floral visitors and pollination mechanism were recorded, and experimental pollinations were carried out in order to determine the breeding system of this species. Trichocentrum pumilum blooms in spring. Each paniculate inflorescence bears an average of 85 flowers that present a central yellow callus and finger-like trichomes on the lateral lobes of the lip. A lipoidal substance is produced and stored amo

Artificial Light at Night Alters Both of Nocturnal and Diurnal Pollination Networks in Alpine Meadows.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is an increasingly pervasive driver of global change that disrupts natural diel rhythms and alters species interactions. However, its effects on plant-pollinator networks across coupled day-night systems remain poorly understood, particularly in environmentally sensitive alpine ecosystems. Here, we conducted a field manipulation experiment in an alpine meadow on the Tibetan Plateau, comparing illuminated and unlit conditions, and constructed temporally explicit pollination networks by integrating diurnal and nocturnal interactions. Despite no detectable changes

Floral adaptation and modular trait evolution associated with a shift from bee to hummingbird pollination.

Pollination shifts result in floral divergence, yet how such shifts influence variation and correlation among floral traits is unclear. We examine whether a transition from bee to hummingbird pollination in sister species of Neotropical spiral gingers - Costus kuntzei, with ancestral bee pollination, and Costus wilsonii, with derived hummingbird pollination - drives phenotypic variation, functional integration and morphological modularity. Using field measurements and observations, we assess pollinator assemblages and pollination syndrome divergence by quantifying a suite of floral traits rela

To buzz or to sip: Asymmetric pollination effectiveness hints at the evolutionary transition of floral rewards.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Evolutionary transitions between floral reward types, such as the repeated loss of nectar, are common across angiosperms, yet the ecological mechanisms driving these shifts remain poorly understood. In Pedicularis, the evolutionary loss of nectar is hypothesized to be associated with shifts to buzz pollination. However, empirical comparisons of pollination effectiveness between nectar- and pollen-foraging behaviours within a single transitional system are largely lacking. METHODS: We investigated Pedicularis alaschanica and its principal pollinator, Bombus friseanus, in t

Honeybee pollination enhances pollen germination, pollen tube growth, phytohormone responses and gene expression in pear pistils.

BACKGROUND: Honeybee pollination significantly enhances the yield of pear (Pyrus spp.), yet the early physiological mechanisms of pollination and fertilization remain underexplored. In this study, pollen germination, pollen tube growth, and ovule development were analyzed, along with the phytohormones in pistil and the gene expression associated with phytohormone biosynthetic and signal transduction pathways to the differential mechanisms after honeybee and artificial pollination. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that, compared to artificial pollination, honeybee pollination induced more eff

Past aridity and dust drove biodiversity crises and altered pollination in the ancient gymnosperm Ephedra (Gnetales).

The long-term effects of present-day climate change on pollination are unquantified. However, distinguishing climatic drivers of ancient changes in pollination could provide valuable insights into biotic responses to near-future climate states. Herein, we show that pollination in a group of gymnosperm shrubs (Ephedra L., Gnetales) was irrevocably altered by the Cenozoic expansion of drylands on two different continents. In Asia, increased continentality during the mid-Eocene drove aridification and strong, dust-carrying storms that promoted a shift to prevailing wind pollination in the core cl

Pollination Syndrome, Florivory, and Breeding System of Satyrium nepalense var. ciliatum (Orchidaceae) in Central Yunnan, China.

Research on Satyrium nepalense var. ciliatum (Lindl.) Hook. f. has primarily focused on populations in Northwestern Yunnan, with limited studies on pollination syndromes and insect behavior. In addition, it is geographically limited in its breeding system studies. Here, pollination syndromes, florivory, and breeding systems of S. nepalense var. ciliatum from Liangwang Mountain (Central Yunnan, China) were investigated through field work, microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and parafin section. It was revealed that the pollination syndrome was possessing out-crossing, such as bright

A novel bat pollination system involving obligate flower corolla removal has implications for global Dillenia conservation.

The Dilleniaceae is known to produce nectarless flowers pollinated by bees, but the fact that bats ingest Dillenia biflora pollen led us to question pollination assumptions for these trees. We aimed to identify the pollinators of D. biflora, check for nectar presence, and investigate potential for cleistogamy and global prevalence of this pollination system. We examined aspects of the pollination of D. biflora on two Fijian islands using video recordings, direct observations, hand pollination, measurements (flowers, bite marks, nectar), and monitoring. The flowers, receptive for one night, con

Identities, concentrations, and sources of pesticide exposure in pollen collected by managed bees during blueberry pollination.

Bees are critical for crop pollination, but there is limited information on levels and sources of pesticide exposure in commercial agriculture. We collected pollen from foraging honey bees and bumble bees returning to colonies placed in blooming blueberry fields with different management approaches (conventional, organic, unmanaged) and located across different landscape settings to determine how these factors affect pesticide exposure. We also identified the pollen and analyzed whether pesticide exposure was correlated with corbicular load composition. Across 188 samples collected in 2 years,
